As a kid I got most of Mattel Electronics handhelds. Always treated them fairly well and kept the boxes, instructions, etc. For the last 30+ years, every few years or so, I'll take them out and play a few games. This week, when I took out Mattel Electronics Auto Race, it seemed to have died. After some fiddling, I managed to fix it. Here's a summary, in the hopes that someone else out there with a similar problem might be able to fix theirs also... Last time I played the game a few years ago, for the first time in maybe 7-8 years, I noticed that the LED's were kind of flickery (which I didn't remember them being years ago), and the game seemed to play slower than I remembered. Also, sometimes you'd have to turn the on/off switch a couple times to get the game to start....sometimes you'd turn it on and there'd just be faint blips scattered on the screen, or the screen would stay black. Oh well, it mostly worked, so I didn't mess with it. The other day I went to play the game and couldn't get it to play at all. Turning the switch to 'start' usually did nothing. Occasionally if you flicked back and forth, or wiggled it around a bit, you could get some random blips to show up, but it wouldn't actually play. So I decided to take it apart and take a look. The big problem with these Mattel handhelds? Those stupid triangle screws. 2 solutions that I know of. One (the good way), is to find a 3-sided, triangular shaped metal file that tapers to a small traingular point. I've got one from my grandfather, must be 75 years old, that just fits the screws pretty good. Not sure if they still make/sell files like this, but there ya go. Second (the bad way), is to just carefully drill out the screws using a drillbit just slightly smaller than the screw head. You'll get it apart, but will later have to superglue the case back together (or use rubber bands to hold it). Pull the steering button off - it was difficult on mine, but if you just keep pulling straight up and *carefully* wiggling it back and forth, it eventually pops off. Now you can remove the entire circuit board and take a good look. I assumed the problem was with the on/off switch. First I tried using wires with small alligator clips to jump the posts attaching the switch to the board, thus bypassing it and making the game always be "on". Doing that, the game would sometimes come on and play the way it had a few years ago....flickery LED's and seemingly slower gameplay. Sometimes the screen would just get random garbage blips on it. Sometimes it would start to play, and then crap out. Hmmm. Maybe not the switch, maybe one of the components is just fried. Then I was noticing a small "pot"...a little circular thing with a slot in it that you can turn with a screwdriver. You often see these in old computers (like the Atari 8-bits), and videogame systems, where it works as a color adjustment knob. Why is it in this Auto Race game??? I turned it a bit. After doing so, the game played flawlessly again....solid bright LED's, it played faster (the way I remember it being originally), and oddly enough the On/Off switch works fine all the time - it's no longer flakey. Turns out that little adjustment knob controls the speed of the game. If you play around with it you can make the game play slower or faster. So what happened? I guess after not being moved for 40 years the contacts got worn/corroded/whatever. Just moving it a bit moved the contacts to a 'fresh spot' and solved the problem. If you have a Mattel Electronics Auto Race game that seems dead, broken, acts strangely, or the start switch seems to be messed up, give this a shot. Hopefully someone else benefits from the info (because I myself was searching for "Mattel Auto Race repair" and came up with nothing!).

Hi all.. new here! Thanks for having me! I am wondering which is the best budget handheld? Ideally I would love a Steam Deck, but I can't justify that much on a handheld atm. So based on my own research it feels like its between : Anbernic 353M Anbernic RG505 Retroid Pocket 3+ Ayn Odin Pro (what is the difference between base and pro?) I love the look of the 353M, love the dpad swap on the odin, but I just wish the 353M had more RAM and was capable of PS2/GC. Can't figure out why its almost the same price as the much superior (on paper) RG505 either. Anyone know why? Just wish the 505 had the look of the 353. It looks boring IMO and the colour choices are crap. So I think the 353M is only on my list because of high ratings and it looks great, but also the linux option was attractive. But I suppose I need to look at one of the other 3 if I want PS2/GC games but came here for advice. Or maybe you know of a better handheld for that price range? My budget is upto £200/$250 (GBP/USD) require ps2/gc emulation screen larger than 4" would be nice Suggestions welcome! Cheers!

I've got 7 bins of HandHeld games for sale. This is local pickup only. Please don't ask what games are in the bins, or if a game works or not. Most games work, there are some that don't and some may have failed since last time I tested them. They are old games, stuff happens. Local pick up only Cash or Venmo only, can't take PP for these. I'm thinking $300 is a good deal for the buyer, there are a lot of games! Click on picture to expand image.

tl;dr: Play games from 21st century systems and post your times! For the third season in a row, it is time for the Modern gameplay tracker. Here are the links to previous seasons of the tracker: 2018 | 2019 So what is this? The basic idea is to post what games you played during each week, and for how long. You don't have to time it down to the minute (though some of us do), and estimates are acceptable. Then, at the end of the week, the statskeeper (that's me) totals everything up and we find out which games and platforms are seeing the most action. Each week, we have top 10 lists for consoles/computers and for individual games. Guidelines: 1. Be sure to list the system, the name of the game, and the length of time you play. Please note if the game has any alternate titles by which it's better known. If you list multiple games, please group them by platform. If you play on a backwards-compatible system, e.g. Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One or PS2 games on PS3, the game should be listed under the older platform's name. This also means that games predating 2000 played on a modern system should be posted in the classic games tracker. e.g. PS1 games played on PS2, GB/GBC games played on GBA, Wonderswan played on Wonderswan Color, Windows 95/98 games on a newer PC and so forth. 2. Each week runs Monday through Sunday (at midnight), though exceptions may occur around New Year. Try to post your times no later than night to Tuesday in your local timezone. I will generally wait until Tuesday afternoon/evening Central European Time before compiling the stats. If you post after stats have been posted, your times will be counted for the next week. Feel free to indicate in your post which dates your times relate to. 3. Playing on actual hardware is preferred, although emulators are certainly allowed. In some cases (homebrews in development, rare arcade games) there's no alternative to using an emulator. 4. Our cutoff year is 2000. That is, eligible consoles and computers have to have been first released somewhere in the world after 2000. Basically any systems released around the PlayStation 2, XBox, GameCube, Game Boy Advance or after. Anything released before this time period (including the Sega Dreamcast) please post to the Classic Game Tracker The same goes for computers: we count Windows XP or newer, but not 98 or older; Mac OS X or newer, but not OS 9 or older; and so on. 5. Arcade games released on or after January 1, 2000 are permitted. 6. You don't just have to post a bare list of times -- comments, stories, gripes, and helpful hints are always encouraged! If you're struggling with a level, got a new high score, or have some thoughts about what's great or what stinks about a particular game...well, that's the kind of stuff that makes this fun to read. How to make the statskeeper's life easier: - If you post a big list of games, please consider alphabetizing them first (after grouping them by platform). - Posting your times in minutes, rather than hours + minutes, makes things a little simpler. - Even if you don't know the exact time, it's better to post a specific number and say it's an estimate. If you say you posted a bunch of games for "between 20 minutes and an hour", I'll just average everything out to 40 minutes, but it's much better to have a sense of which games you played more and which ones you played less. - If there's room for confusion or ambiguity, please address that in advance so I don't have to research it myself. Non-US releases, homebrews in progress, alternate titles, and expanded re-releases can get especially tricky. That about covers it. If you haven't participated before, or if you did and got busy with other things, consider taking part in 2020! You may find that it has some interesting side effects -- I've found that keeping a log dramatically changes how I think about my own gaming, and mostly for the better.

From the album: Smelly's Setup
I don't have many handheld games, but the ones that I do have I enjoy playing frequently. The lynx definitely gets the most use out of all of them.© SmellyJelly

Hi everyone! I'm looking for some items that are not hard to find if you live in the US... but as I am in Canada, they are not sold here so they are VERY HARD to find for me. lol If you have one of these, contact me and we can arrange something. As I said, I'm in Canada and I'm fine with paying for the shipping costs. I just had someone send me one of the Arcade Minis and it was $16 US to ship it by itself... I know I have a sickness but I can't get enough of these things! lol If you have other mini arcade types of items that you want to sell, let me know what you have. Please note, this is #1 in the series, not #7. I have #7 and I am looking for #1 complete in the box. It can be used as long as it still looks good (I will be playing them but I want them to look good on a shelf etc too!) If you have the PacMan #1 and want to make a few extra dollars easy, I'll pay for the Asteroids which is Basic Fun Boxed Unit #5 (They are $19.87 at WalMart and even cheaper as I've seen them on clearance at some stores). But only if you have the Pac-Man. I passed up on picking this up a month ago and if I can get a PacMan, then I'd pick this one up too. Anyway, let me know. Got this one! Thanks! New additions to the list are My Arcade game units. I'm interested in the following: Heavy Barrel Caveman Ninja Galaga Again, if you have something else of interest, let me know. I haven't gotten into the Super Impulse Tiny Arcades as I think they may be too small but maybe I'll get those as well... let me know what ya got! Have a great day everyone and thanks for reading!

With life being more busy and complicated than ever a lot of us turn to portable systems to get in gaming fixes without having to be tethered to a television set, so I thought it could be fun to have a thread for people to show off and talk about the systems they use the most for modern gaming on the go. The key words here are "the most", since I'm sure many of us have collected several modern portables, so the question is which one do you actually take with you the majority of the time? Are you a fan of the Switch or 3DS, or maybe the Vita is more to your liking? Maybe you're happy just playing Atari 2600 games so an Atari Flashback Portable does it for you, or perhaps all of your portable modern gaming needs are now met by just a smartphone or tablet? In any case, snap a picture and let us know! My modern handheld of choice is a Galaxy Style New 3DS XL. I've had a bit of a love affair with the idea of stereoscopic 3D gaming ever since the original 3DS was debuted, but it wasn't until the New 3DS line of systems came along with face tracking technology to keep the 3D image in focus that the idea I was so fond of became a practical reality. Now I can play games in 3D all day long with no eye strain, headaches, or motion sickness like I used to get from the old 3DS systems after 15 or 20 minutes of playing a game in 3D. I also really like the StreetPass and Play Coin pedometer features of the 3DS systems, both of which are fun little additions that encourage you to take it with you wherever you go. The eShop and Virtual Console are pretty great too. If Nintendo ever releases a smaller and more pocket friendly Switch system I might give it a try, but in it's current form the Switch is just a little too big and bulky for me to carry around; so I'm quite happy just tossing my New 3DS XL in a slim travel case and letting it ride around in my pocket everywhere I go.

Do you have to desolder the speaker wires in order to be able to put in a new polarizer film? Thank you :3
