I Need help finding a 50-pin cartridge connector

Recommended Posts

I have a little SMS hack project in mind and I need to find a 50-pin cartridge connector along with a connector for a Game Gear... anybody have any idea where I could find these? I don't see many places selling replacement parts for old Sega systems. Hmm.. :?

www.jameco.com has 50 pin card edge connectors. I don't own an SMS so I don't know if the thickness will be correct. As for finding a Game Gear size female connector, I don't know you can source those from anywhere. Obviously if you need the male side, just open up an old cart and go from there.

Yeah I was looking at the connector that Jameco had just yesterday, right now I don't have a SMS cart to compare it's specs to only a Game Gear game.. Hopefully I could find a broken Game Gear for that connector (wouldnt wanna cannibalize a working one :/ )

I kind of have the Idea that your going to try to build a GG to MS adaptor. One of my friends from long ago had one, so it should be possible, but then, it may have been a special build an not a retail part. (just know that some games will have jacky colors for some reason)

As for parts, GG's go bad so quickly, if you have any friends that have the thigs, chances are, one of them will have a dead system they won't mind parting with. As for MS card connectors, you'll probably have to find someone with a dupe game to scrap for it's card edge connector.

You should be able to use a standard 50-pin 0.1"-spacing edge connector. Whatever you find at an electronics store will probably work. Just don't expect it to work with long wires between the cart and anything that wants to read it at full speed. (but for a cart dumper, long wires are probably okay)

And you could even make your own Power Base Adapter:

FYI this won't work on the Genesis 3.

Maybe one of these days I'll try to make a PBA board for a Nomad. That would actually be useful.
