A couple of months ago I decided to have a crack at writing a new BIOS for Ultimate 1MB from scratch. Its purpose was simply to facilitate a bootable version of the WIP Graphical OS in ROM and add some extra PBI BIOS options, but the project quickly ran away with itself and became an exercise in completely re-thinking just about every part of the functionality. The new BIOS offers: The ability to set the date and time from the setup menu Dual configuration profiles Categorized menus covering system settings, hard disk, device setup, etc Turbo-Freezer compatibility Customisable shortcut keys OS-independent Ultra-speed SIO for serial disk drives Optional BIOS logo screen and boot device selection menu Optional flash write protection System information page displaying CPU type, audio/video hardware, etc BIOS Plugin API for diverse hardware control (Ultimate 1MB only) Variable SpartaDOS X ROM sizes (192, 256 and 320KB), and the ability to boot the WIP Graphical OS (when 192KB SDX is used) So this is a beta version of the new (alt) Ultimate BIOS, provided with a new (beta) version of uFlash which is designed to handle both original and new BIOS versions (and the upgrade process), a (required) PBI BIOS update, and some documentation. I've also thrown in a complete Ultimate 1MB ROM with the GOS intended for testing in Altirra (or on a real machine if you're feeling brave). Ultimate BIOS Beta 0.24 Release.zip You'll notice the word 'beta' crops up a lot. This is BETA software, so please ensure you have a means of recovery in the event something goes wrong with the BIOS flash, or something unexpected goes wrong with the BIOS. Although the last couple of builds have been well tested, it's a BIOS and is therefore critical to whether your machine boots up or not. I can't stress this enough, and I do not want to hear people complaining about bricking their machines and having no way to recover. A USB flash ROM programmer is an absolute must if you want to test this on real hardware. The sensible procedure is to back up your entire Ultimate 1MB ROM first so that you can go back to it if you need to or if you simply don't like what you end up with. You can do this in-situ with uFlash or with your USB programmer. The (draft) documentation outlines the upgrade procedure, and you must upgrade both the main BIOS and the PBI BIOS both at once. That means load up uFlash, flash BIOS24.ROM to the "BIOS" slot and ULTPBI13.ROM to the "PBI BIOS" slot. Then do a power-cycle. The NVRAM configuration data of the original BIOS is completely incompatible with the new one, so although your system clock should remain valid, nothing else will. You'll be prompted to set things up again after the upgrade. The defaults chosen (i.e. stock RAM) will be subject to change in the final version, as will anything else I feel like changing, although the OS ROM, BASIC and XEGS slot descriptions (which should survive the upgrade) won't change position again. Things that don't work or only work partially or don't work at all: Boot device menu: works, but isn't finished "Redirect D1:" in the PBI BIOS menu is not implemented yet Other stuff This became such a gargantuan task that I just want to leave the beta out for a week or two and do other things to get over it, before fixing what needs fixed and getting on with the new (alt) XEX loader, which is about half done but will take a while to complete. Lastly, I want to offer massive thanks to Phaeron, Hias and Prowizard. The assistance they have provided in terms of testing, ideas, and technical insight was really fantastic, and without them, some of the neat features present just wouldn't exist at all. And had Hias not kindly agreed to let me use his High-Speed SIO code in the PBI BIOS (more or less verbatim), there'd be no High-Speed SIO. Thanks also to MrFish for valuable feedback and ideas on the UI, and of course to Candle himself for the hardware and original firmware. The sole purpose of this new, alternative BIOS is to get even more functionality from this fantastic hardware, taking inspiration from his initial achievements. I've probably forgotten stuff, but it's late, so - enjoy. PS: Incognito BIOS to follow shortly.

I'm pleased to announce the release of the version 4.0 firmware update for U1MB, Incognito, SIDE2, SIDE3, 1088XEL, and 1088XLD. The update includes a redesigned SIDE loader, and completely redesigned BIOS plugins with support for SIDE3, Sophia 2, and PokeyMAX. Also newly introduced is support for an NTSC colour palette in VBXE (loaded transparently when the machine is turned on). User documentation has also been comprehensively updated, with sections covering the new SIDE3 loader and Incognito. Most excitingly, Incognito is now capable of supporting firmware plugins, subject to release of a CPLD JED update which I have been testing for Candle. The SIDE3 loader is now capable of native PDM (FujiConvert) playback as well (see the manual for discussion of all new features). https://atari8.co.uk/ultimate-1mb-firmware-update-4-0-released/ Since I spent the entirety of Saturday preparing and uploading all this stuff (after spending the previous day moving my website and work emails), I'll forego further disucssion for the moment, and hopefully answer any questions as we go on. I will probably make a video showing a topical overview of what's been released as well. All ROMs inlclude the newly released SpartaDOS X 4.49e; I thought we might as well get in sync with the SIDE3 ROM, which uses this version by default. Meanwhile, SpartaDOS 3.x, Bewe-DOS and RealDOS users can find RTC drivers for U1MB and SIDE3 on the APT toolkit disk. I would not be surprised if I screwed something up while preparing the files here, so if anything looks anomalous, please let me know. Likewise, please use this thread to discuss any installation or usability issues. The menus in the setup menu and loader are quite different now (many controls are 'modal' to facilitate interactive facilities via callbacks), but this actually makes things like setting the clock quite a bit easier. Feedback from testers of pre-release versions (indeed, some variation of this firmware has found its way onto all U1MB and Incognito machines which have been through my hands these past few months) has been positive, so hopefully the only work that remains to do will involve minor bug fixes. Meanwhile, now that this update is released, I hope to focus on ambitious new features in the SIDE3 loader, such as FAT write capability, more media playback support, and auto-mounting media. Update (060621) Thanks to Doug_in_NC on Discord for immediately spotting that I'd broken joystick trigger handling in main BIOS 4.02 for U1MB and Incognito. Fixed in 4.03, so please head over to the firmware section and update (U1MB/1088 users may update the 'FIRMWARE.ROM' file, and Incognito users need flash only 'IBIOS.ROM'). Blog post: https://atari8.co.uk/u1mb-and-incognito-firmware-4-0-bug-fix/ The 'complete' ROM images also have the update (disregard file creation date). SIDE3 Loader Update (230621) For those who already updated their SIDE3 loader or are yet to do so, please be sure to download version 0.40, which fixes MegaCart, Sic! and AtariMax 1Mbit/8Mbit emulation bugs. https://atari8.co.uk/firmware/side3/ Update (070721) Blog post: https://atari8.co.uk/u1mb-incognito-1088xel-and-1088xld-firmware-update/

Following several months of development and testing and one year after the prior update (version 2), I'm pleased to announce the release of version 3.00 of the 'alt' firmware for the Ultimate 1MB, Incognito, 1088XEL/XLD, and SIDE/SIDE2. Please head over to the firmware page of my website to download the updates: https://atari8.co.uk/firmware/ New features: Number of BIOS configuration profiles increased from three to four Massively faster and more powerful loader search facility Loader’s built-in FAT DOS now supports subdirectories Loader now remembers the last accessed FAT folder Loader scripts may include paths Loader can now open the location of any already mounted image Usability improvements to the loader and BIOS setup menu Optional synthetic ‘IO sound’ with ATRs and hard disk partitions Improved loader compatibility Auto-booting banked cartridge conversions on SIDE/SIDE2 All hardware-specific HDD functionality moved to plugins Several important bug fixes This thread will cover any installation and usability issues, and discussion of any further updates and fixes. Documentation has also been heavily revised, and we have the exciting prospect of ebiguy's excellent OSS language cart conversions for SIDE/SIDE2. I will be making some quick-start videos when I get time; for now the task of simply getting everything prepared and uploaded was daunting enough. Thanks to the volunteers who tested the beta and release candidate versions, and I hope everyone enjoys the end result.

Friday rainy day project = Fit Ultimate 1MB into my 65XE Remake. Not being happy with the pillar style of mounting the U1MB and that I was only able to find a mounting bracket for the 800XL ( Jeff Thiele Design ), using this as a basis I designed one specifically for the XE models. Like the 800XL version, it only uses the one PCB mount screw to hold it in place, it also has a very small bump to locate it into the RF sheild PCB through hole and to hold it square. Being offset means you can still unscrew it from the main XE PCB with out having to unmount the U1MB from the Mount. I have uploaded the STL to Thingiverse for those wanting to print their own. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6009020 Enjoy

Hello - I'm sure I cannot be the first to encouter this, but I cannot find anybody writting it up, not can I find a solution. I have a setup that works perfectly fine on actual hardware where I have a 130XE, U1MB, and a Side3 cart. On the SD card I have hard drive partitions, including a SpartaDOS 3 partition. With this configuration I can boot to SD3 on that partition and everything works swimingly. However, I have tried to replicate the configuration using Altirra and the SpartaDOS 3 partition will not boot. It does not tell me "NO DOS" or "BOOT ERROR", it goes directly into the internal self test menu. I can access all of the partitions on the SD card using SpartaDOS X on the U1MB. I have the latest firmwares on all devices, both in actual hardware, and in Altirra. I have also made an image of the physical SD card to use in Altirra, so I am certain that the card itself is not the issue. Has anybody else been able to boot a SpartaDOS 3 partition from a Side3 cart within Altirra? If so, how did you get that to work?

I bought an 800XL from ebay which was advertised as having a Sophia Rev C installed and a SIDE 2 cartridge. It turned out to also have an Ultimate 1MB board installed. Anyway, as a newbie to the Atari 8 bit world, I am struggling to work out how to get the SIDE 2 cartridge to behave. The Sophia board works like a charm, and the Ultimate 1MB appears to function, at least to some extent. It has SpartadosX 4.46 and Ultimate BIOS 1.02 from 2016 by FJC. I am stumbling over which settings I need to have on the U1MB and SIDE2 so I can FDISK a CF card. The system came with a Sandisk 8GB card that had been wiped, and as yet I am unable to run FDISK on it. When I try FDISK all I get is a "138 Device does not respond" . In case the card is the issue, I have another 8GB Sandisk on order, but it hasn't arrived yet. If I boot with the card in and switch down, then the LED on the SIDE 2 does not illuminate and the display is just a cursor square on the top left corner. If I boot without the card inserted. the LED illuminates and the bootup screen comes on, which suggests the CF card is at least part of the issue. What settings to I need set on U1MB and what else do I need to do to get this to work other than a new CF card? Current settings: Extended RAM: 1088KB RAMBO System: Stock XL BASIC Slot: BASIC XEGS slot : Grayed out and Disabled SpartaDOS X : Enabled Graphical OS : Grayed Out and Disabled Boot to loader : Disabled VBXE, Soundboard, Stereo Pokey : grayed out and disabled COVOX : Disabled PBI BIOS : Enabled PBI Device ID : 0 Hard Disk : Enabled ATR swap button : Enabled Boot Partition : D1 HDD Write Lock : Disabled Drive 1 swap : Disabled High-speed SIO : Disabled

I'm pleased to announce the release of firmware version 3.02 for the Ultimate 1MB, Incognito, 1088XEL/XLD and SIDE/SIDE2. Since the update's primary purpose is to correct issues present in the version 3.00 and earlier released, it is highly recommended for all users. Please head over to the firmware page of my website to download the updates: https://atari8.co.uk/firmware/ New Features (over version 2.01) Include: Number of BIOS configuration profiles increased from three to four Massively faster and more powerful loader search facility Loader’s built-in FAT DOS now supports subdirectories Loader now remembers the last accessed FAT folder Loader scripts may include paths Loader can now open the location of any already mounted image Usability improvements to the loader and BIOS setup menu Optional synthetic ‘IO sound’ with ATRs and hard disk partitions Improved loader compatibility Auto-booting banked cartridge conversions on SIDE/SIDE2 Bug Fixes For users who previously updated to version 3.00 in July, the following fixes/changes have been implemented: Loader Fixed: Unnamed FAT entries missing from partition list Fixed: Selected entry not consistently tracked during search Fixed: SIDE2 displayed as 'SIDE1' in stand-alone loader's device menu Fixed: Logged directory cluster number corrupted after MAP file processing Changed: Boot drive override (to D1:) now issued on restart if a disk image exists on drive 1 (instead of immediately after mount operation) Changed: No boot drive override issued when 'Boot SpartaDOS X' is selected (allows easy booting from CONFIG.SYS drive after mounting ATRs) BIOS Changed: message and menu item wording Changed: progress bar code rewritten for brevity Added: L+RESET starts loader if SELECT+RESET coldstart hotkey is enabled PBI BIOS Fixed: SIO status command now reliably returns enhanced density bit in first byte (DVSTAT) for 130K ATRs Fixed: Dummy format command now returns error if enhanced density format attempted on single density (90K) ATR Changed: Boot drive override clears after first use Changed: SIO status command for device $20 now returns complement of controller error register in second byte (as per device $3x) Feedback If anyone notices any screw-ups, please let me know directly or via this thread. I sat on this update for several days purely because changing just one byte of code in the firmware necessitates the complete re-assembly of a many ROMs and ATR images, which is repetitive and even excruciating process, especially when one notices a bug while demoing the software on video. As usual: please use this thread to report your experiences, both positive and otherwise. Videos As mentioned above, I've made a couple of videos which attempt to demonstrate some of the more useful features of the SIDE Loader, both stand-alone and when used in conjunction with Ultimate 1MB. The same methodologies apply by and large to Incognito and the 1088XEL/XLD. I'll be making more of these videos, since there's still more to cover regarding advanced usage.

This doesn't really fit anywhere else, since several hard disk interfaces are using APT these days, so I'm giving it its own topic. Following some helpful suggestions regarding the APT Partition Editor (FDISK: thanks Marius and others), I've been doing some significant revisions on that program, aimed both improving usability, and paving the way for some cool future enhancements to the way we move data around. While looking for inspiration for the new FDISK's UI improvements, I found myself (re)reading DrCoolZic's excellent UltraSatan manual, and noticed something I hadn't seen before: namely where he talks (in Chapter 4) about a driver which allows the use of partitioned removable media in Windows. Now, Linux has always been able to do this (AFAIK), and GPARTED will partition CF and SD cards without issue. But while one may use third-party partitioning applications in Windows to partition removable media, Windows won't mount those partitions when you put the card in the reader. However, DrCoolZic's method appears to circumvent that problem, and I'm now able to use the Windows 7 Computer management console to partition CF cards. What's this got to do with APT? Well - maybe you want three FAT partitions on your SIDE CF card, as well as APT partitions that the Atari file system can see. FDISK doesn't provide an MBR partition editor: it just asks some simple questions about how you want to chop up the media between FAT and APT. And - while the new version of FDISK will be more flexible in this respect - it still won't provide a full-blown MBR partition editor. What it will do is allow you to tag an APT onto the end of a pre-partitioned card, or even assign an existing MBR partition entry as an APT area. Anyway - I've just started playing with these removable media drivers, but I thought I'd share. Here's the info: http://www.atari8.co...gRemovableMedia

Hi Everyone, I'm ~30 years late to the party but I finally bought my first Atari computer this week, the 800XL!! As a complete beginner to Atari and this whole scene I'm excited but also a little confused and would love some advice. The computer came with a 1010 Cassette deck (I've replaced the belts) and about 8 games on cassette - the computer and tape deck work fine but unfortunately none of the games load, I keep getting BOOT ERROR - so I haven't been been able to do anything on it yet The main purpose of this is for games, programming (basic and assembly) and the general fun of discovering what this thing can do. I have seen many great looking devices such as: sio2pc, sio2bt, sio2sd, Ultimate 1MB, Side2, Pokey Stereo Sound Where do I start, what should I get? importantly, who should I get these things from and what should I avoid? Please tell me which devices you have yourself, what you found the most and least useful and your recommendations. Thanks to everyone in advance - hopefully this post can help future noobs like me. All the best - I look forward to some good advice!

I'm trying to upgrade the firmware of an Ultimate 1MB card that came installed in an 800XL I just bought to the latest one by FlashJazzCat. I was following along with the video on pigwa, enabled spartados, rebooted into uflash, updated the bios, updated the spartados and rebooted again. Now when I reboot I just get this... I think this U1MB might be so old it still has v1 of the cpld code on it, the guy I bought it from had no idea. Have I bricked it? Can it be recovered? Help!

I am consolidating to a 600XL as my primary games machine. It is already upgraded to 64k and I'll be installing a UAV Rev D for graphics. I have a SDrive Nuxx as my primary image source. I am considering adding an Antonia 4MB, Ultimate 1MB, or APE Warp+ OS 32-in-1. Primary motivation is faster game loads. I have an APE Warp+ OS 32-in-1 in my 1200XL and like it but really only ever use the Warp+ OS. Still, I am leaning towards another since I am familiar with it and it is a little cheaper than the other two. I also like that it is all pre-loaded so I don't have to hunt down OS's and learn to flash them. Additional memory of the first two is nice, but not really a driving factor. I'm not really into demos plus I do have a RAM 320XL if needed. What would give me the fastest game loads? Any compelling advantages (based on the above) that I may not have considered? Is it possible to just get a ROM chip with a faster loading OS? Warp+ or equivalent on a ROM chip would pretty much be all I need. Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

Decided to give this its own topic, since it doesn't really have anything to do with APT (previous posts were in the APT Hard Disk Preparation and Utilities thread). Can't start it with a download quite yet (although there'll be a version to test in a day or two), but I wanted to demonstrate the basic procedure for editing the flash ROMs so people can hit the ground running when I post a version of the software for testing. The video shows a PBI ROM update, followed by BASIC slot 2 being replaced by the Atari Assembler Editor. You'll notice the slot descriptions can be edited and flashed to ROM at any time. I then replace the High-Speed OS with the 1200XL OS. Flashing is somewhat slower than it would be when using 4KB sector flash ROMs (Altirra only emulates 64KB sector chips for Ultimate), and of course it's also possible to load all ROM images from the hard disk (in the video, they're loaded from the host device via SIO). Don't really want to spend too long on this, so hopefully it'll be done shortly. I need to add 4KB sector and Incognito support before I have something ready for testing.

Please find a major update to the APT soft-drivers, PBI BIOSes, and partitioning and hard disk management tools here: http://atari8.co.uk/apt/ All drivers are updated, with brand new tools provided on customised SDX 4.46 builds and an APT Toolkit ATR if you prefer to run them from disk or with another DOS. Existing tools like FDISK have been heavily revised, while most other tools are brand new. The tools are: FDISK MATR APTDISK APTDEV ATRMNT MOUNT CHECKAPT UFLASH General documentation is provided in PDFs, while detailed coverage is included in text files on the toolkit ATR, which also includes all the soft-drivers and both PBI ROMs. SDX soft-drivers (pre-installed on custom SDX ROMs) are provided for the following hardware: MyIDE / MyIDE+Flash MyIDE 2 SIDE SIDE2 Colleen Most important, perhaps, are the major updates to the Ultimate 1MB and Incognito PBI BIOSes. These updates provide very greatly improved compatibility with SpartaDOS 3.x, MyDOS, RealDOS, as well as many, many ATR-based game titles and demos. Non-standard ATRs are now supported, and a raft of efficiency and stability improvements have been made. Several bugs have been fixed, and useful new enhancements implemented. See the BIOS changelog for details. I won't say too much more, since it's getting late and preparing these updates has taken almost a month of intensive work. I must express my thanks to AA member ProWizard for inspiring the recent frenzy of development and assisting me so ably and generously via testing and bug reports. Thanks also to Candle for his work on the latest SIDE loader and his provision for UFLASH support direct from FAT32. If you find bugs, experience issues or just discover broken links, etc, please let me know and I'll fix anything as soon as possible. There is such a lot of material here that I could hardly expect perfection, but at least I guarantee any problems will now be easy to rectify and probably caused by my own stupidity or tiredness. Ultimate and Incognito users my simply want to flash the PBI BIOS update and SDX 4.46 build and then read the manuals later on. PS: IDEa BIOS to follow... just ran out of time and steam tonight.

I'm on the verge of buying one of Lotharek's Ultimate 1MB upgrades and have a collection of machines I could (potentially) fit the board into. Question 1: Of the machines listed below, which would the Ultimate 1MB suit the best/give the most additional flexibility to? NTSC 1200XL, PAL 130XE, PAL 65XE, PAL 800XE, PAL 800XL or PAL 600XL (would need upgrading to 64K internally first). I'd like to think there'd be some benefit in fitting the Ultimate 1MB into the 1200XL which was recently fitted with a new keyboard; although It's already had an Atarimax APE WarpOS 32-in-1 upgrade fitted by a previous owner. Would the 32-in-1 upgrade clash with an Ultimate 1MB? Would I need to remove this first? I noticed from his YouTube videos, FlashJazzCat has a 1200XL which (IIRC) is fitted with Ultimate 1MB. Maybe some pointers from FJC? (being a UK resident like myself with an NTSC 1200XL) Question 2: I have 2 x SIDE cartridges (both v1). Apart from the benefits of hot-swapping, are there any other differences from version 2 which would stop me using my v1 SIDEs to full potential with the Ultimate 1MB? I don't want to spend extra to get a SIDE2 if the only benefit is hot-swapping. Are there other benefits to be had from a SIDE2 over SIDE1 when paired with the Ultimate 1MB?

From the album: Ultimate 1200XL
If you zoom in on this image you can see the five tapping points used to install the Ultimate 1MB. I have color coded my config as follows: PHI2 (pin 39) - white. RW (pin 36) - red RESET (pin 40) - yellow HALT (pin 35) - green A13 (pin 23) - black -
From the album: Ultimate 1200XL
I still need to decide how to fix the board permanently inside the case -
From the album: Ultimate 1200XL
Now the Ultimate 1MB board can be installed using the ROM and MMU adapters. On a 1200XL the ROM socket is U13 (U12 remains empty), and the MMU is U14. If all went well, the 1200XL should power up to the Ultimate Setup menu. -
From the album: Ultimate 1200XL
Jumper W6 is removed, and the black wire is added to connect to the top of W6 to Pin 23 (A13) of the CPU. Now that I am done soldering around the CPU I have placed the CPU back into socket U21. Note that in this picture I have also installed the Dropcheck Ultimate 1MB MMU adapter board. Later revisions of the Ultimate 1MB do not need this adapter. -
From the album: Ultimate 1200XL
In order for the Ultimate 1MB expansion to work with our new 28-pin ROM socket, jumpers W7, W8 and W9 need to be removed. Jumpers W11, W12 and W13 need to be installed. -
From the album: Ultimate 1200XL
The Ultimate 1MB is an "almost solderless" install. Four lines still need to be soldered, and they can all be taken from the CPU. On a 1200XL this is socket U21. The four lines needed are: PHI2 (pin 39) RW (pin 36) RESET (pin 40) HALT (pin 35) On a 1200XL we also need Pin 23, which needs to be connected to the top pad of jumper W6. This is needed to complete the ROM upgrade. In this image we see the underside of the 1200XL board, with tap points for the four pins needed. I dislike soldering directly onto chips, so trace the lines until I find a suitable tap point. See the next image for annotation. -
From the album: Ultimate 1200XL
Before we can install the Ultimate 1MB expansion card into a 1200XL, the OS ROM socket at U13 must be removed and replaced with a 28-pin socket. After it is replaced, the original ROM chip can be re-inserted to check the socket is properly installed. -
