PSP Recommendations?

Recommended Posts

Ended up getting one for my birthday, kind of a random gift. It came with some meh ATV game, and I've got Ghost in the Shell on the way. (I imagine it's bad, but I loved the PS2 one and I'll buy anything that IG throws at me...) I went through Metacritic and picked what looked interesting to me, anyone have anything terribly negative to say about any of these?

Ultimate Ghosts and Goblins

Crush

Exit

Every Extend Extra

WTF

Lumines

Lumines 2

Metal Gear Acid 1/2

Metal Gear Portable Ops

Loco Roco

Me and My Katamari

Here's my 2 cents worth:

Ultimate Ghosts and Goblins - If you liked the classic games you'll enjoy this one... I am having fun with it.

Crush - This is the new Sega game? It's not out yet

Exit - Interesting title... controls are enough to make you go mad but the concept I find to be fun.

Every Extend Extra - haven't played but it does look cool... apparently short.

WTF - I bought this as I wanted a wario ware type of game... although it's not the same, it is really funny/weird. I enjoy playing it from time to time but I couldn't imagine this being a constantly played title.

Lumines - played it for 30 minutes or so and it has me almost hooked (problem when you have a bunch of games to play I suppose). Very slick interface (music and graphics wise) and it's a fun puzzle game that I really need to spend more time with. :)

Lumines 2 - Said to be an improved or expanded of lumines... haven't played yet.

Metal Gear Acid 1/2 - Although I scoffed at this title when I heard it was a Yugioh er card game I finally got a deal on both games and sat down with the first game. It's hard to explain... it isn't Metal Gear on the PS1/2 but it has a lot of the feel from those games... it's just slowed way down by turn based movement and combat (and the cards you have in your deck affect what you can or can not do).

Metal Gear Portable Ops - This is hailed as THE Metal Gear game for the PSP... this plays like the PS1/2 versions but it isn't a port... it's an entirely new game and a good one from the reviews. I intend on getting this in the very near future.

Loco Roco - You can download the demo at Sony's Website... dload to PC and transfer to your memstick. Best way to see what it is... I like it.

Me and My Katamari - if you played the PS2 versions then you know what this is like. I have yet to try it but intend to one day :)

There ya go.. here are a few others that I have had a lot of fun with:

Hot Shots Golf (I don't usually like Golf Games but this is a blast!)

Killzone Liberation (Not a first person shooter and I really enjoy playing it!)

GTA Liberty City Stories - even though I played the PS2 GTAIII to death I have spent many hours on this one... playing through the story as well as creating mayhem.

and there are many more but you get the idea. :) Enjoy your PSP!

Ultimate Ghouls 'n Ghosts will crush your cashews, and I don't mean that in a good way. It's not tough in a fair and reasonable kind of way, like Ghouls 'n Ghosts on the Genesis. It's viciously hard and delights in trapping you in impossible situations, like Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts on the Super NES.

My advice is this... make the first game you buy for your PSP Burnout Legends. It's fifty straight miles of awesome, featuring mind-blowing graphics and rock-solid gameplay. It'll make you forget all about that nasty little ATV game you were given with the system.

Lumines is fantastic, and features some really really good bespoke music that fits the gameplay so well - if you're after a psychadelic trance music experience (think Rez with less shooter and more puzzle) that you just melt into before you know what's happening, then it comes highly recommended. The sequel throws in some chart tracks and videos too, which kind of reduces the appeal in my eyes. Loco Roco's a superb little game too - a bit easy, but amazingly charming. Other than that, I haven't played the rest of the games on your list, although the Medal of Honour demo is pretty good once you're used to the controls - plus that features 32 player online deathmatching if 1st person shooters are your thing.

I'll definitely second the Killzone Liberation recommendation - it's a great fixed perspective 3rd person shooter. I'd also chip in Ridge Racer(or the sequel) as a brilliant arcade racer, and Field Commander as a fun strategy game(a more serious, less charming Advance Wars) too.

Those collections are a must for retro goodness! I saw Taito Legends or whatever they are calling it will be releasing in March (although I can't see it listed at EB or anywhere). It was listed as March 2007 on the Playstation release list.

As for the Burnout suggestion... I think I will have to also take that into consideration and grab it. I've been delaying purchasing any Burnout games and have only played the first one on a PS2 demo disk. I'm in for a treat! :)

the game is great! I love it.

I personally love the details and the cut scenes. It looks really good. The Team building is a pain at times, but you get used to it.

Ghost Rider: I've been toying with it. Not a big fan thus far

Rocky: Great game!

I love my PSP, its probably my most played gaming machine.

I love the new games, GTAs Vice City and Liberty City Stories, Lumines I & II, Socom I & II, Burnout, MLB 06 The Show, plus all the classic compliations are great.

PLUS...the big plus, emulators / homebrew!!! Ahh the homebrew goodness of NES, SNES, Genesis, even 2600 emulators...all portable and on the go....nothing like having literally 1000s of games on the go.....great stuff!

if you get metal gear acid 1 and 2 just don't paly 2 before 1. 2 worked out some gameplay things and if you get used to it it's really hard to go back to the first.

if you're into all things metal gear, there's also "Metal Gear Solid Digital Graphic Novel" for PSP.

Well, definitely get the classic compilations for the system. They all kick ass.

Get Field Commander, especially now that it's been dropped down to $20 most places.

Tekken: Dark Resurrection is pretty damn awesome. Definitely put that one on your list.

Just about everything for it is good. I'm looking forward to D&D Tactics (if it makes it out) and Steel Horizon.

i just got my PSP for christmas, and so far i have 3 games...

ATV, the pack in game:it is hard and i get frustrated because i can't beat races because you have to play each track perfect and if you mess up it is hard to recover, that is why i don't play it much(only played it the first couple days i had my psp)

Lumines:This is a really great game, it is a puzzle game, like Tetris-puzzle-game-style, but not the same as Tetris, it is very addicting.

Sega Genesis Collection:Me, being a "Sega Child", I grew up eating, sleeping, and breathing Sega Genesis, getting the system when i was four, it's what i grew up with. Now, something i never could imagine as a kid happened, and that is the fact that i can take my friend Sonic the Hedgehog and Joe Musashi wherever i went. Now, about the game, this is my most played game for the PSP, it has 28 genesis games, and 5 unlockable arcade games, along with info about each game, and interviews(they kind of suck tho becasue they are in japanese, but they do have subtitles). The games are ported beautifully from the genesis, each game being a direct port, nothing messed up and screwed with, and you get to save your game! Yup, instead of playing Shinobi III(one of my favorite games of all time for the genesis) for hours just because you have to beat it in one sitting, you can save in between and take breaks.

I want to get MGS:Portable Ops as it will be awesome i am sure. And I want to try other game "collections" for the psp, as i was so impressed with the genesis' collection game.

Huh? I found both Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts to be hard in a reasonable way, not cheap. Yes, SG & G requires patience to get through the levels, but it doesn't put you in impossible situations. I can't comment on UG&G, but, from what I heard, it's also hard in a reasonable way, not cheap like you suggest. The arcade Ghouls 'n Ghosts is a bit harder than the Genesis one, though.

huh? I think Super Ghouls and Ghosts on the SNES plays plenty fair. It's masterable too. Heck I just beat it again a couple weeks ago!

PSP G&G though.. yeah it's hard. One way to get it going though is to play it on the easiest difficulty. I was able to get through it that way and it was still enjoyable.

That's what i'm doing. I can't imagine investing the time to get through this on 3 lives.

It's very impressive, graphically. I hope they make more like this.

(And I'll keep crossing my fingers for Klonoa 3 on PSP...)

I think mastering a game like UG&G isn't impossible... especially when there were NES titles that were much tougher in the 80's. I guess it takes some time to really learn the patterns and what to expect etc.

As for the future PSP titles... here are some titles I am very interested in:

-Hot PXL

-Dungeons and Dragons

-300: March to Glory (The movie looks impressive so the game has me interested!)

-Burnout Dominator

-Elder Scrolls

-Manhunt 2

-Gran Turismo

-Transformers (I really have set high hopes on the games... the movie.. I'm not so sure about it)

My friend Jeremy could explain the game's flaws better than I could...

http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3153306

JR

That is way harsh. I saw videos of the game in action and the graphics look excellent. Most of the complaints seem to be about how the game still keeps the old school mechanics of the previous games (and the review doesn't even mention the new mechanics like the dash and hanging on ledges). I don't like the way he generalizes 2D games with 3D graphics. Some of them do look ugly, but some of them look quite nice in both graphics and animation.

Just hang on Square is coming out with serverial FF7 related titles later this year

True... there's FF Tactics and at least FFI and II and the FFVII spinoff... perhaps we will see more this year or it will go into next year. I'm looking forward to those as well. (Currently playing through Legend of Heroes - Tear for Vermillion and although it's a basic RPG, I'm really liking it... I hope to finish this one so I can pick up the second... and eventually the third.)

Ridge Racers 2. Speeeeeeed!!!!!

Aside from that, LocoRoco is superb (and they have halloween and Christmas themed demos that you can download to your PSP for free), Me & my Katamari is pretty good but the control system suffers from the lack of two sticks and, somehow, it doesn't FEEL like Katamari. Maybe because the original creator had no input in it. Still good though.

I would suggest downgrading your PSP to 1.50, then upgrading it to Dark Alex's Custom Firmware 3.03c Open Edition.

Then you can play all the emulators, homebrew games, and backups of your own games without having to lug all those stupid fragile UMD discs around with you.

get all that stuff here:

http://dax.lan.st/

then you can use all the Atari Emulators.

Just wanted to give a quick update, I went on a mini spending spree and picked up a bunch of titles. My opine:

Great:

Gradius Collection (I mean, come on.)

Ridge Racer (A great, moderately challenging arcade racer.)

Lumines (It's neo-tetris. Great visuals and music.)

Loco Roco (It's diffferent enough to keep me occupied, lots of hidden crap to find.)

Good:

GitS Stand Alone Complex (Once you get used to the controls, it's not bad. Reminds my of Goldeneye.)

Exit (A great game marred by icky controls.)

WTF (It'll keep you busy, but eventually you stop caring.)

Ultimate GnG (Same old controls, prettier graphics, insane dfficulty.)

Bad:

XMen Legends 2 (Clunky, this type of game is not made to be portable.)

Every Extend Extra (Graphically boring, little challenge.)

XMen Legends 2 is on the bad list? Gee... I sooo want to get that game for the PSP. I did enjoy the first one on the PS2so I'm sure I'll enjoy the portable version.

EEE is short from what I heard but there is a hidden challenge (more of an arcade title) in terms of getting better scores... that's the challenge from what I understand.
