DEFENDER III Edit: 8/17/23 Added support for Defender III to the Commodore 64 Atari 2600 Emulator, see this post for details. Commodore 64 prgs: defenderiii.prg defender3trainer.prg Basic Gameplay: Protect Martian Cities from fallling Meteors by blasting them out of the sky! Meteor impact slowly destroys the cities of Mars - your ship is equipped with audial Radar which allows you to hear off screen meteor impacts; reach them fast enough and you can stop the meteors in mid-destruction! Restore health to damaged Cities by catching falling score power-ups. To complete the wave and defend a new City, you must destroy at least 10 meteors before either your Ship or the City are destroyed. Shields: The impact from any of the baddies will damage your Ion shields to varying degrees with spectacular plasma color effects (not in the Beta yet) - take on too much damage and your shields are eventually destroyed completely; sustain a hit without sheilds and the game is over. When you save a City, your Ion shields are fully recharged. Defender III Weapons: All Defender games have different weapons - in Defender you had a colorful laser burst while Defender II sported more precise particle beam weapons. In Defender III, you've got an unlimited supply of remote control Drones, which control a bit differently than laser bursts or particle beams: Until a Drone goes offscreen and out of range you'll have full control over it - you can even make the Drones do loop-de-loops and figure eights which comes in handy for clipping the high speed meteors. It can take awhile to get used to not being able to fire another shot after you miss a target because your Drone is still airborne - this Defender plays different Game Characters: Meteors Enemy landers heat seeking pods Surface to air missiles Buildings Score power-ups Defender Ship Remote control Drones Console compatibility: Beta 5 currently plays on all Atari consoles including the Flashback Portable though the pre-production version is as of yet untested (someone please test on a pre-production unit!) Defender III does not work in Stella yet, at least not in my version - a scrolling mosaic appears at the start instead of the ship being in outer space, and the mosaic permeates the cityscape once the game starts making it unplayable. I will find a workaround for this as development continues; Defender III was programmmed in Flashback BASIC which is also in Beta. I'll post new versions of the game as development progresses, hope everyone enjoys! DefenderIII_Beta5.bin Edit: 3/2017: Defender III and Defender III Trainer ROM's below! Changes: Harder to clear a level, you must destroy 15 meteors! Unique bonus round challenge levels - a playable title screen level and a playable game over level showing waves completed. You'll need a light touch to play these levels without starting a new game. Defender_III_Trainer_v1.binDefender_III_v1.bin

Stargate is the sequel to Defender and on the 2600 utilizes both controllers. The left controller is used to maneuver and shoot while the right is for smart bombs, hyperspace, and invisibility. Kind of tough using both controllers but the game looks and sounds awesome.

Some of my favorite 2 joystick games for the 2600 include Stargate, Spy Hunter, Solaris, and Radar Lock. Over the course of time I've tried various joysticks out on these games to see if I could get superior control one way or the other. Really the best option happens to be putting a table in front of me with a pair of suction cups joysticks attached, but hauling out a table for that purpose is kinda a hassle. There are trays for the 2600 CX-40 joysticks to be placed in for 2 joystick gaming, but I've never managed to add one of these to my collection... So, I have a new idea to share here, and it h has to do with using an 8bitdo Retro Receiver for the Genesis along with a wireless pair of Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons. Check out what I've managed to accomplish:

Eugene Jarvis - Atari - Podcast Interview - Creator of Defender, Robotron & Stargate This is probably my favourite interview to date as I have a long and in-depth chat with arcade, Atari and Williams legend Eugene Jarvis. Eugene shares some great stories of working at Atari, what it was like working with Nolan Bushnell, creating Defender and Stargate. He also talks what inspired him to make Robotron: 2084, Smash T.V. and loads more. He also looks at his current work at Raw Thrills where he keeping arcades alive with amazing innovations. He also talks about his views on the Jeff Minter's Defender 2000 on the Jaguar. The 1 hour 30 mins chat with Arcade Attack is honest, funny and really insightful. I would be so honoured if you checked it out and shared your feedback. Just wanted to pass on a little info today on how to use the X-Arcade Tankstick on your 2600. You can use three adapters: 1) The X-Arcade 5-in-1 adapter converts the Tankstick PC capability over to Playstation 1/2, Gamecube (Wii), and Dreamcast consoles. It's around $30 shipped. Use the Playstation plug-in on the left. 2) Tototek's $25 Playstation to Sega Genesis controller adapter. 3) Best Electronics Sega Genesis to Atari Systems Adapter Cable ($12) If you wish to play the dual joystick Atari 2600 games with both joysticks on the Tankstick, you can buy a total of 4 adapters to get it working: 1) X-Arcade 5-in-1 adapter (both Playstation plug-ins are utilized) 2) Tototek Playstation to Sega Genesis controller adapter (goes to the left controller port along with the Best Electronics cable) 3) Another Tototek Playstation to Sega Genesis controller adapter (goes to the right controller port) 4) Best Electronics Sega Genesis to Atari Systems Adapter Cable (goes to the left port) I made a new discovery: For some reason you don't need a second Best Electronics cable on the right controller port to get the job done right- just one on the left port. This also applies to the Atari 7800 when playing Robotron with the Tankstick and adapters. Dual joystick Atari 2600 games include the following titles: Defender II (same as Stargate), Radar Lock, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Riddle of the Sphynx, Spy Hunter, Solaris, and Video Life. I do not own the Kipper2k PSX Joystick adapter (Playstation to Atari adapter), so I have not tested it to see if it works with the Tankstick along with the 5-in-1 adapter. I have heard that it does work, though, and if that's true you can eliminate the purchase of the Best Electronics cable. It may be truly the best way to go because it offers some programmability of the Playstation controller buttons. It is $23 plus the cost of shipping. Here's my recent presentation on using the Tankstick on the 2600 (and 7800) along with some gameplay:

Hey Everyone -- So I've been playing a lot of Defender II (Stargate), and like some other people, I just can't get 100% comfy with the 2-joystick controls. I know I could buy a foot controller or something, but I really feel like it would be just about perfect if the 2nd controller utilized the Video Touch Pad or Keyboard/Kids Controller instead of the joystick. I've looked and seen a number of other people asking something similar. But no definitive answers. I don't think a hack like this already exists or I would probably have found it around here somewhere. So I guess it's more of a matter of "Is it POSSIBLE, from a programming standpoint, to hack Stargate/Defender II to use the Video Touch Pad as the second controller?" I suppose that a "yes" eventually would lead to "Has anyone worked on it?"/"Can someone do it?"/"What would it take?" questions in my mind. It's easier to hunt something if you know it exists. But if it's a moot point anyway... I'm just wondering if I should bother holding out hope that one day I'll have my optimal version of one of my favorite 2600 games. Anyone?
