Although this is slated for a bigger upcoming project, I figured it would likely be useful in a stand-alone application as well. Since I have a new compact motherboard design that will require an internal mouse interface with the ability to easily switch between joystick ports, and if desired completely disappear (stealth mode), I began work on a new mouse interface chip for the A8. It could have just as easily been used in an Atari ST, or with a bit of code finagling also made to work in an Amiga. Initially I looked at some of the GPL PS/2 mouse-to-ST/Amiga offerings, thinking that I would simply add what code I needed. However once I dived in, I quickly decided this would not be a good way to go, and so began my journey to write mouse code from scratch in my favorite development application FlowCode. Anyway suffice it to say i am probably 85% done, with the last 15% dedicated to supporting mouse movement acceleration (very tricky stuff). So here's a look at how this new mouse chip will be implemented in my new project, along with of course a TK-II keyboard chip (this schematic shows part of the I/O section). Unlike the mouse support that existed on the early versions of TK-II firmware, and then was later abandoned, this one has true ST mouse emulation as its primary goal (plus some enhancements). Yes I know people would love to have a USB mouse instead (as well as a USB keyboard interface), but with all that I have going on I'm afraid this is the best that I can presently do. Especially considering the learning curve required to implement this in USB as well likely needing to switch over to a different processor family to really do it right (yet another learning curve to climb). Besides despite what the rumors would have you believe, there are plenty of NEW PS/2 mice and keyboards still available, as well as some that offer wireless support. And lets face it, PS/2 protocol is a hell of a lot easier to work with. Ohh and did I mention that I get lazy from time to time . Anyway I doubt if I'll be making any PCBs for stand-alone plug-in usage, but if someone is ambitious, I will be providing the PIC MCU Firmware (in JOY2PIC and Microchip file versions). Some people know that TI experimented with porting its best-known games to Intellivision. Well, much later, Namco planned to roll up the market for retro-gaming by producing software for the TI-99/4A. A Namco intern told their boss to build on the nostalgia for "Munk-Man" and this is what happened. I found the binary on an MSX forum earlier this year: (k2.dsk or download here) contains a single E/A 3 object file "K2" without Namco markings. The program name is K2. TK-III Proposed Product Specifications May 2nd, 2016 (revised May 10th, 2016) Michael St. Pierre This will be the third generation TransKey product, with the focus to create a better mouse experience and also expand into other communication possibilities. The goal is to continue to have full hardware transparency, or in other words, not require any software drivers to support most features. This will be an internal upgrade only, similar to the TK-II-PIGGYBACK version. Keyboard Support Protocol: PS/2 (because its way easier than USB) Standard Features: Mimic existing TK-II Feature Set Improvements: Bring Atari Keyboard Compatibility up to 99.9% Mouse Support (See Newly Added Features) TK-II Mouse Arrow Key Emulation will be dropped Newly Added Features ST Mouse Emulation utilizing standard PS/2 Mouse Hardware Protocol: PS/2 Translated to simulated X/Y encoder (ST mouse look a like) fed to joystick port Left & Right buttons to mimic same ST mouse actions Middle button (when in mouse mode) = reserved - TBD Scroll Wheel (when in mouse mode) = reserved - TBD Trak-Ball Mode (via mouse emulation) Emulate 'trackball mode' for CX-22 and early production CX-80 Emulate 'joystick mode' for non Trac-Ball games and applications Note: late model CX-80 'trackball mode' was the same as an ST Mouse so will automatically work with TK-III's PS/2-to-ST mouse emulation Paddle Mode (via mouse emulation) PS/2 mouse scroll wheel emulates paddle controller pot PS/2 mouse left or right button = paddle trigger button Touch Pad Mode (via mouse emulation) Emulate CX-77 Touch Pad Emulate 'The Rat' Joystick Mode (via keyboard emulation) Option to use keyboard NumPad arrow and diagonal keys as joystick input RS232 Terminal Mode (driver-less version) Connection: Via built-in UART, level translation circuit, and D-Sub 9 pin male COM Port connection, 3 wire interface Baudrates: 2400, 9600, 19.2K Data Config: 1 start bit - 8 data bits - 2 stop bits - no parity Transmit mode is toggled (default = normal keyboard) Manual key presses will transmit ASCII equivalents via RS232 Received ASCII characters will send matching POKEY key presses (emulation) Incoming data will be fully buffered to match POKEY’s slower speed XON/XOFF software handshake for incoming flow control (keyboard has priority) Optional CTRL+SHIFT incoming data append feature (stealth mode) Parallel-to-Serial RS232 Transmission Mode (requires software driver, supercedes all other joystick/mouse related use when enabled) Making PortA an output, and then loading 8-Bit parallel data, initiates RS232 transmission when this feature is enabled See 'RS232 Terminal Mode' for hardware capabilities and connection specs Atari CX85 Hardware Support (no driver required) This would be a driver-less implementation of the CX85 numeric numpad hardware produced by Atari Keyboard Controlled Multi-Purpose Output One general purpose keyboard controlled switchable output Configurability Paddle, Joystick, Mouse, CX85 hardware and/or emulation will be swappable independently between joystick ports 1&2. The configuration will be stored in non-volatile EEPROM Project Timeline: Development to begin June 2016, and be completed by March 2017 (Best case scenario, but we all know how that goes. So don't hold your breath) Project Ownership: All materials and plans to be distributed within the Public Domain (this will be a DIY product or may be produced and sold by others for profit) Just to be clear, this will be an entirely new branch of the TransKey product line, and will not share either hardware or software with the previous versions (exception: some code will be migrated from TK-II, and the TK-II-INTFC board will be compatible). First the good news... I found some time to install my PS/2 Keyboard adapter in the TI today. I drilled a few holes... ...mounted the connector... I think it looks pretty nice... ... so I closed it all up and admired the view... And now the bad news... #1) It will not work when the both keyboards are plugged in, so I have to run without the original keyboard hooked up. #2) And the depressing one... not all the keys are functioning. At this point I'm not sure what it is, and I'm not going to screw with it for a few days. Any ideas? -

I'm offering PS/2 mouse adapter for Atari ST/Amiga with the following features: Atari ST/Amiga mode (switchable) third mouse button support on a machines that support it Slow mode for other computers, namely XL/XE, which cannot read the default full speed small enough to fit inside ST kebyoard (see photos) The modes can be switched durning power on by holding a mouse button durning power on: LMB switches between Atari ST and Amiga mode. RMB switches between default and slow mode. You can hold both buttons to switch both modes in the same time. The actual configuration is then stored into internal EEPROM. The price is 12 EUR + 3 EUR shipping to Europe or 4 EUR outside Europe. I'm accepting Paypal only.
