  1. I’m currently working on a personal MAME arcade project and a couple of the games I’m thinking of using would need a spinner control. I know I could just buy a USB spinner control but, I thought I would come up with something for my own use that was a little cheaper to build yet still felt like a Tempest arcade spinner. This is my beta test unit and I still have a couple of minor changes that I want to make to it. I designed the knob to mimic a standard Atari spinner knob. Since I’m 3D printing the knob I had to design it in such a way as to be more friendly with my 3D printer. The other 3D printed part is the USB PCB bracket. This spinner control is basically a modified USB mouse mounted over a mechanical spinning disk. Since it is a standard mouse PCB the computer sees it as just that, a mouse. To keep with an authentic feel I made the mounting the same as a standard Atari arcade spinner control. I sized the disk to match the mass feel of an arcade spinner control as well. I've seen other DIY USB spinners on the web, but they never seemed all that robust and I’ve never seen anyone try to match the actual weight of an arcade spinner. So, this is what I’ve got. Let me know what you guys think.
  2. I've seen USB adapters for connecting Atari 2600 paddle controllers to a PC, but what about connecting USB optical mice to a real Atari to use as paddles? I'm interested in trying a regular wired USB optical mouse or PC wired USB optical trackball for controlling paddle games - not only would it give a different gaming experience than paddles, but optical controllers would also be "jitter proof". I have already made my own spinner controllers for MAME and Stella on the computer very simply, by duct-taping an optical mouse against a shaft (such as a wood dowel, or a wood dowel through a section of foam pool noodle) connected to a knob, and it works beautifully. So I am curious about making an adapter using an Arduino or Raspberry Pi or similar, that you can plug the mouse into, and outputs the variable resistances that would emulate a real paddle controller on the 2600. (The paddle button would be a simple matter of wiring the button to the appropriate pins.) Has anyone tried this, seen a page on this, or got any idea how a microcontroller might output the resistance range (1M ohm) that a native 2600 paddle controller would?
  3. In the end I disabled GWX to stop the nagware, but I am told the free upgrade to Windows 10 ends soon. Can anyone confirm if Atarimax's SIO2USB and APE software works ok under Windows 10?

  5. I found a site with specifications of a device that allows printing to a USB printer from a parallel printer port. It doesn't offer them for sale, the site has schematic, Eagle files, and ATmega16 firmware. The designer allows cloning of the device, but requests feedback for assigning serial numbers. http://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/~heha/bastelecke/Rund%20um%20den%20PC/USB2LPT/lpt2usb.en.htm It doesn't translate the protocol so the printer in question must be able to handle that used by the source, I believe the Epson FX protocol would be the best option for the Atari8 line. IBM has a webpage with a database that can be checked to see which printers support this. A similar commercial device is available for US$69.00 from http://www.lpt2usb.net/
  6. Hello everybody:) I just downloaded to latest version of Stella onto my laptop and got the ROMS for it. I was wondering if anybody had any joystick advice for me. The USB sticks that look like Atari knockoffs on Amazon have pitiful ratings. I'm surprised that their isn't more of a selection for vintage gaming enthusiast. I wanted to get two joysticks so my Wife and I could play together. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Scott
  7. This thread is about how I went about getting controllers to work with the Atari800Win emulator. My first problem is that three of my four notebooks have broken down (after repeated repairs, both professional and DIY) and therefore I'm running my emulator on an HP Mini, a small notebook computer. This presents some various obstacles, of which I will explain. Like most people who first begin to use emulators, I had no controllers to use with the emulator and was therefore using the keyboard to play the games. The first problem I encountered was that being that I was using a mini laptop and did not have a full sized keyboard. With no number pad or NumLock key this was a drawback. Needless to say, I quickly had a desire to use a real controller rather than arrow keys, etc. for my gameplay. I did my research and read up on how to use a joystick/controller with Atari800Win. The results were disappointing. It seemed, from what I'd read, that I needed special controllers or adapters, designed to be plugged into either the printer port or the game port, neither of which I had on my laptop. Darn! Frustrated, I decided to hold off on playing the Atari800 games and wanted to revisit some of my old Super Nintendo favorites. So I downloaded and installed ZSNES and a few roms. It quickly became apparent that my lack of a controller was now even more detrimental to gameplay because of the many more buttons on the SNES controller versus the original Atari controller. Since the only available place my computer had to plug in a controller was a USB port, logically I began to read up about use of USB controllers with emulators. After looking at the various classic USB gaming controllers available on Ebay, and watching some reviews on YouTube, I settled on the SNES USB Controller made by Tomee. I went ahead and ordered two of them. They were very well made, the price was quite reasonable. The convenience of Plug and Play made using them with the ZSNES emulator quite easy. I simply went to the emulator's menu and clicked Config>Input>Input Device #1, and began to assign the D-Pad and buttons. It worked perfectly! Then I went back and tried to get these controllers to work on the Atari800Win emulator. Not quite as easy initially but I did get it figured out. Do the following steps: Step 1) Plug in one or both USB retro gaming controllers. NOTE: My laptop computer has two USB ports on one side and one on the other. When I had both controllers plugged in on the right hand side the emulator would NOT recognize both controllers. When I moved one to the left side (i.e. one plugged in on the left and one on the right) then it DID recognize them both. Step 2) Click the following: Input>Joysticks, the Joystick Options dialog box will popup. For Joystick 1 select "2Axes 11Keys Game Pad". If a second controller is desired, then for Joystick 2 Select the other 2Axes 11Keys Game Pad (there should be two) from the drop down menu. Remember, if the two controllers are plugged in next to each other then the emulator may not "see" them both. If using a desktop computer perhaps plug one on the front USB port and one in the rear etc. Step 3) Recommended: In the Joystick Options dialog box click Advanced. The "Advanced Options" dialog box will popup. Then make sure "Do not toggle options using joystick buttons" is checked. This will allow full use of the controller's D-Pad and ANY other button on the controller may be used as the fire button. Step 4) Play! I hope that this will be of some help for people who are having difficulty getting their controllers to work for the Atari800Win emulator.
  8. I am interested in making my own SIO2PC. I came across the FTDI Friend from Adafruit for $14.75. Would that board work? I see the signal logic level is 3.3V by default, but I think the Atari SIO port is 5V. If the logic levels are okay, then I should just be able to use jumper wire to connect the headers directly to pins on the SIO port, right?
  9. Hey guys, I'm sorry if my question's been touched on before, I did look through the threads here and couldn't find anything that matched my question so here goes... I'm pretty psyched about rom testing on my Atari. Somewhere Random Terrain mentioned that you can test whilst the Harmony cart's plugged into the 2600 and PC at the same time via USB. So I download my bin image using the 'Develeopment' tab on the Harmony Programming Tool and feed it to my cart like you do with the bios? If so, how do I get the ARM directory? The menu says I'll lose the multicart capabilities whilst in this mode. Is that only until I turn off the console/unplug the USB? I'm scared of breaking my shiny new cart or my 2600 but on-the-fly-testing sounds very cool and convenient! Cheers, Doki!
  10. For anyone that has nto heard of th e Bliss-box its a product for all the retro controllers. It's not for everybody but for anyone really in to emulation its pretty damn useful. The 4-Play is a modular controller adapter for both the modern and retro gamers connecting all your favorite console controllers (up to four at once) to your computer. It begin kick starer now, the idea is to raise money to sell it for a reasonable price. Its a bit too niche for the KS I'm afraid but its worth a shot.   11. Would it be possible to create an interface to connect an Aquarius cartridge to USB? I was thinking about a simple Aquarius emulator which starts automatically when a cartridge is inserted, it would enhance the Aquarius experience Some kind of USB EPROM reader? Any ideas for a simple schematic? Regs, Martin
