  1. Hello guys, I was checking out David Harley's website and I saw this game announced. http://www.intellivision.us/intvgames/tennis/tennis.php The game looks like the fantastic Intellivision Tennis but with 1 player option! I think that Tennis was one of the best sport games for the INTV and I always dreamed about playing it 1 player. I am wondering if anyone has played this game and if it really delivers the promise of a 1 player Intelliivision tennis. Thank you! PS By the way Super Chef Burgertime was also announced. I guess this is the Beefdrop clone that David introduced some months ago.
  2. Some days sports games are all that you find!
  3. Overview Mallard Season is a waterfowl shooter for the Atari 2600. It is open source licensed and the source code is freely available. Objective Shoot all the ducks before they escape. Aim the cursor at the duck and fire. If the duck is hit, it will fall down to the ground. If you miss 3 times or take too long the duck will escape. Controls Note if a button is not listed, it means it is unused. Joystick Up - Move cursor up Down - Move cursor down Left - Move cursor left Right - Move cursor right Fire - Fires bullet Switches Reset - Starts a new game You can download the ROM from the downloads section Feel free to discuss and ask questions here!
  4. Hello! Would I have any interested takers who would like a newly-revamped hack of Sears' Steeplechase game for Atari 2600?! How about some improvements (choose your horse, choose race type [steeplechase/flat race], pari-mutuel wagering options, ...)?! Thank You!
  5. Adding back in the title screen from the disk version, which Atari took out for their XE Cartridge release. I'm using the XEX conversion, which doesn't include the simple Atari title screen from the XE cartridge release (another XEX version out there includes it). This is a lightly enhanced title screen, which changes some fonts, changes some colors, and adds some colors (+4). I'm also working on a more fully enhanced version, which will include a lot of edits for the graphics and a lot of color addition/changes. The PAL version has the colors optimized for PAL on the title screen only. I don't think the game itself considers PAL color differences. I may look into changing colors for PAL on the in-game later. 6. So here we are in the final! It was an action-packed semi-final where we saw two great bouts. The finalists are: Enduro (Activision) vs Super Football (Atari) Both finalists had to deal with some tough opposition, especially in the later rounds. Enduro had to deal with a preliminary round and there was quite the discontent that such an illustrious title had to even qualify for this tournament. Going against one of its predecessors, Night Driver, proved to be a good warm-up for Enduro. It went into that bout confidently, but overly so. Next it faced a favourite of this announcer, Realsports Soccer and it really never stood much of a change when all aspect were considered. In the round of 16, it had to face its first heavyweight challenger, Winter Games. Although WG put up a great battle, Enduro prevailed yet again. In the quarter-final it faced a title contender that some would have expected to win the tournament, but eventually California Games was defeated as well. In the semi-final we saw a great battle against My Golf which arguably was the surprise package of the tournament. In the other bracket, Super Football may have had an easier path which was also loaded with great competition. In the first round, it went up with one of its fellow football games, Super Challenge Football. A good bout, but Super Football proved to be superior very quickly. The round of sixteen it faced a solid opponent in Summer Games which was a great spectacle. The quarter-final saw an all-Atari battle against Track&Field which was beat surprising some people. The semi-final gave us a preview as to how it may fare against racing opposition by facing another Atari title with Pole Position. This was a great bout which proved that perhaps Pole Position may have over-extended itself. So let's start with our final bout for the best sports game on the Atari 2600: Enduro (Activision) vs Super Football (Atari) !!! Enduro starts on the offensive right away. This is a game that any casual player can pick up quickly and get the basics right away. Good control, turning left and right, and a nice linear acceleration with the firebutton. Super Football takes a bit longer to pick; this is certainly a game targeted to the hardcore football fan or someone interested. Reading the manual is a must, as the various plays are listed. The graphics in Enduro are clean and simple, while Super Football brings in that unique POV that you won't see in any other game. Enduro works well within the limitations of the Atari VCS, while Super Football takes advantage of the later generation offerings with a large game with more detailed graphics and a lot of the tricks that render flickering minimal with so many objects on the screen. Sound-wise neither game is stellar, as simple sound effects with the exception of the crowd roar when a touchdown is scored being significant. Enduro's availability spanned pretty much the main lifetime of the 2600, while Super Football as 1989 offering found a home in a lot fewer households. Ultimately, the question is again, which one is more fun. In this case Enduro excels in its playability and pummels Super Football. Our champion by a 3rd round KO: ENDURO!!!! So the best sports game on the Atari 2600 is Enduro! Not many will be shocked as it indeed one of the finest games on the console and pretty much a mainstay on everyone's top 10 list. It would be interesting to see how Enduro would have fared against other titles. Could another title like Pole Position, Decathlon, Realsports Tennis, Realsports Volleyball or Track&Field provide a different challenge that would have beat Enduro? Perhaps one day we'll try a different tournament with different pairings.
  7. Oh my, there has been quite the delay from the preliminary round to the first round. All things considered, these 2600 games have been around for years, so a few months won't matter. So the 12 qualifiers from the preliminary round, join another 20 games for the 32 contenders in the first-round. The match-ups were done randomly, the only restrictions are: preliminary participants don't get paired together we keep games from the same company separate in the first round So the match-ups for the 1st round are: BMX Airmaster (TNT Games) vs Realsports Football (Atari) California Games (Epyx) vs Realsports Baseball (Atari) Enduro (Activision) vs Realsports Soccer (Atari Golf (Atari) vs Skiing (Activision) Grand Prix (Activision) vs Winter Games (Epyx) Indy 500 (Atari) vs Decathlon (Activision) Motorodeo (Atari) vs Tennis (Activision) Sprintmaster (Atari) vs My Golf (HES) Pole Position (Atari) vs Ice Hockey (Activision) Titlematch Pro Wrestling (Absolute) vs Realsports Boxing (Atari) Trick Shot (Imagic) vs Realsports Volleyball (Atari) Pete Rose Baseball (Absolute) vs Super Baseball (Atari) Super Football (Atari) vs Super Challenge Football (M-Network) Summer Games (Epyx) vs Realsports Tennis (Atari) Track&Field (Atari) vs Skate Boardin' (Absolute) Street Racer (Atari) vs Super Challenge Baseball (M-Network) 1. BMX Airmaster (TNT Games) vs Realsports Football (Atari) BMX Airmaster had an easy contest in the previous round against Homerun and barely broke a sweat. In the first round it is facing a very strong contender in Realsports Football. One of the three football games in the 1st round, Realsports brought a lot of innovative play into the VCS. Graphically BMX looks stunning and has some great control mechanism. Football is certainly pushing it with 10 concurrent players on a 2D field and a very simple colour scheme. The calling of plays in Football is certainly an acquired taste, and as you control the player you can basically do what you want. BMX Airmaster is just a more polished game considering it was released in 1990 vs the silver age of Atari gaming for the Realsports series. Winner by unanimous decision: BMX Airmaster. 2. California Games (Epyx) vs Realsports Baseball (Atari) A stalwart from the 8bit computer line, CG comes into the first round with a lot of swagger after obliterating 2kb Basketball previously. Realsports Baseball comes in to provide a more solid challenge, but its simplistic graphics, bird noises for sounds, frustrating control and strange pitching cannot muster a strong enough challenge for CG with all of its events which play as good as most stand-alone games, multi-player and great music. Baseball put a brave fight but doesn't last long. Winner by 2nd round KO: California Games! 3. Enduro (Activision) vs Realsports Soccer (Atari) Enduro was somewhat offended even having to contest an initial bout with Night Driver which it completely destroyed. Realsports Soccer comes in to put in a good challenge but it is simply overwhelmed. Graphically and sound-wise, Soccer has not response to Enduro's crisp display, great animation and solid sound effects. Enduro just motors past Realsports Soccer leaving it writhing in the penalty box in what is a clear dive. Winner by 1st round KO: Enduro!! 4. Golf (Atari) vs Skiing (Activision) The pundits cannot believe the upset of the previous round and it has been rewarded by facing another game from the slopes: Skiing. Skiing comes running smoothly with the clean execution of a simple and straight-forward gameplay zig-zagging ahead of Golf which today seems to have an off-day. Way too many drives into the rough and it seems that Golf's worse graphics and specialized audience just can't complete with the crisper and cooler Skiing. Winner by split-decision: Skiing 5. Grand Prix (Activision) vs Winter Games (Epyx) Grand Prix had a lucky initial draw which allowed it to beat meaker opposition previously. Unfortunately it has to face a strong opponent in Winter Games. As a later-generation VCS game, Winter Games bring in the multi-game which flashier graphics, multi-player, national anthems, and challenging games. Grand Prix tries to evade Winter Games and is ultimately completely outmatched. Winner by 2nd round TKO: Winter Games 6. Indy 500 (Atari) vs Decathlon (Activision) Indy 500 made it into the first round after putting up a good qualifying fight previously. Unfortunately it's facing a game from the Bronze Age and coming from one of the best in the business. Even though exhausted after doing the 1,500m run and damaging two joysticks, it's multi-player and multi-event game just leaves the crowd roaring after Indy 500 hits the canvas for the 2nd time and doesn't get back up. Winner by 1st round KO: Decathlon 7. Motorodeo (Atari) vs Tennis (Activision) Motorodeo strides in with a lot of horse power against one of the trusted favourites in everyone's library: Activision's Tennis. Probably one of the best games to pick up quickly with the expected quality and level of control that makes it very popular. Average graphics and simple sounds against the graphical extravaganza of Motorodeo. It basically comes down to what is more playable and Tennis just perseveres Winner by split-decision: Tennis 8. Sprintmaster (Atari) vs My Golf (HES) Sprintmaster brings to the 2600 a coin-up classic against the only original title from HES. And what a game it is. Excellent graphics, a swing control later seen in modern consoles and arcades, club selection and more detailed putting. The sounds are poor compared to the roaring engines of Sprintmaster, but My Golf is just an excellent golf. Winner by KO in the 3rd round: My Golf! 9. Pole Position (Atari) vs Ice Hockey (Activision) The classic racing game Pole Position faces one of the few sports games that Activision has produced. Ice-Hockey brings in 3v3 action that makes the usual VCS limitations very clear. It doesn't generate the fun and excitement that you would expect from a fast-paced Hockey game. Pole Position brings in the arcade tracks to the 70s console and straight away races past everyone. Ice Hockey is down for the count. Winner by KO in the 2nd round: Pole Position 10. Titlematch Pro Wrestling (Absolute) vs Realsports Boxing (Atari) Two ring entrants. Both have four characters to choose from and both have a complex control scheme. This one goes really back and forth. Graphically similar, they are both games from the later era of VCS games. At the end there is a not a lot separating both entrants and Realsports Boxing edges Titlematch. Winner by split-decision: Realsports Boxing. 11. Trick Shot (Imagic) vs Realsports Volleyball (Atari) The crowd takes the opportunity to grab some refreshments while this match goes on. Trick Shot becomes a one-trick pony very quickly and struggles to mount a good defence on top of a non-existent offence. Volleyball just spikes the opponent to the canvas with its control, cleaner graphics and simply more fun gameplay. Winner by KO in the 2nd round: Realsports Volleyball 12. Pete Rose Baseball (Absolute) vs Super Baseball (Atari) The two giants of Baseball games on the 2600 face-off to determine who is the best baseball game. I wouldn't bet on it, but Pete Rose Baseball had a massive edge on the graphical front, with detailed graphics in sections of the diamonds as well as supporting different pitches. Super Baseball takes a refined approach that makes it the best game for a quick baseball round, but ultimately, the sheer technical advancement of Pete Rose Baseball takes Super Baseball down. Winner by KO in the 1st round: Pete Rose Baseball 13. Super Football (Atari) vs Super Challenge Football (M-Network) And now we have the Football face-off! Here we have the Atari version with it's 3D-like view, jumbotron and ability to select plays. Mattel's version looks tired, simple and way out of its league. This was a non-contest from the beginning. Winner by TKO in the 1st round: Super Football 14. Summer Games (Epyx) vs Realsports Tennis (Atari) Summer Games comes into the mix with a solid computer gaming background while facing amember of the Realsports family, Tennis. While perhaps the least fun member of the Epyx 2600 collection, it boasts a good set of games, great sound effects and multi-player. Tennis brings in a more advanced version of the game that even allows you to enter your initials. At the end of the day, the variety and technical advancement just makes Summer Games too powerful to beat. Winner by KO in the 2nd round: Summer Games 15. Skate Boardin' (Absolute) vs Track&Field (Atari) Skate Boardin' had a solid initial fight and showed us what it was made of. Unfortunately Track&Field has no intention of going down easy. A solid arcade conversion of a popular game, it brings in a multi-event game for up to four player, while SB shows off a massive map in which too explore. Both are very good at what they do. It comes down to fun and replay. Track&Field just wins across the board. Winner by unanimous decision: Track&Field 16. Street Racer (Atari) vs Super Challenge Baseball (M-Network) The last bout gives people the chance to leave early and get out of the parking lot before it gets busy. Super Challenge Baseball looks bemused at Street Racer, this is a lightweight bout and the SCB just brings a more fun game. A better layout for the diamond and playability just trumps across the board for Street Racer. This was over even before it began. Winner by KO in the first round: Super Challenge Baseball And so we have it, a great first round with some great battles and some mismatches. Will Enduro and California Games maintain their momentum? Will we see another same sport match-up with Tennis vs Realsports Tennis, or Pete Rose Baseball against Super Challenge Baseball? Find out soon, as will do random draws and may see company games fighting against each other From Epyx (3), Atari (5), or Activision (4). We have 16 games advancing to the next round: BMX Airmaster (TNT Games) California Games (Epyx) Enduro (Activision) Winter Games (Epyx) Skiing (Activision) Decathlon (Activision) Tennis (Activision) My Golf (HES) Pole Position (Atari) Realsports Boxing (Atari) Realsports Volleyball (Atari) Pete Rose Baseball (Absolute) Super Football (Atari) Summer Games (Epyx) Track&Field (Atari) Super Challenge Baseball (M-Network)
  8. Hello, everyone. I am currently working on getting to a playable state as fast as possible, a game of Dodge ball for the VCS. It has been on my life list for a long time to do, and now I am finally tackling it. It is a 2K cart, done in homage to the original launch titles, in that the graphics are simple, there will be multiple variations around the core game, and the focus is on solid two player gameplay. It will require the joystick controllers. Latest Release: Latest build can be found here: https://github.com/tschak909/dodgeball/releases/tag/playtest1a Basic rules: * Two players, in a playfield, with or without obstacles. * Players can move freely around field and obstacles * There is a computer controlled ball (using BL object) which will bounce around the playfield freely using PONG physics. * Each player also has at their disposal, a ball which can be thrown by pressing trigger (using M0 and M1). * Ball will automatically retract to player after user settable decay time (short, medium, long) * if Computer ball hits a player, point is subtracted (unless 0). * if P0's ball hits P1, P0 gets +1 points, P1 gets -1 (unless 0), and vice-versa. * if P1 presses trigger at just the right moment when the ball is colliding with player, the above point rule flips, vice versa with other player. * in both cases, ball is returned to the player, to be used immediately. * Game ends after timer lapse (the classic 2 minutes 16 timer lapse) * Game score blinks when timer is about to expire * Game will indicate ball capture with color cycling display and sound effects * Each ball bounce will be an appropriate ping. The idea is to have game variations, which will vary the following: * Playfield shape/obstacles * Player ball retract time * differences in player movement physics (dodgeball on ice?) * difficulty switches will set _something_ ... either player size, or the addition of holes on the horizontal ends of field so that ball can wrap around? I am working on the code publically in github: http://www.github.com/tschak909/dodgeball Once I have the first playable ROM, I will post it in this thread. Right now, the kernel is stable, and the motion code is roughly 30% done. Once the motion code is roughly 90% done, I'll put in the collision detection, and that should be enough to get feedback. -Thom p.s. a picture of the kernel with a playfield that I am borrowing from Combat:
  9. In order: Decathlon Realsports Soccer Pole Position Track&Field Enduro Realsports Boxing Tennis California Games Realsports Baseball Winter Games Decathlon This is the game that I got because I was so hooked on the Hyper Olympics (Track & Field) arcade game. Released in time to take advantage of the Los Angeles 1984 Olympics, and to cash in with the following of Carl Lewis, Edwin Moses, and I suppose Ken Jenner, this was an excellent game. I ended up saving for over a year to buy this game (games at the time in Europe weren't cheap). I spent way too many afternoons playing and while I got mighty close to 10,000 points, I never reached that gold medal level. I still enjoy playing it, although as I get older, my joystick speed isn't what it used to be. I may one day just build my own cheat controller for this! Realsports Soccer Man oh man. I played soooo many games on this cartridge pretending to be my favourite players (always attackers I suppose, even though I played as defender myself). I remember borrowing this game from one of my friends, and probably one of the few times were I must have played for eight hours straight (not possible with my life now). The graphics, control and animation are not great, but as soccer fan, this was probably as close I'd get to Intellivision's NASL Soccer. Pole Position This is one of the (few) arcade games that I could master. I would basically qualify in 1st place and then able to race the four laps. I actually remember buying this at the Kmart in 89 and being excited to plop it into the console. I was a bit disappointed with the graphics, but the gameplay was there. The collision detection can probably be tweaked as well, but overall I really like playing this. I'm a bit spoiled now having the sequel for the 7800 and having one of those TV-plug-in games with Pole Position on it. Track&Field I loved the arcade game. This is probably the reason I even run MAME on my desktop and I bought the XBOX 360 adaptation from their store. I can play this game for hours. The Atari version is awesome and one of these days I will treat myself to one of the special controllers (or build my own!). Enduro I just played this the other day after perhaps two or three years, and was able to almost finish the game. I was about 30 cars short! Probably the best I have ever done. I just love playing this game, unlike Pole Position you actually have the button act as the accelerator, which gives you great control. The time of day, the snow track, this is so well done. As always Activision gets the balance perfectly right. Realsports Boxing This is another game I bought in 1990 or so, probably at Consumers in Waterloo. I think I must have been going through a phase where I was following Boxing, so I ended up getting this. I always thought that the controls were great and the ability to run around the ring was excellent. Unlike the Title Match Pro Wrestling, you don't have to memorize a crazy amount of moves, so the playability is totally there. Tennis This is a perfect example of simplicity and excellent gameplay in a sports game. Where many games overcomplicate things by trying to be a simulation rather than a fungame , Tennis kept the formula nice and simple. The graphics and the few sounds are quite basic. Where this game shines is in its playability especially against another human opponent. It's basically a 2D version of Pong, but as such it works really well. The ball bounces nicely, you can hit the ball at angles and even the computer can be challenging. The only problem with such a nice formula, the play can get formulaic. You can reach your best skill level very quickly and then you plateau. It is a fun game to kill some time. California Games I actually had California Games on my C64 before I bought the actual Atari version at ToysRUs back in the day. It has a lot of great events, I especially enjoy the footbag (hacky sack) and BMX events. It is missing a couple of events (frisbee and rollerskating) that some of the other platforms have. It's a clean version, very playable and shows some great music can also be played on the VCS. The surfing event is a bit of a throw-away since it's a tricky one to master, while the half-pipe runs hot and cold for me. It's especially fun when you are playing with one or more other players. Realsports Baseball There are a few baseball games out on the Atari that do a good job, and while I'm not a die-hard baseball fan by any means, I do like to play the game and I like to play it on the Atari. Overall the game that hits the spot for me is the Realsports edition from Atari. The screen layout and the control scheme works well, and while in some regards may be not as slick as Super Baseball and certainly not like Pete Rose Baseball, it's the one I get into fairly quickly and play a few innings. Winter Games This is fairly good port of the original computer series. I also remember buying this game originally in 89 and having blast playing. Ski Jump and bobsledding/luge are my favourite events in this game and I can play them over and over again. The other events have their charm (the biathlon is cleverly done) and the control scheme is pretty tight, which makes it pretty fun to play.
  10. Hey guys, I'm back with the new project (M.U.S.H.A. Remastered was the first one and it was so much fun) and this time it's BEASTBALL an unreleased game for Sega Genesis. STORY Brutal does not come close to describing the level of Carnage you will face in the trials ahead. Beastball takes football to the next level of brutality. Slay, bash, and Maine your way through the entire championship. Start off with the Brave and Bold Vikings and move your way up do different mutations and races to become more Savage and dominate the playing field. Beastball was originally scheduled to be released at the end of the Sega Genesis™ lifespan(1993-94) But ultimately was never released. It was going to be the first of many games in a planned “Brutal Sports” line by Spectrum Holobyte™. The game was published on the Amiga, Atari Jaguar and MS-DOS™ as Brutal Sports Football (Crazy Football in Germany). Most likely the SNES and Genesis versions were cancelled when Microprose™ purchased Spectrum Holobyte™ in 1993. The game was developed by Millennium Interactive™, a company best known for their James Pond series, and Teque Software. In 2011 MrMark0673 released the ROM image of the unreleased Sega Genesis™ version of the game. The Finished Prototype was originally owned by DreamTR. Maybe someday a SNES version will come out as well? ¹ Here at REGaming we’ve decided to take this classic game again and redesign it for a new age. One in which true retro gamers can indulge in their need to collect all the classics from which they can. CROWDFUNDING We will be making this game as soon as we receive at least 35 backers. If we do not reach our goal of 35 purchases of the game in 21 days. Then all money will be refunded and we will move on to the next project. As we put a lot of care and effort into this product we certainly look forward to see how many people want to partake in this game.
