  1. More Atari focused but all flavours welcome. We had an working ST Book and ATW to see last time Lots of modded machines too. See Exxos' forum for more details and chit chat on the above.
  2. Hi there all, I'm new to this community as I've just got myself an Atari Jaguar so what normal thing do you do first is look for active communites and forums. I am from the UK and looking to chat with fellow Jaguar owners and maybe look at starting up/restoring the UK Jagfest scene whether that be just meeting up once a year to discuss the latest homebrew/ports or just share memories or go head to head on games such as Doom etc in a LAN style event. Already liking the look for the site and glad UK shipping on the carts in store is due to re-open. Regards James
  3. Dear Atari fellow, I wonder in what form the 1985 special packs were sold in the UK. On 16 February 1985 PCN announced that packs would be available in the UK, to clear the warehouses before the arrival of the 130XE. On 27 April 1985, Silica Shop offered 3 different packs. (see details below) The question is: what did these packs look like? Was it just a promotion, the components of the packs were just sold as normal, but with a discount? Were they put together in a special box (like the "Dixon exclusive" packs later with the 65XE)? Was there a special box, bag, packaging? I ask this question to complete the Atari 8-bit FAQ. I know there were other packs, later, or in other countries. I'm specifically trying to get some information about the 1985 UK packs... On 16-Feb-1985, an article in Personal Computer News reads: "Depreciation seems to start work on the 800XL before it even crosses the counter. The machine's price was virtually halved by Christmas last year, and two packages due to be put together this month effectively bring it down again. Its price at the moment is 129 GBP. The first package will give you an 800XL, 1050 disk drive, Home Filing Manager and a disk-based adventure for 249.99 GBP. The second puts together the 800XL, a 1010 recorder and Pole position for 129.99 GBP. [...] If dealers start to split these packages [...]" On 27-Apr-1985, a full page ad of "Silica Shop" - one of the largest Atari reseller in the UK - lists: Atari 600XL entertainment pack 600XL + Donkey Kong (cart) + Qix (cart) + CX40 = 69 GBP Atari 800XL and recorder pack 800XL + 1010 + Pole position & demo program (assumption: cassette TX8034, "Pole position" & "Atari graphics demonstration") + Invitation to prg #1 = 129 GBP Atari 800XL and disk drive pack 800XL + 1050 + Home filing manager (diskette) + The payoff (diskette) & demo program (diskette) = 269 GBP Thanks in advance for your contributions.
  4. Morning all, poster from Ireland here, TLDR version: I am utterly clueless when it comes to AV hook-ups for the original Odyssey (and also when it comes power networking more generally). Would really appreciate if someone could review my Youtube/Wikipedia research, so I don't destroy a vintage console. The Console: I have an original Magnavox Odyssey (1972) that I picked up from another guy living in Ireland. I don't know much about Magnavox's distribution history (was the idea of PAL consoles even a thing back in 1972? ) but I'm assuming it's a standard NTSC unit that was imported, as there's a sticker on the bottom saying 120V/60Hz. The guy I bought it from just had it out on display, so there's no game power cord or antenna game switch with it, and I'm just trying to figure out what my best options are to power it on (without wearing out the battery compartment), and connecting it to a CRT. Power (Problem): In Ireland, we run the UK-style "Type G" electrical sockets, that output a standard supply of 230 volts AC (frequency 50Hz). I do have a step-down transformer but would prefer not to use it if possible, as it heats up very quickly. So I guess what I'm looking for is a) a modern power supply that can accept an input range of 100-240V, 50/60 HZ), b) that's well suited to the MA1 console, and c) that has those Irish/UK style pins. Like I said, I don't have one of the original power supplies that Magnavox manufactured for the Odyssey (I have been waiting for a few months for one to pop up on eBay with no joy...), but in an earlier thread linked below, @Clong80 notes that the specs on the original power supply are: INPUT 117 VAC 50/60HZ OUTPUT 9 volts 400ma 3.5mm mono headphone jack Tip positive for polarity Power (Solution?) So after a bit of online browsing, I found this website that sells modern power supply adapters for the Atari 2600. The specs on this unit are: 9V DC 1A Tip: 3.5mm jack (Centre tip positive) https://www.retrosales.com.au/collections/atari-power/products/accessory-power-supply-atari-2600-power-supply-adaptor-pack-9v So that will supply more current than the console needs; I know these numbers don't need to match exactly, but is the difference (9V, 1A vs 9V, 400ma) reasonable enough? I'd also need a standard travel adapter to convert the Australian plug to UK pin-style. Found this unit on Amazon ("This Adapter does not convert Voltage. Please make sure your device supports 220-240 Voltage.") Per Jakob Schuler on YouTube, it looks like the Magnavox Odyssey needs a 2.5mm tip (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzXlJSa_VP4&t=6m22s), so I found this 3.5mm-to-2.5mm adapter on Amazon AV Hookup: I don't have one of the original antenna game switches with the hanging hooks, but my CRT doesn't accept NTSC RF anyway, so I don't think that would be the best option for me. However, it will accept NTSC through the composite ports. And I have an NTSC RF-to-composite conversion box, which works great either on its own or with composite switches. I've had no luck finding an original MA1 video cable like this one https://atariage.com/forums/uploads/monthly_06_2016/post-32949-0-81329000-1466475134.jpg On the TV end, the little RF adapters are obviously no problem to get from Amazon, but I understand that the other end which connects to the console is proprietary? (I'm not 100% sure about this). End of an entirely-too-long post Would be super grateful if anyone could advise me on 1) whether I've made any huge screw-ups in my choice of power accessories, and 2) how to find a video cable that will connect to the console Many thanks if you stuck through to the end of this post
  5. Picked up a Polyvox Vader today in a bundle with some Brazilian games. It has a hard wired power lead and a switch on the base between 110v 220v. The closest I have to this is a 115v 230v. I guess the extra 5-10v isn't going to hurt it that much (but it is weird to hear an Atari buzz) I've tried tuning it in but I get wavy blue lines on the screen and no sound. I've read that they use PAL-M which is a format my HDTV doesn't have. The systems my TV can tune are [B/G] [D/K] [L] it works best on [B/G] My HDTV has colour modes for [PAL] [SECAM] [NTSC 4.43] [NTSC 3.58] but none of the work you have to let it tune on [AUTO] This is staying firmly in my collection but I was wondering if anyone else in the UK has had better results.
  6. I got my hands on not one but two UK 520 STe machines. Last night I opened both of them to examine the motherboard. They are both dirty, one much more than the other. Both seem to be early STe models with separate Blitter chips (vs. integrated with the glue logic IC) and both have the factory installed fix for sound. I also see the "bad" DMA chip in both units as well. Then the differences begin. The cleaner board has four SIMMs (2 of 1 kind, 2 of another kind) where the dirtier board only has two SIMMS. I also see the cleaner board has 28-pin ROMs and the dirtier board has 32-pin ROMs. If I had to guess the TOS version then I would say the 28-pin is 1.06. The 32-pin version is labeled 1.6. The 32-pin ROMs are actual EPROM devices with windows vs OTP device. I haven't powered up either board. My new power supply should arrive this Thursday. While I wait for the power supply to arrive I will try cleaning the motherboard with a soft toothbrush and some alcohol, >90%. Assuming they both fire up and work properly I'd like to install 4 MB of memory and a UK version of TOS 1.62 in both. Maybe these machines will have the improved TOS from ParanoidLIttleMan here. My 1040 STe has a standard US version of TOS 2.06. Since both have the "bad" DMA chip I would like to try installing NetUSBee with a USB flash drive instead of using UltraSatan. I don't know if the floppy drives in either system work. The drive in the dirtier system looks like a solid brick of rust and corrosion. It's a Mitsumi unit. Maybe it still works. erhaps I can get a solid state floppy emulator/replacement if it doesn't. The cleaner system has a Sony unit and looks unexceptional. See the attachments in this message. I hope the images aren't scaled down and compressed too much by the forum system. I plan to update this thread with my progress on getting these machines up and running.
  7. Request: I would very much like to get my old Atari 2600 hooked up to a modern TV to see if it still works and test the range of game cartridges that I have. I have been doing some hunting on the internet and seen various postings that make it look like this goal is possible. Unfortunately I've missed finding the right UK based solution, or more possibly am missing the relevant knowledge to get the posted solutions to work. It sounds like using an old VHS video recorder can help simplify the process. So can you please help understand, in simple terms , how to connect my old Atari 2600 up to a modern TV... Many thanks! Kit List: Atari 2600 Wooden Panel - Model No. CX-2600 P This unit has a Channel Select Switch on its base (A/B) I think this switches between Channels 2 & 3 This Atari 2600 Unit was purchased new in Germany quite a few years ago It has an RCA (I think) cable hardwired into the unit This unit has never had a switch box like I have seen mentioned for some console models on this forum A bunch of original Atari game cartridges that were all bought new in Germany Sony SLV-SE810G VHS Recorder This VHS Recorder was purchased new in the UK A modern TV in the shape of a Panasonic TX-37LZD800 As of yet I have not been able to find out how to tune an analogue channel on this TV to channel 2 or 3 in the VHF band Would I need to be able to tune the TV to channel 2 or 3 if I use the VHS Recorder as a bridge between the modern TV and my Atari 2600? A couple of pictures to hopefully help:
  8. Revival was at the weekend here in the UK and I set up 5 Vectrexes on the stand and showed my 2 games plus a host of other games from other home brew luminaries... a few photos of the Vectrex stuff... 9. I have decided, to reduce the number of adaptors I need, to buy an NTSC tv for NTSC consoles. I have a question though, would I need to buy a transformer? What is the difference between US and UK voltage? Thank you for any help.
  10. Hi All, My latest work adding disk support to the UnoCart (link) has given me a the urge to get hold of a real disk drive! Sadly I sold my own many years ago, I think when I upgraded my 8-bit to an ST. Does anyone in the UK have a 1050 going spare? (ideally, with power supply, SIO cable and in a working, decent condition ). In exchange I could offer an Ultimate Cart (in a 3d printed shell) since I have one spare that I built earlier in the year, but never got round to selling. Or possibly, an UnoCart, if that would be prefered. Robin
  11. Announcing "the Greatest Entertainment System since Television Itself"... Does anyone know if there were any other numbers of this particular Fan Club UK Newsletter? Cheers, Oscar
  12. hi peeps, does anybody repair atari 1050 drives in the uk? thanks in advance
  13. 1st up hi from the UK guys !! Absolute newb so be gentle, hopefully Ill be able to pic the correct spots to post but let me know if there's somewhere more appropriate. Anyhoo...........Im an old geezer from back in the day,old enough to remember waiting excitedly for new releases for the Intv heh heh -NOT that I ever had the money to buy them but in common with most others now Im older I can behave like a spoilt brat and buy back my youth and the games we all dreamed of. Hopefully Ill be able to chip in now + again but my knowledge pales next to the Yodas that inhabit these forums.Being UK based Im a little limited for sourcing rarities but stuff does pop up now and again.Ive amassed a decent collection I think with most of the rarities barring the new homebrews I read jealously about !!! I will get round to getting some pics on soon but just wanted to tap the amassed knowledge here if I could. - To that end - I just bought a whole collection (to get a couple of rarities and more truthfully to stop it going to eBay!!!!) and amid my (wife calls it my ADHD) excited flicking round testing games I popped in a Defender cart and up pops Pac-Man . Not sure if its a Doh! or Woohoo! moment as I remember people back in the day scamming the likes of Blockbuster etc by swapping game boards round in rentals before attempting to get a mate who worked there to book 'em back in!!!! I asked the chap I bought them from and he was very apologetic. He apparently worked for Mattel in the UK in the 70's and 80's (and is retiring for some Island life hence getting shot of the loft contents) He said he'd taken it home for his kids back then as it was returned as faulty, having the wrong game board. He sounded legit and even offered a refund for the error.Having had a good buy I politely thanked him for the info and no need for the refund but Im at a loss as to the legitimacy of the item. Previous history tells me opening carts without damaging them is pretty iffy-Im not even going into my experiences, thankfully it was only cheapies !!! Anyway, the cart's pretty much without a mark on the plastic,no stresses or screwdriver marks so Im just wondering if this is something anyone's heard of? Is it something I should keep or just a shame for the old Defender cart? Just the 1st time Ive come across this so thought Id ask!
  14. A new retro event is being started up at Wolverhampton Racecourse in May this year. I've just bought a weekend ticket for £20. It will be very much retro compared to that of the other UK events. http://www.revivalretroevents.com/ Anyone fancy going?

  16. As you may have seen on the latest update to the XM status page I'll be demoing the XM and games at the Replay Expo 2011 held in Blackpool in the UK on the weekend of the 5th/6th of November. The XM mandatory games will be Apple Snaffle, Halloween, Monster! and Fruitarian. Unfortunately Dungeon! won't be demoed because its custom cart hardware won't be ready in time and the game isn't CC2 compatible. There may also be a further two unannounced XM mandatory mystery games. However, these are optional at the moment and depend on the amount of development time required to get them into a reasonable state before the show. The XM and its games will be on the Oldschool Gaming homebrew stand organised by TMR. If any other 7800/2600 coders have PAL versions of their homebrew games they'd like to demo let me know. I'll be updating this thread with more information as we get closer to the show.
  17. Hi, I was hoping that someone might have 2600 'Vader' for sale in the UK. Preferably one with original power supply, rf lead and a least one joystick. But would be happy with just a working console (I have 3rd party leads and joystick I use with my 6-switch woody and Jr.). Cheers, Lewis
