Not to long ago I came across a topic talking about how difficult it was to program for the Commodore Vic 20. I've heard this before, not just on this forum, but on other sites, So, wanting an answer to this myself, (I also wanted to program game for the system) I decided to start this topic, so I, was well as others could learn how to properly code their own homebrew games for the Vic-20 from more experienced programmers/developers, But before you unleash your curiosity, you should first know a few things if you want to get into programming for this machine; Operating System(s): Commodore Kernel-Commodore Basic 2.0 Graphics/Sound: handled by the VIC (Video Interface Chip) aka MOS Technology 6560 Memory: 20 kb ROM, 5 kb RAM, (default) (NOTE: Both the graphics and RAM were changed in some way by the Super Expander Cartridge, like increasing the graphics from 178x184 to 160x160, and increasing the RAM from 5kb to 15kb. though it was the nly cartridge to do this for the Vic 20,) if any of this info above is incorrect, please let me know, I would be happy to change it to be correct. But anyway, we will discuss things like: How to View/edit sprites How to create/edit Music/SFX for Vic 20 How to properly compile the code for your program/game What is the best programming language fore the Vic 20? and many more! Ladies and gentleman of the retro computing world... this VIC-20 makes absolutely no sense. It seems to be a bit of a Frankenstein's monster, it has the wrong badge and keyboard type for the model number board (1001006 REV 3), it has a PET style keyboard with mustard function keys, with a silver (not rainbow) VIC-20 badge while the serial number sticker is for a VIC-1001. Clearly the keyboard has been replaced at some point, what really confuses me though are two of the chips on the board, they are a dark grey color with a plaque for the chip type and number, but here's the kicker the pins are gold. Could this have anything to do with the serial number, which to date is the lowest I've seen (102640). Here's some pictures for you to mull over, any help or info at all would be appreciated. It was owned by a fairly prominent journalist (I will NOT tell you his name), so it may have been a 'review computer' sent to him by Commodore, but there would likely be something in or on the case/board saying that. Also I have no means of powering it on yet, seeing as I don't have an a/c adapter that fit's nor do I have the proper video cables. Help, please

This fun hack of Fast Eddie was made possible by Hack-O-Matic 3. The Woolies are at it again stealing Bubsy's stuff and this time they stole EVERYTHING and stored it on the planet Kaboodle!!! Bubsy will need to JUMP OVER the Woolies to get it all back. In the game you'll see objects Bubsy needs to collect on based on items he collected in... Bubsy: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind. Bubsy 2 Bubsy Fractured Furry Tales Bubsy 3D Bubsy 3D: Bubsy Visits the James Turrell Respective And even the newest which came out recently that I'm enjoying... Bubsy: Woolies Strike Back. I started working on a hack of this for the Vic 20. Extremely rough and the animations for that worked a bit differently than they did the 2600/5200/800 versions. Was discouraged with it for a bit, but then I read this from a Vic 20 gamer... From TheTick1: "I played Fast Eddie on my Vic20 back in the early 80's. I may have to mess with the builtin ML monitor on VICE and work on a similar Bubsy for my good 'ole Vic20. Would be awesome to see Bubsy running on my early 80's Vic20 hardware." Figured that was enough reason to get something going for people to try out. And as much as I love the Atari 2600 version of the hack I had to remember that I didn't have the colors changed on the early revision either. So there is some touching up to do, the colors, the order of the prizes, some of the character spirits. And if someone wants to take a crack at the color changes, drop me a PM and I'll tell you where I believe the color options are based on the other Fast Eddie's I've hacked. Hello. I just picked up a VIC-20 from a thrift store for $11. It has the RF and the AC adaptor. The light powers on, but when I hook it up to my small CRT TV, there's nothing. I tried channel 3 and 4, but it's just a blank screen. Now this may be a stupid question, and I have almost no working knowledge of this stuff, but since it is a computer I assume it will power on without any cartridges or anything plugged in. Am I correct with this assumption, or do I need to plug something in to fire it up? And if not what are some basic things I could do to troubleshoot? I have a Genesis model 1 A/V cable and an RF switch for model 2, is there anything I can do with those? Pardon my ignorance on the subject and thank you in advance!

All my work with the Apple II series actually ended up making me confident enough to pull out my often ignored VIC 20 and try to get it going. I've only had the unit 12 years, but have always had issues with the RF boxes. Well, I finally got the unit going with a box that was given to me after fiddling with one of the adjustments inside the box and it is not a bad little gaming computer. Now, I only have 9 cartridges and am soon going to look for some more. Any recommended games to look for? I already have the following: Adventurland The Count Cosmic Cruncher Voodoo Castle Poker Pinball Mission Impossible Jupiter Lander Star Trek Now to find some other fun offerings. Sadly, the place I got my unit from and a place that had parts and carts was burnt to the ground by an arsonist in 2010.

Revival Studios releases new game for the Commodore VIC-20 Revival Studios has started development and publishing for the unexpanded Commodore VIC-20 home computer. Their first release is a game called Avalanche. Avalanche is a fun action game people can just pickup and play. The player has to shoot the various gems that are falling down from the top of the screen. The gems are marked with symbols and the player has to match up the symbol of his ship with the symbol on the gems. The game will automatically increase in speed, but by strategically shooting gems you can align up to 5 gems in a row to gain points as well as slowing down the game for prolonged gameplay.
