King Atari #1 Posted June 17, 2002 Okay, as you probably know, I loves me side scrolling beat-em-ups, but I need to try something new (not that Double Dragon is getting old, because that's simply impossible). Here's what I've played (we're talking arcades here): -Double Dragon -Double Dragon II -Double Dragon 3 -Bad Dudes Vs. Dragonninja -Riot City -Final Fight -Vigilante -Kung-Fu Master -Batman -Superman And I did have Renegade, but apparently no working dump exists. Anyways, can nyone here recommend a good arcade beat em up for me?
KAZ #2 Posted June 17, 2002 What about role playing type side scrollers like: Golden Axe Gauntlet Neo Geo seems to have their share of neat side scrolling coin ops too. Ninja Combat is one of them
Varan #3 Posted June 17, 2002 Try Crime Fighters. I think you'll find the bosses very entertaining.
sdstuff64 #4 Posted June 17, 2002 Try Metal Slug!!!!Sweet game.
Adrian M #5 Posted June 17, 2002 SENGOKU 1 and 2 on the SNK NEO GEO!
Nukey Shay #6 Posted June 17, 2002 BTW if you are using Mame, be sure to pick up mameinfo.dat from mame.net. It often lists "recommended games" that are similar (genre/stratagy) to the one you have selected. Gimme a PacMan or Space Invaders variant, and I'm happy. Since you seem interested in side-scrolling fighters, I would suggest... -King Of Dragons -Warriors Of Fate -The Simpsons -Ninja Clowns -Vendetta -Dungeons & Dragons -Cadillacs & Dinosaurs -Aliens -Tuff Turf BTW Renegade has problems, but it is still playable (at least in newer Mame builds)

Since you seem interested in side-scrolling fighters, I would suggest... -King Of Dragons -Warriors Of Fate -The Simpsons -Ninja Clowns -Vigilante -Dungeons & Dragons -Cadillacs & Dinosaurs -Aliens Make sure the Aliens you download is Aliens Vs Predator. That's the side scrolling beat-em-up version. The one that's called Aliens is a side scrolling shooter kind of like Contra. Don't forget about P.O.W. Released in 1988, this is still one of my favorite Double Dragon style fighting games with some great weapons thrown in for good measure!!
krisjohn #8 Posted June 18, 2002 Bargain-bin titles include; TMNT Battletoads and there was a Sailor Moon Beat-'em-Up that was fun to play as Usagi then not move the stick and just watch her get beat up.
King Atari #9 Posted June 18, 2002 Okay, I'll think that'll keep me busy for awhile! Thanks for all the suggestions (I forgot to mention TMNT, it should have been on the list).
Ze_ro #10 Posted June 18, 2002 You should definitely try River City Ransom on the NES, it's a great Double Dragon rip-off, and (for once) actually surpasses it. I'd also recommend Knights Of The Round in the arcades. --Zero
King Atari #11 Posted June 19, 2002 I should have specified in the beginning, I meant ARCADE games ! D'OH! I do thank everyone for their suggestions, I'm gonna go searching for ROMs. You should definitely try River City Ransom on the NES, it's a great Double Dragon rip-off, and (for once) actually surpasses it. Tried it, hated it. While it was innovative in spots, the characters looked SOOOOO stupid, the punches and kicks weren't especially good, and you can't jump on stuff at all. And you just CAN'T surpass Double Dragon.
Varan #12 Posted June 19, 2002 I have over 300 working ROMs for the latest version of MAME. Let me know which one(s) you need and I can send them to you. I know off hand that I have Crime Fighters, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Alien VS Predator and the Simpsons (2 and 4 player versions). There are several more side scrolling fighters (several for that I can only play when I'm in Japan.....) not listed in this thread that I can't remember, and I'm at work so I can't look. King Atari #13 Posted June 26, 2002 Hey, thanks for the offer, but I know where I can get everything. Thanks, though.
Atarinvader #14 Posted June 26, 2002 Try 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Tutrles' you can be Donatello, Michelangalo, Raph....uh what? I'm getting carried away? I'm not too sure on the exact name, but I'm pretty sure that there was only one Turtles game in the arcade. Oh, and X-Men. Both are Double Dragon style suedo-3D-side-scrolling-beat-em-up type games and both worth a look-in. BTW The Simpsons is absoluetly top notch, but very very difficult to track down on the web now, so if you want it then email me.
King Atari #15 Posted June 26, 2002 Actually, there were two TMNT arcades: The original, and the sequel, TMNT: Turtles in Time. I've had both for quite awhile now. I actually just got The Simpsons today, off of EdgeEmu (4-player version, though they had the others). It's a great game (I remember playing it once or twice in the arcades), but the bummer is that I can only be Marge, I can't figure out how to choose the other characters, Same with the TMNT games. Gunstar #16 Posted June 26, 2002 You gotta try 'NARC' (as in narcotics officer) I loved playing that one in the arcades... I'll have to get into mame and start playing arcade games again...I've been on about a 10-12 year hiatus from arcade games (REAL arcade games I'm talking, not computer/console ports), sitting comfortably at home and playing vids has been my style since shortly after high school. Varan #17 Posted June 27, 2002 On 4-player Simpsons, character selection is based on what coin slot you use. So Marge is coin slot 1, Homer is coin slot 2.. Maggie and Bart are 3 and 4. So if you wanna play Homer, press "6" for coin slot 2 instead of 5. If you download the 2-player version, you can do coin slot one and then select the character you want. EDIT - Coin Slot, not player.
Miles Tails Prower #18 Posted June 27, 2002 Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, Shinobi, Kung-Fu Kid, Golden Axe, The Streets of Rage, Power Stone 2. That should hold ya for a while. (Most of these games are on Sega Master System, with the exceptions of Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and Power Stone 2. Power Stone 2 is on Dreamcast, the rest are on Genesis.) Varan #19 Posted June 27, 2002 Ok, I perused my MAME for some side scrollers not listed yet and here are a couple: The Combatribes Galivan - Cosmo Police Ginga NinkyouDen Legend of Hero Tonma Toki Willow Vendetta Of those, I personally like Toki the best. Vendetta and Combatribes are very similar to Double Dragon play. Oh, and I have a working Renegade ROM if you need it. I'm running Mame32 0.
Miles Tails Prower #20 Posted June 27, 2002 In my opinion, Alex Kidd in Shinobi World is the best Side-Scroller EVER!
King Atari #21 Posted June 28, 2002 You gotta try 'NARC' (as in narcotics officer) I loved playing that one in the arcades... You know what? I just bought that for NES a few days ago, loved it, then got it for MAME. All I can say is that Mortal Kombat has NOTHING on NARC. Drugs are bad, Mindless violence is good.
