8th lutz #1 Posted January 8, 2007 (edited) http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/08/for-sale-egm-and-1up/ I am not suprised with egm being for sale. Gameinformer is the leading game magazine out there in a sad state of game magazines. I think people get their reviews more then out of magazines nowday. I am shocked that gamepro still exists. Pixelboy #2 Posted January 9, 2007 American gaming mags should pick up some serious clues from Retro Gamer. Now there's a mag that's fun to read, from cover to cover. I've bought every issue despite its high price and I haven't been disappointed very often along the way. EGM and Gamepro can go under for all I care, and it's not just because I enjoy retro gaming, but because the "mainstream" gaming mags just haven't been able to evolve in a good way. Flojomojo #3 Posted January 9, 2007 I agree about the print magazines -- I gave up on the US mags a long time ago, as did most people. Why buy dead trees when it's online for free? 1up.com is OK for content and I hope someone other than Gamespot or IGN can pick it up. The UK magazines EDGE, GamesTM, and Retro Gamer are still worth reading IMHO. I like the fact that like Game Informer, they all have Retro sections (Retro Gamer has a "current" section ) Edge is an affordable subscription now, which is a bonus. If only Retro Gamer were as cheap in the USA as it is in the UK by subscription. I can't justify the $12+ monthly for this thing, which is already starting to repeat itself. Bill Brasky #4 Posted January 10, 2007 Retro Gamer is all Speccy this and Spectrum that. It's great if you worship the Spectrum. The only game magazines I remember being worth reading were Next Generation, when it was a thick magazine. NG took themselves and the industry a little too seriously sometimes and they were gay for Dave Perry . GameFan was pretty slick and had good reviews but they were way too into very expensive, obscure import games and dorky anime. They actually reviewed late release Jaguar and NUON games though. kevincal #5 Posted January 10, 2007 Ya...game magazines from the 90's were SOO much better than current videogame mags. But it's obvious why as internet has taken over the world...heh. NG and GF were a couple of my favs too. I'm only missing a couple issues of GF and have most of the first 50 issues of NG.
ninjarabbit #6 Posted January 11, 2007 EGM has been crap for a long time except for Seanbaby's collum and even lately Seanbaby has been a bad imiation of his former self.
PuddWakkr #7 Posted January 11, 2007 I just like when seanbaby makes fun of "That's so Raven". Cracks me up something fierce. OH SNAP!! Other than that EGM gets a good exclusive every once in a while but even then the info and screens are available days beforehand on the web. Just seems like a bad time to be in the printing of magazines business. Lead times are not even close to the web.
jboypacman #8 Posted January 11, 2007 With all the info you can read and get online its no surprise that EGM is on the sale block.Todays VideoGame mags.are just weak compared to how they were back in the early 90's.I do love looking thru Retrogamer mag.But that cover price can be a bit much for me.Am lucky that i work for a printing company and we started to print the new "Diehard Gamefan"or what ever they call themselfs these days(the new name of the mag slips my mind at the moment)so i can check this mag out for free right at work.Buts been a bit dissapointing as of late.If your into Nintendo, Nintendo Power i think is still pretty soild but your not going to get complete coverage of Videogames in that one, just Nintendo product.Friend of mine,Zeta gets a fanzine in the mail which is pretty good. The name escapes me but i think its Mr.Raroo and Ms.Raroo.Its pretty good they cover NES,SNES,Gamecube,Sega Genesis,TurboDuo,and Gameboy from what i seen of it.I havnt bought a Videogame magzine in i dont know how long and i most like wont buy another one again in a very long while(Retogamer i might consider).I just dont read reviews on games anymore i rather just go and buy a game if it catches my eye.If i like it, i like it and if i dont then i dont.So if EGM,Gamepro,or any other of these gaming mags.were gone tommorow it wouldnt have any effect on me. Jess Ragan #9 Posted January 11, 2007 Ah yes, Game Time with Mr. and Mrs. Raroo. That's a pretty good fanzine, and one of the few video game newsletters still in publication. JR
Flojomojo #10 Posted January 11, 2007 Ah yes, Game Time with Mr. and Mrs. Raroo. That's a pretty good fanzine, and one of the few video game newsletters still in publication. Thanks for the link, that sounds like fun. I love fanzines ... I'm sad that Tower Records is out of business so I no longer have a source for crazy paper zines. Mr. Raroo posts on http://www.1up.com/do/my1Up?publicUserId=5483531 and it's always fun to get excited about SNES and Genesis games ten years after the fact. Regarding Next Generation, it's long dead, but EDGE is still here and the USA subscription rate is actually pretty reasonable. I'm enjoying their FILE reprints from the early years, when 3DO, Jaguar, SNES, and Genesis were state of the art and Playstation/Saturn/"Ultra64" were still months away. Internet rumors say that MTV is interested in 1UP. Damn kids get off my lawn.
