Xbox 360: The Next Generation?

Recommended Posts

There's been plenty of rumors about an Xbox 360 equipped with an HDMI port and a more spacious hard drive. This is the latest one, coming from the land down under. The new system is supposed to come with all the features the original Xbox 360 SHOULD have had, along with a price tag that comes too close to the Playstation 3's for comfort.

If I were Microsoft, I would forget about charging nearly $600 for this super-system. It's ridiculous to tack an extra two hundred dollars onto the price for 100 gigs of extra storage and an HDMI port that would offer only marginal improvements over a component or VGA cable. What they should do instead is make this new system part of the premium package, and demote the current premium console to core status. They might lose a little money on the deal, but it would put that lousy 64M memory card into retirement for good, and make the system that much more tempting to gamers who can't justify the high price of the PS3.

UK, January 10, 2007 - Last week hearts and minds of 360 owners were sent fluttering into overdrive thanks to rumours of a revised console. A photograph purporting to be from a reliable source showed what some people had been silently dreaming about at night - a HDMI port and a bigger hard drive.

But like some kind of horrific monster that preys on children's thoughts, Microsoft's Christ Satchell has turned those dreams into nightmares. "At the moment, everything you might have seen is just looking at our experimentation back in Redmond, not really a product that we're thinking about announcing," he told Gamespot.

I wouldn't worry about it.

There is no way that Microsoft would charge $600 for the system if it had HDMI and a 100 gig HDD. The PS3 is $600 and has HDMI, 60 gig HDD, WiFi, and a fucking Blu-Ray player. If M$ were to charge $600 for their system, PS3 would instantly become the better deal. I think it would be much more likely that these upgrades would come in lieu of a price drop.

I could give a rat's behind about WiFi or HDMI since I have a wired network and a VGA cable, but I am ready, willing and able to fork over some cash for a bigger HDD. 20 gigs is ridiculously small considering all of the downloadable content on XBL, and Microsoft NEEDS to address the issue ASAP.

Mickeysoft needs to put an HDVD drive in there first before they charge that much.

Anyways with all of their downloadable content (including movies/tv shows) they really need to address the hard drive issue. Definetly short sightedness on their part.

Selling two seperate systems may have been a smart move to begin with (to make the purchase less painful). Ultimately they need to phase out the core unit and replace it with something that has a hard drive.

Why they allowed this once they decided to have downloadable video content is beyond me.

Considering the fact that the hdd is removeable I would simply like to see a bigger drive on the market. I have a system and the hd-dvd addon and have no intention of buying another. HDMI is not enough to make me want it.

^^ If someone were to upgrade their 20 gig hard drive to a larger model, how would they transfer the data over? Or would the upgrader be outta luck?

You could do it with a 3rd party device like XSata. I transferred all my stuff over when my original 360 gave up the ghost.

that would kind of suck tho, because the dedicated Xbox people who got it around when it came out, their 360's wouldn't be as cool or anything and that would suck, all the ppl who havent bought it yet and then bought it later would be all braggin to dedicated Xboxers and saying their's is better and cooler.

The additionally hard drive would be cool, but it woould seem crazily expensive to upgrade, like buying the XSata like mentioned aboved and then the $150-200 for the actual HD? yeah, that's not something in my budget at all.
