AtariKari #1 Posted February 16, 2007 (edited) Hello, Haven't been here for a while but this seems newsworthy: in London a few days ago I grabbed vid of a yellow Jaguar VR hiding in the "Game On" exhibit: http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/exhibitions/gameon/. It looks complete with tracker and guts. It was clear they didn't want pics/video so I had to move fast, hence the janky stabilization. The tag next to the headset says "Developer: Takara/Phillips...Courtesy of Cybermind, Ltd." Here is their site: http://www.cybermindnl.com/ Awesome to find this in the back corner of a multi-room, very comprehensive overview of VG history: PDP-1 through Wii, including Tempest 2K. I thought the consensus was that there were only two working VR units (owned by a member here: http://www.atariage.com/Jaguar/faq/index.html ). If not I've been out of the loop longer than I thought I'm still having problems capturing video--my DV camera hangs the default MS capture software, but this is most of it. Hope you find it as cool to watch as I did to capture. http://youtube.com/watch?v=4kjj7UdFyVE edit: removed the partial upload of the vid here. The_Laird #2 Posted February 16, 2007 Its not a Jag VR Unit its just a Phillips VR Headset - totally different things. There are only 2 working Jag VR's (designed by Virtuality) and this isn't one of them. I think we covered this same headset somewhere before?
LinkoVitch #3 Posted February 16, 2007 Dunno what that is but that looks nothing like the JagVR unit. The tracker looks more like a cheap modem painted Yellow.. the one I have fiddled with and used the tracker looks a LOT different and features a large circular window for the IR positioning. It's based on the tracker units that Virtuality used in their systems (infact I believe JaySmith 'king of VR' has one of those and confirmed this SU2000 units I think). The actual helmet I think is a pretty generic design. But even that looked wrong... I wonder if that is someone trying to scam someone into thinking it is the VR Unit ???? HiRes JagVR Unit now that IS 100% a jagVR unit..
jaysmith2000 #4 Posted February 17, 2007 It's definitely not the Jaguar VR. It's a scuba that was painted. May be an early version of the Scuba. When they canned the Jaguar VR they wanted to recoup some of their losses so they made the Scuba. There isn't any tracking however with this unit. Don't be fooled by it. Paolo #5 Posted February 17, 2007 Well, somebody should tell this to the GameOn folks, I think. Maybe it is a genuine mistake and they just need to replace the tag.
AtariKari #6 Posted February 18, 2007 Oh well, once Jay weighs in on the issue it's over . I knew it looked vastly different than the two working units and the other parts that have surfaced, but you never know. The exhibition was sponsored by Nintendo. I guess they didn't focus so much on the details. And besides, how many people would even know what a real unit looked like?
+doctorclu #7 Posted February 18, 2007 I just figured multiple companies bid on the JagVR helm concept.
carmel_andrews #8 Posted February 21, 2007 Unsurprising really considering that the company Atari did the deal with for the Jag VR system was also London based I think the firm was called 'Virtuality' or something like that Apparently the japanese coin op firm Tankara or Tanaka stepped in when Atari pulled out of the whole VR deal
