  1. Here are the pictures I took at Buffalo Game Expo 2019. Because I was by myself demoing three products at my table (the third one is a tabletop game I created with a 3D printer), I only had time to take pictures before the event. Several people were impressed to see there are still games being made for the Intellivision, when everything else was either a board/card game or a computer game to be released on Steam.

  3. The Vancouver Retro Gaming Expo is going on in Vancouver, BC on June 25th, 2022. Event info at https://www.vancouvergamingexpo.com Who's going?
  4. I went through some old pictures the other day and found some from JagFest 1998. I thought it might be nice to upload them here for posterity and see if anyone recognizes themselves or someone they know. Highlights that I remember: Hosted by Kevin Manne Battlesphere demo Thea Realm Fighters demo Steve Scavone showing Gorf 3D progress Aircars networked play Super Burnout tournament (1st place: Wes Powell) Tempest 2000 tournament (1st place: Wes Powell who absolutely crushed it) Psychedelic Pong tournament (1st place: Me) Ultra Vortek tournament (1st place: Wes Powell) Native demo (I believe this was the first time I saw/played it) Various homebrew for play loaded by bjl (if I remember correctly) Dave Bell talking about his wealth of knowledge on the Tramiels as well as his vaporware game, Defcon 1 (I believe it was his Alpine devkit that was displayed) Wes Powell successfully jumping over 2 tables Primal Rage soundtrack CD donated to me by Wes Powell (He said it was awful... I listened to it on the long drive back from New York... He was right... But I cherish it nonetheless ) Someone walking off with my copy of Secret Quest for the Atari 2600
  5. While looking through some old photos recently, I found some pics of JagFest 2001. I thought it might be nice to upload them here since most of the old sources are gone or only accessible through web archive. I may remember something incorrectly or not remember at all, so feel free to add to or correct me if you were there. Highlights that I remember: Hosted by Dan Loosen (the Goat Store) I had a booth at this one where I demoed: the real Lynx AVP prototype (this was before it was widely available) a Phase Zero prototype a 3DO with the unreleased Jaguar games, such as Robinson's Requiem, Demolition Man, Creature Shock, etc. an Atari Jaguar with every released game an Atari ST with various games an Atari 7800 with every game an Atari 5200 with various games Micah Rowe had the Brett Hull Hockey cartridge for demo The Jaguar VR with Missile Command 3D Songbird Lynx tournaments: Ponx (1st place: me). I remember playing Championship Rally, but I don't remember if it was comlynxed or if there was a tournament. Carl demoing Total Carnage, Protector SE, and other Songbird releases Dan hosting a Ram It tournament (which was the 1st time I think I saw or played the game) 10 linked Jaguars for an awesome BattleShpere tournament (I thought I remembered 16, but just saw some old articles and it was 10) Iron Soldier 3 for demo on a NUON A museum of classic systems A PCFX for demo I won a copy of Hoverstrike CD for something, but don't remember what. Since I already owned every Jaguar game, I kept it sealed... still have it to this day. While typing this up, I decided to check on a few things and found this old writeup: Unfortunately, the only JagFests I was able to attend were 1998, 2001, and 2003 (which was combined with the Austin Gaming Expo and was the last year for a U.S. JagFest). While 2003 wasn't a dedicated JagFest, I still had a great time and was glad to make the trip with my friend DoctorClu.
  6. Reading through an old technology related time line, I came across this: "From Saturday, June 15, through Sunday, September 15, Videotopia debuts at the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The traveling exhibit offers a hands-on interactive look at the history of video games." (Source: http://web.archive.org/web/20001207070200/http://www.icwhen.com:80/book/the90s/1996.html) Looks like their website's still up: http://www.videotopia.com/ So... anyone been to this? It traveled around for a few years. What was it like? Was their an earlier videogame history exhibit, or was this the first?
  7. The Southern-Fried Gaming Expo (SFGE) is a 3-day fan convention focused exclusively on gaming. The expo is held June 8-10 at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel in Atlanta, GA, and boasts over 250 full-sized arcade games, pinball machines and console systems, along with tabletop gaming, vendors, special guest speakers, a film fest, live music, wrestling, tournaments and more! SFGE is a family-friendly event that will be fun for all ages. Special Guests: STEVE RITCHIE As a pinball designer, Mr. Ritchie has created some of the most popular and best-selling games of all time including Firepower, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, ACDC, and the recently released Star Wars. Steve joined Atari as one of their earliest employees in 1974 and over the course of his career has worked for Williams, Bally/Midway, and currently designs games for Stern Pinball. Mr. Ritchie’s talents are not limited to pinball, however. Many gamers will recognize his voice as that of Shao Kahn (“FINISH HIM!”) in the groundbreaking Mortal Kombat video games. JOHN JACOBSEN For the past twelve years, and over 500 episodes, John Jacobsen has been a co-host on one of the longest running independent video game shows, and Xbox Live Community Podcast Of The Year, The Video Game Outsiders on the comedy network, Riotcast. In 2007, John was sucked into the classic arcade collecting world. His first machine was a Donkey Kong, his second a Ms. Pac-Man, within a year he turned his basement into his own personal arcade. Soon after John got his first arcade game, he started a website and weekly YouTube series called “John’s Arcade” and he immediately had a passionate following. Each week John takes his viewers on his arcade adventures in the form of road trips across the country visiting notable private and public arcades as well as gameplay and tech videos. John also shows his viewers how to restore and fix classic arcade games in a “you can do this!” type presentation. John’s Arcade currently has approx. 32,000 subscribers and over 6 million Youtube views. John’s Arcade can also be seen on over a dozen public access channels across the USA. In late 2016, John and his long time friend Jay, took their hobby the next level. Partnering with the Hangar Pub and Grill and Amherst Brewing in Amherst, MA, they put over 30 arcade machines on location in a busy college town. RICH SOMMER Tabletop fanatic and host of the popular Cardboard! podcast, Rich Sommer will be making his first trip to the Southern-Fried Gaming Expo this year. Although his love for gaming is well-documented, you may better recognize Rich from his role as Harry Crane on 92 episodes of the popular AMC drama Mad Men or recurring appearances on Netflix’s Glow, The Regular Show, or Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later. Rich will be speaking at two panels that will be immediately followed by meet and greet sessions.' ORIN DAY Some of your favorite pinball games wouldn’t be the same were it not for the skills of our newest guest, Orin Day. Mr. Day was part of the development team of Data East Pinball and remained on board when that company became SEGA pinball, and finally stayed through the transformation into the Stern Pinball we all continue to enjoy to this day. Mr. Day has programmed and developed software for over 20 of the best games in pinball including Baywatch, Independence Day, South Park, and more. We’re glad to have Mr. Day as a special guest at SFGE 2018! Additional guests listed on website and more to be announced. Photos from our 2017 event. 8. I'm not sure how well known Free Play Orlando is in the retro game community, but they have an event coming up in November that I'm thinking of attending. Since I live about 10-15 minutes away, it might be worth $25/$30 + $5 parking to check it out for 1 day. Attending as a vendor isn't all that expensive ($175 for an 8-foot table + internet + power outlet + 2 weekend passes). It might be fun to set up an upgraded ColecoVision Flashback unit as well as a Coleco ADAM or ColecoVision + Super Game Module and show off some of the newer releases. From the website: About Free Play Florida Free Play Florida 2017 is an exciting three day event that encompasses a complete Pinball, Arcade, and Console gaming experience. This November 17th thru the 19th, 2017 Free Play Florida is being held at the beautiful Doubletree Sea World by Hilton right off I-4 and International Drive. All of your classic and current pinball and arcade games will be on display for you to play, join the International Flipper Pinball Association (IFPA) sanctioned pinball tournament and compete with the best in the state of Florida, , sit in on our speaker panels that include industry icons, and visit our valued vendors selling parts, memorabilia, and some of the coolest themed art on the planet! http://wp.freeplayflorida.com/?page_id=1595 Vendor/Sponsor Information http://wp.freeplayflorida.com/?page_id=1480

  15. So who is going to the Seattle Retro Gaming Expo (SRGE)? It's coming up fast. Here's the basic info: Seattle, WA June 28th-29th, 2014 http://www.seattleretro.org/
  16. Here's a short list the various retro gaming expos (i.e. gaming conventions for older video game systems) in my area. Please add if you know of others. Ideally, let's keep this thread as just a reference list (put conversations about specific expos on a separate thread). Portland Retro Gaming Expo Located in Portland, OR In 2013, there were ~80 vendors http://retrogamingexpo.com/ Seattle Retro Gaming Expo Located in Seattle, WA In 2013, there were ~20 vendors (getting bigger each year) http://www.seattleretro.org/ Vancouver Retro Gaming Expo Located in Vancouver, BC Haven't attended but been told it is of comparable size to the Portland Retro Gaming Expo http://www.vancouvergamingexpo.com/
  17. Hey Gang, ZAPCON is back! It's going down April 12-13th once again at the Renaissance Phoenix Downtown Hotel. Tons of games set to free-play! Films! Seminars! Tournaments! Vendors! It's mostly the same deal as last year: Bring a game, get a weekend pass. Bring 2 games, get 2 weekend passes, etc. Game contributors also get in an hour early, and get an exclusive badge that non-contributors will be envious of. If you're interested in bringing games PM me your real name, phone number, and what (fully functional) pins or arcade games you'd like to bring. Unfortunately due to budget constraints we will not be doing game pick-ups this year. I am, however going to facilitate people going in 2-3 ways on rental trucks or carpooling. Send me your name, phone number and what part of town you're in, and I'll try to connect you with like minded people in your area. Also, if you have a truck or trailer with room to spare and you don't mind going a little out of your way, please let me know. ZAPCON needs you! We're also looking for vendors, sponsors and advertisers, so if you have something to sell or you want to get your name out there, PM me for details. With all your help we can make ZAPCON bigger and better than last year… Spread the word! More info at zapcon.com
  18. There is no southeast retro gaming convention that I know about. Have I missed one? Is anyone near the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area? Or even with a few hours of this area that are interested in starting one? I can help organize it. I have personally never been to a gaming convention. So experienced people would help. I've attended comic conventions before. Anyone?
  19. Hi guys, Apologies if this has been covered recently, but i searched and could not find a similar topic. Basically i will be taking a few Atari 2600's to upcoming video game expos and will be hooking one up to a vintage/retro looking orange Black & White tv. My question is: what 2600 games look pretty good in B&W? I tried some but they did not fare well (eg: The Empire Strikes Back). Wondering if there's any that will not lose out on playability due to lack of colour. Also, i would prefer to stay away from long single player type games (eg: Adventure) but rather focus on quicker arcade games that will give more people at events a chance to play and cycle through. While i have a couple dozen 2600 carts (and the Atari Jr with 126 Built-in games), i'm willing to buy something that would be good in B&W and fun for people to play Many thanks in advance!
