  1. Well what can I say other than I got very creative today and whipped out this little jewel, designed to be installed internally. There's a Newer Design Available at: https://ataribits.weebly.com/sdrive.html Board Top Board Bottom The board design is meant to fit directly above the SIO jack, with the only caveat being the need to cut a small slot in the A8's plastic case above the SIO jack to access the Micro-SD slot EDIT: If you want to be able to fully insert and extract the uSD card it'll require a bit more access to the card and likely require a bigger slot to be cut in the case, and/or an extended grip attached to the end of the uSD card. Also thinking it would be great if someone created a 3D printable tunnel. The Schematic... SDrive-Simple_schema.pdf Here's the Micro-SD Breakout board I chose to go with on this project. AdaFruit P/N: 254 For those that wish to go with OSH Park on the PCB manufacture, here's a link to the shared project: https://oshpark.com/shared_projects/39XO8i67 You'll get 3 boards with Free International Shipping for $19 Boards coming out of the first sample run were successful in operation, therefore the gerbers and firmware downloads provided on this page are good to go. Sorry, but no BOM. However it's a pretty simple project - just use the schematic to determine what's needed. Capacitors should have 0.2" (5.08mm) lead spacing. The resistor is a standard 1/4 watt 5% or better tolerance. And the diode is a Schottky in a DO35 case style (2 possible part numbers are provided in the schematic). Headers are 0.1" (2.54mm) male pin headers, with one already included when ordering the AdaFruit 254. The one for the SIO connections is purely optional, since the wires could be directly soldered to the pads instead. Oh yeah, the 16 Mhz crystal should be spec'ed as 20pf (Jameco Part no.: 325139). This idea was born out of the discussion in this topic.
  2. FujiNet is a 1.6X - SDrive-Max is flashed to 1.3 - It was from Vintage Computer. It has a 9341 display and it looks like it has an UNO2SIO board - I attached the SDrive-Max to the FujiNet SIO a few months ago and set it all aside until recently. When I tried to use the SDrive-Max without the FujiNet, it wouldn't boot any DOS or disk images and wouldn't load D0: - It also does not boot on a different Atari 8-bit computer. I opened the SDrive-Max, removed the display, tightened the cables, and reassembled the device and re-flashed the SDrive-Max to 1.3 - It still did not boot on SIO or external power. Strangely, the SDrive-Max DOES boot when it's attached to the FujiNet SIO. I also tried recopying sdrive.atr to the SD card and trying the original SD card - Neither SD card boots. Is there any reason this would happen? Is there a way to make the S-Drive Max boot again as the only SIO device? Thanks! AK
  3. Hi - I have a .ATR as drive2 on my SDriveMax. The .ATR contains all the example ASM programs from the good old ‘Atari Roots’ book. From MyDOS 4.53 (and OS A+) I can see drive2 is full of MAC/65 .SRC files. However, from the MAC/65 prompt when I try to load (‘ENTER’) a .SRC file I keep getting a 164 Error (which is not in the MAC/65 manual). It does attempt to read from D2:, you hear several ‘read beeps’. I have tried other .SRC files on the same .ATR and have moved the .ATR to drive1 and I keep getting the same error in MAC/65. As I am using SDriveMax, I tried lowering the SIO speed but that did not help. Is there some known trick when using MAC/65 and SDriveMax? Do I need to use a different boot loader location maybe? I am rusty with MAC/65 so maybe I am doing something silly. Thanks for any/all ideas.
  4. [Update - I got a 16K 400 to boot a DOS 2.5 image from my SDriveMax. So that works. I’m guessing that sdrive.atr requires more than 16K] I’m trying to test the SIO ports on several 400s. My SDriveMax works fine with my 48K 800 but does not work on multiple 16K 400s. It starts to load but then goes wonky. Can someone confirm the minimum memory requirement for SDriveMax to function? Thanks! FYI - I read that FujiNet requires a minimum of 24K of memory so that’s a no go on stock 400s
  5. I've been working on a small project - after building an SdriveMax. I've wanted to make it smaller and internalize it. Have it working now. Pros: A little cheaper - no screen, no SIO plug Internal - less stuff to lug around Smaller - uses a smaller Arduino with the same chip (Arduino Nano) Powered off constant 5v rail of the main power switch, power controlled using the channel selector switch Built in the 7407 circuit so should play nice on the SIO bus Cons: Setup is hard - SDrive Max relies on screen calibration - I had to burn the EEPROM from a working SDrive Max using AVRdude over ICSP Future directions: See if kbr will release a headless firmware that doesn't stop waiting for initial screen calibration Make an all in one board that uses surface mount and doesn't require an Arduino Nano and a separate TF card breakout Questions?
  6. Good evening, Before I start, please feel free to comment on anything here where I may be doing something silly, as openly classing myself as amateur Atarian here after returning to using after over 30 years, and as a kid I would have never dared open the box up or do any of this stuff. I'm enjoying playing here, and objective is to both restore system to best it can be and have some fun along the way. Hope my ramblings may amuse and appreciate any advice. I recently posted this regarding graphics issues with my 800XL recently recovered from the loft : I'm pleased to note that following advice, I found a power supply that seems to improve matters in terms of interference seen on screen (understanding noise from USB was a serious thing after trying a few alternate adapters and a 'professionally' made cable (e.g. not by me)). USB power always noisy giving varying distortion, so moved on. I still note that I see out of place hashed pixels, which when compared to same software on an emulator is not very clean, so believe I still have a graphics issue and would love to know best way to fix (did add myself to pre-order list for a Sophia, and wonder if that would bypass issue, or not?) Unsure what this PSU was originally for - I hoard stuff so had a box full, but rated +5V 2.4A - switching power supply made by "CUI STACK" . Anyway it's not fuzzy, just cleaner pixel issues, but this post not about that (unless general system issue and related, please comment). So, I received my SDrive Max that I ordered from voidabone on Ebay. I guess could have put one together and may later build another myself, but I'm lazy, and also I like the case that came with it. Generally love this thing. As lost/discarded tapes, I only had a few cartridges, so now able to load a lot of software sourced from http://a8.fandal.cz/ Found a few gems I used to play as a kid. Start Raiders (lost cartridge somewhere along the way), Draconis, Thrust, Ninja to mention a few. Great nostalgia. Interestingly though, some ATRs or XEX files will not load properly / fully. Same will load fine on Altirra-3.90 , but that's not just the same is it Many will not load with odd screen corruption just as it seems to be about to complete. Two to note as examples, Defender ends like this: Then goes to a black screen. Hijack! is most odd, it seems to fully load: Thing is, the train is animated, but the clouds do not move, the helicopter does not appear and music does not play. Cannot start game, just stuck there but scrolling text moves ok. Again, loads fine on emulator. This is where I get silly. Searching around I find a CAS file, and Wav for Hijack! on http://www.atari.org.pl/tape/4/atari-smash-hits-4-hijack! I have an Atari 1010, but it has a broken tray, and PSU dead. Again, I found a compatible PSU, and soldered to connector and got power and motor works, and moves after OPT+Start and a key. So I'm thinking : I no longer have anything to record tapes with. I did check as recently grabbed a USB walkman device to capture some old mix tapes I also found in the loft, but it won't record, I used with Audacity to record to mp3, but I digress (often). Seems I started investigating the dead 1010 years ago not realizing it was the PSU as screws were out and was all open. I get thinking - What if I can find on the board where the audio comes in from the read-head and insert signal from a PC. I have a nice little "Maker Hart" mixer that I use to take sound from my work laptop, 2 PCs and an Alexa, and it has a 'record' output that sends a non-amplified signal out. This was mostly blind luck, as with it powered and connected to Atari, I was checking voltages where I thought it was (with Atari in START-Opt mode ready to load), and as I probed with a meter , i hear a slight audio buzz. Out comes the soldering iron and ......well: and before long, after playing hijack!.wav file in windows media: Then a false start: So I tried another file and after a time: So, went back to Hijack! and similar error. Then remembered I used to have to forward wind some tapes past the leader else they failed to load for some reason, so I started file a bit later. This time, loaded to about last 4 blocks, then heard a familiar change of tone and load failed. I realize perhaps a notification came up on PC, so disabled network via ncpa.cpl and tried again and finally in' in, have properly loaded title screen and i'm playing: Please note the pixel garbage on far right of picture, which i seem to get on a number of games I load. So conclusions: - There is nothing about this game it's self that my Atari doesn't like, as I can load it from tape (well sort of) and play it. - The S Drive Max seems to be source of problem loading some files. It's running KBr V1.2 , and I re-flashed it from PC after something silly happened and I seemed to be stuck on a reversed screen with touch-screen not responding. I realize from further reading around I perhaps could have done something else to re-calibrate, however it was on V1.2 anyway, so I assume my re-flash hasn't caused this (not 100% if was issue before, as I was still getting to grips with it). - I think lock-down has sent me a little crazy re trying my 1010 tape hack. This pretty much working first time has amused me a little too much Any comments on fixes for the S-drive loading issues or the slightly off graphics would be greatly appreciated. I believe it's quite a high percentage of software that will not load. Perhaps not 50%, but a lot. Take care all. TJ
  7. HI. Some time go my friend (Drygol/Lamers) has bought a 2.8" display ... but received a 2.4" mcufriend based on ILI9325 chip. As the firmware do not support this display, I have done "driver" that support this lcd controller. Link with compiled firmware and link to source code that support this LCD is available here: https://retrohax.net/atari-800-xl-refurb-sdrive-max/ Pull request is pending, and hopefully will be merged with official firmware soon. Best Willy
  8. I recently bought a plain Atari 800. I just cobbled together an SDrive-MAX and got it working powered by the USB connector, but when I connect the SIO +5V line and remove the USB power supply it doesn't work right. It sort of turns on, but the screen doesn't always show the whole display (sometimes there are thin horizontal "scanlines" over parts of the screen)* and disk functionality seems to be missing. It doesn't finish drawing its UI until after the Atari has gone into BASIC or Memo Pad. Going by posts like this one here (http://atariage.com/forums/topic/212003-what-good-is-an-850/?do=findComment&comment=2748745), which say that the 850 allows the SDrive-MAX to boot up completely before the A800 is turned on due to the 850's dedicated power supply, I decided to reconnect the SIO +5V line and run it through the 850. *(I may be misremembering whether the "scanline" appearance still persists in the newest SDrive-MAX I've built, when it's being powered only from the 800 with no intervening 850; it's possible only my earlier attempt which was really broken had that problem.) However, the result seems to be mostly the same; the SDrive isn't powered on at all until I turn on the 800, and when it does sort of power up, the Atari doesn't seem to be able to boot from it. When I go this route, the screen starts out with the "scanlines" but those eventually get replaced by the actual contents of the screen; but by the time I have the normal UI screen displayed, the 800 is already in BASIC. There doesn't seem to be enough time for the SDrive to finish initializing before the Atari tries to boot. Will BigBen's mod (http://atariage.com/forums/topic/286669-sdrive-max-and-atari-850/?do=findComment&comment=4189162) allow me to power the SDrive from the 850 and 800 alone? More SDrive-MAX questions: Is it dangerous to wire the SIO +5V line to the Arduino and have it also plugged into a USB power supply? I would assume so. Is there an editable (e.g. STEP or IGES) file for Kbr's XL-style case? I've printed it from STL twice, using somewhat different 3D printer settings, but both times the bottom plate is too long to fit into the top without trimming; that and the pegs that go up through the Arduino are just barely tall enough to be flush with the board; I'd rather have them stick up a little bit above it. Also, backing up a bit, I'd like to know what's the story with the Option, Select, Start, and System Reset keys as pertains to booting programs and restarting the computer. I've been looking around on Google and in these forums (and in the 800 Owner's Guide) and haven't found much. Specifically, I'm wondering if the advice to hold one or more of those keys while turning the computer on, or hold one or more of them while hitting System Reset, pertains to all 8-bits or just to XLs and XEs (for instance, I know that holding Option allows you to bypass BASIC on XLs and XEs, since their BASIC is built in and not on a cartridge). I've tried various combinations of them while trying to boot the SDrive-MAX and haven't found any of them to do anything noticeable. Thanks.
  9. Is the SDrive-MAX compatible with the Atari 800 (non-XL), and if so is there a minimum RAM requirement?
