Hey, y'all. For those unaware, a prototype of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night recently appeared out of thin air... for the game.com *cough*. Here's some relevant links... https://www.timeextension.com/news/2022/11/unseen-prototype-for-castlevania-symphony-of-the-night-on-game-com-is-unearthed https://hiddenpalace.org/Castlevania:_Symphony_of_the_Night_(Game.com_Prototype) And a video, running on real hardware... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9p2ceWSWYI And some screenshots... Cool stuff, amirite? Not fun to play, mind you, but definitely cool.

I thought I would include a Commodore 64 video from the same guy who reviewed The Mystery of the Missing Princess, the Army Men games, Kileak: The DNA Imperative, Captain Claw, and various NASCAR games. Warning: Contains cluelessness and nasty language.

Let's start the official Castlevania for Intellivision thread. Here is a first look on the game's graphics. Please remember this is still WIP and our graphic artist is still working and polishing them. Also, the screens you see here are for illustration purpose and don't necessarily represent the stage layout as they will appear in the final game.

So guys. Halloween is about a week away. And Castlevania comes to my mind as one of the most played games for me during that time of the year. Which one in the series is your favorite? For me it comes to a very tough choice between Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse and Super Castlevania 4. I have to go with the third version. It is my second favorite NES game of all time behind The Legend of Zelda. Graphically it was very impressive and for the later period of the 8 bit era, the music is simply stunning and has one of the best soundtracks to come for the system; well the whole series is known for some of the most memorable soundtracks. You can have Grant, Sypha, and Alucard help you out on your quest to hunt down Dracula. A first in the series is choosing your path to get to Dracula's Castle instead of a default selected path. And lastly the controls are executed perfectly and put a big spike in improvement from the first game and gives you a great challenge. It was a tossup for 3 and 4 as they are both A+ games along with Symphony of the Night. I am biased as the NES is my favorite system of all time. It is Dracula's Curse for me.

I know all the news lately is about the NES-Mini, and I guess this is sorta related... The game selection reminded me that I've been meaning to blast through Simon's Quest to completion for the first time. Played it a fair amount as a kid, tried it last year after I beat Castlevania, but there was some glitch where I wouldn't level up and it frustrated me and I swore it off for a while. So, I'm going to attack it with a guide if need be but I'm gonna get through it. I'm one of those "it's flawed but it's greatly ambitious" apologists for the game's overall concept, but since I've spent enough years dabbling with the official mis-translation, I was going to go with the popular "Simon's Quest: Redaction" re-vamp by TheAlmightyGuru. (Found on popular *ahem* *romhacking* sites and TAG's website.) When I was looking that up, I came across the existence of another patch, which says it adds a new English Translation and a map system and save system. Good lord! It's by "Bisqwit", and you can find it with a quick search. The Bisqwit one, based on the maps and stuff, seems like the obvious winner to pick... to someone who's never done a full play through. But is that the case? Any technical problems or glitches or translation preferences that might make the Redaction patch the preferable one? Just curious. I really can't find many reviews on the Bisqwit hack either way. Help a guy decide? It's getting late in the day, and it would be a horrible night to have a curse.

During the early fall season (and October in particular), I like to cover a lot of Castlevania content for my YouTube channel. This year I decided to focus on Let's Plays in particular, and as a result I stormed through 11 Castlevania titles from start to finish. Which titles were they in particular? Well: Castlevania (NES), Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (NES), Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (NES), Super Castlevania IV (SNES), Castlevania Chronicles/Akumajo X68000, Castlevania Adventure (Game Boy), Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge (Game Boy), Dracula X: Rondo of Blood (PC Engine DUO), Castlevania Bloodlines (Genesis), Castlevania: Dracula X (SNES), and the Castlevania Adventure ReBirth (Nintendo Wii). If you are interested in checking any of them out, I have attached a playlist, each video appearing in the order in which I covered it. (Playlist link - ) The first video in the series: ( )

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME NEW CASTLEVANIA!?! So I did a google news search of "Castlevania", and supposedly there are two new titles coming out. The first is a sequel to Lords of Shadow, and is rumored to be available on the Vita and upcoming Wii U. The second is a platformer for the 3DS, which was described as a platformer with two playable charecters and a co-op mode. I'm not sure if this refers to simultanious New SMB type co-op, or weird Portrait of Ruin co-op. I am very excited for some new Castlevania handheld titles, as these are long overdue. Metroidvania seems to fit in with Nintendo portable like a fish to water. I'm not too sure how I feel about the LoS 2 game for Vita; my gut tells me that it will end up being a lot like the 360 release, visually stunning but not much of a game. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing a platformer on the Vita either. Anyone who has played Rayman Origins can attest to the the Vita's platforming chops. Comment and speculate away!

I'm looking to buy a complete copy of castlevania bloodlines on the genesis. I really prefer the hard clamshell version of the cardboard version but if you have either, let me know. Also have a price in mind if you could, thanks!

Anyone that has ever started a business knows that it is quite a financial undertaking and sometimes can be mind blowingly tough, though extremely rewarding at the same time. We have hit a road block with Retro Gaming Magazine and bringing it to life. Asking for help is humbling and hard to do, especially with a project like this. There is quite a bit of interest in Retro Gaming Magazine and we are dedicated to making it happen. We humbly ask anyone that is even slightly interested in seeing the mag happen to please check out the project page and if possible, chip in something to help. We have a solid team running the magazine including: Martin Alessi who was Art Director for Electronic Gaming Monthly in the early 90's and helped shape the magazine early in it's life. Martin has taken up art duties for Retro Gaming Magazine. Compare his cover (and when we can release them, his layouts for issue #1) to the preview pages I created and it is like a night and day improvement. Several staff members have worked with Gamefan Magazine in reviving the magazine with issue #6 (released around the summer of last year). These include: Nick Abrams, well known to The Retro League community as one of the co-hosts of the show (we stole him away to work on the mag that he is co-owner of). Nick was one of the new writers to provide retro content that debuted that section in Gamefan Magazine. Michael Crisman, our resident retro scribe (dude can throw words like no one's business), while he worked on Gamefan #6, he still resides at Video Game Cowboys under the moniker, Modern Zorker. Carl Williams (the guy writing this), known to many as TriVerse and generally a loudmouth and co-owner. I am currently the guy that will get yelled at a lot for the mag not being it's best. If anyone can help promote the project page, that would be great. The more people that see it, the more likely it will be funded and we can realize the dream in it's full range.
