Dynasty Warriors 5 Empires

Anyone have Dynasty Warriors 5 Empires?

I was watching a friend play DW4 Empires on his PS2 the other day. I had skipped on the Empires series because DW3, 3XL, DW4, and 4XL had burned me out. But now I've recharged and it looked really cool.

Since it's all the same, I'd want to get the game for my 360. I'm also really enjoying Samurai Warriors 2 which isn't exactly next gen, so I'm assuming its the same kind of half-hearted port. Here are my questions:

1) Did the game get a slight graphical update ala Samurai Warriors 2?

2) Can you play as the normal Dynasty Warriors cast of characters? Some reviews make it sound like you have to create a custom leader to play.

3) Can you play Empire mode in split screen with a friend? This is a real deal breaker. I view the Dynasty Warriors games as the primary descendants of the old sidescrolling brawlers (Golden Axe, Double Dragon, Streets of Rage, and the sort), and games like that are best enjoyed with a buddy. So, if my buddy and I can't conquer China together, then this game isn't something I'd want.

4) Assuming #3 is a yes...In Empire mode can both players play custom generals? And/Or can one player play a normal general while the other plays a custom general?

I have Samurai Warriors 2 and had Dynasty Warriors 5 Empires for a while on my 360. I played it enough to be able to answer your questions.

1. I think the game did get a slight graphical update from the PS2 version. The fog doesn't seem to be as bad (the graphics loading in the backgroud), and the players look a little nicer. However, doesn't expect anything next gen in the graphics department.

2. You do not have to create a custom general to play the main story mode, however this can be fun. I have a friend who made a son for Cao Cao, and in the end he became much more powerful than he ever was. The same characters in the regular Dynasty Warriors games are playable, however you either have to conquer the army that has them to get them, or they have to ask to join your army. Some of them are wanderers looking for a fight. Let's say for example you start off as Liu Bei and have Guan Yu and Zhang Fei as your generals and you conquer the Yellow Turban guys. After the battle the game says what enemy generals were captured or escaped. If the were captured you can ask them to join you and they will either accept or refuse. At this point you can either release them or execute them. If you execute them, they are off of the board for the rest of that game.If you release them they are fre to go join whatever side they want, and you may have to battle them again, and the second time they may be much stronger. The game ends obviously when you conquer China. When you start over all players reset. I believe the levels also reset.

3. The answer is yes, you can play split screen with a friend. It is only co-op however, no "who can conquer China? Me or you?" (although I would have liked to see this). The person who plays as player 2 has to choose a general that is active in the battle you are currently playing, so selecting is limited depending on where you are in the game. I am not sure if player 2 can play a created general, however I'm assuming this is probably possible if you have 2 created players on your team.

Hopefully that helps you. I would pick this game up because it is worth it for the price. It's a nice strategy game with hack and slash built in. I like the fact that even though it is open ended, some of the battles that really happened like the Yellow Turban Rebellion happen just as normal Dynasty Warriors-like stages. Another game you might like if you like the Dynasty Warriors/Samurai Warriors series is a game for the PS2 called Devil Kings. The characters are fictional dipictions of some of the more famous Samurai Wrrior characters. Also, a Samurai Warriors 2 Empires game is in the works, scheduled to be released this spring. http://www.koei.com/

If it isn't obvious I am into Chinese and Japanese history, which fuels my love for theses games. I know a lot of the story behind most of the characters for both Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors.

Have fun!

Well, this was precisely the kind of answer I was after. Especially including the bit about how the various generals in the game can't be directly selected. So, thank you.

The reviews on this game were particularly worthless because all they never actually try to describe the game. They just go on and on about how its the same game as the last iteration. Odd how they don't treat other franchise games that way. Koei must be behind on their advertising bill.

Anyway, it sounds like me and my button mashing buddy will have fun with this one. So thanks for taking the effort of answering my questions.

I'm waiting for Bladestorm: The Hundred Years War and praying that Gundam Musou gets a North American release (to make up for the horrible Gundam Crossfire, it better). I haven't decided about Samurai Warriors 2 Empires yet.

I went over to gamefaq and they list Mobile Ops: The One Year War, or the alternate title Mobile Suit Gundam: Operation: Troy.

It looks like this should be out in March '07? The screen shots looked waaaaay cool. Is this the same Gundam game you're talking about?

Nah. I doubt they're the same things. Gundam Musou was only recently announced for Japan release, and doesn't have a US date, AFAIK. It's also a PS3 exclusive so far. Although I think Bladestorm will be dual platform.
