Wicked: 2600 Pac-Man labels on a roll

Recommended Posts

If I had this in my collection, I would mount a toilet paper dispenser and let the sticker roll dangle. This would not only serve to display the piece, but to show how I felt about the VCS Pac-Man port.

Those are very interesting and would be a great addition to someone's collection if you're into oddball items for your Atari collection. But the starting price of $240 is a bit high, that works out to $8 a label!

I wonder how many labels were originally on the roll. A completely unused roll of 2600 labels would be a sight to see!

yeah...that looks like a pretty large "hub"...I would think there would be a lot on a complete roll. I never knew they were on a roll...lol...I assumed they would come in sheets...interesting. Wonder if the end labels were on a roll as well? :ponder:

I think it is too pricey myself......besides, these are Pac Man labels we are talking about here.

I used to work at a mail-order facility and for awhile used rolls of Return to Oz bubblegum wrappers as packing material. Hated the stuff, actually (the waxy finish was irritating to my hands when I crumpled it up) but I'm sure my employer got it pretty cheap.

There's no way the stickers would have been produced in rolls of 30. My guess is that the unit for sale represents the end of a roll which was swapped out prior to being totally depleted. I don't know if the sticker-application equipment would have been designed for zero-downtime changeover the way newspaper presses are, but if so it would be necessary to avoid letting the sticker supply run to depletion.

Incidentally, how many people here have seen a newspaper press perform a roll change? It's quite impressive.

Yeah, I'm sure there were many hundreds, if not thousands of stickers on the full roll. :)

They almost certainly would have been on a roll. Atari produced millions of carts. Although the earlier labels may have been hand-applied (back when they were shipping a few thousand) it would have been obvious once Space Invaders hit, if not before, that automated machinery made sense. Very few automated machines use sheets; almost all use either rolls or fanfold media. Even electronic components for automated assembly are usually shipped on reels unless they're larger than about 0.5" in the second-largest dimension (in that case they may be shipped in panels).

Thousands certainly. Consider that even at 1,000 stickers per roll there would have been thousands of rolls of Pac Man stickers.
