Star Trek: The Motion Picture rental download

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if the Star Trek: The Motion Picture download available on Live is the original version of the movie?

For years the Extended Version has been available on VHS. The Director's Edtion is available on DVD. But I haven't seen the original since the very first VHS release in the very early 80s, or maybe even back when I saw the movie in the theaters in 1979. So, I'm not very interested in watching the "fixed" versions (I've already owned those for years), but I am very interested in seeing the original cut of the film again.

i would like to see the original also

i have 2 VCD copies of this, one is from a Malaysia box set, and the other is the Philips CD-i version

both of those are the 143 min versions

132 min / USA:136 min (director's cut) / USA:143 min (TV version)

this came from imdb

im guessing we want the 132min version :)

You know, I think this is the original version. I downloaded it yesterday and watched about half of it, so far. It definitely is not the Director's Cut that was released on DVD, and I don't think this is the extended TV version, either.

Anyone know what the main differences between those versions are? Maybe something that would really stand out and be totally obvious? My mind is not always the best at picking out the differences. I tend to forget what scene goes with which version.

I'm pretty sure that this is the actual original cut, though. It seems like things that were in the TV version are missing. The Xbox Live marketplace has this one listed at 130 min. I haven't timed it out yet, as I fell asleep last night. Maybe tonight.

And why the hell are these downloads so slow through Xbox Live? I mean sure, it's 1.4 GB, but it took 8-9 hours to complete! There's no immediate satisfaction there!

There's a lot of subtle differences between the two. Updated special effects, a few longer scenes. It's like a Star Wars Special Edition but not so "George Lucas in your face I'm gonna spit on your childhood."

There's a documentary on the retail DVD release that explains all the differences.

I may be wrong about this. It's been a long time since I saw the original version. But one scene I can think of which is in the Extended Version and the Director's Edition which I don't recall being in the original happens when Kirk has just been on the Enterprise bridge for the first time and then leaves to find Decker.

It's a little snippet after Kirk has left. Sulu says, "He wanted her back. He got her." Then some alien guy says "And Decker? He's been with this ship every moment of her refitting." To which Uhura replies, "Ensign, our chances of returning in one piece... they may have just doubled." I think the original cut of the film just immediately goes from Kirk entering the turbolift to the scene in engineering.

Yeah, that's not in this version.

When the credits rolled it was roughly 2:07:00 into the movie, so I would say this is the original cut. I'm pretty positive.

Funny, I thought that was in the original? Or it may just be that I've got the extended version on VHS and have seen it so many times. :ponder:

Is this or any of the other movies worth watching for someone that likes the original series and the cast of the show? How different are they from the tv shows?

KHAAAAAAAN!!!

I'm interested in the original Star Trek episodes, shown in high-definition. I can't imagine how this would work (these episodes were filmed in the late 1960's, for crying out loud!) or if those corny sets would even look any better in 720p, but I'd be willing to give it a shot just for shiggles.

There are two reasons why I haven't downloaded any of the HD versions of the original Star Trek episodes. The first is that I have all three DVD box sets of the original series, so it seems a bit redundant to buy the HD versions. The second is that I don't want to waste space on the teeny 360 hard drive.

Damn, I gotta go watch Star Trek: The Motion Picture now :)

Easily my favourite trek movie and the only one to really communicate the vastness of space (in a kind of 2001, Silent Running type way - though I guess all these films had visual effects by Doug Trumbull, so that's probably it).

How does the online movies and TV shows work? Can you only watch them for a certain number of days and then it stops working?

I think you own the TV shows while the movies are only rented for 1 day from the point where you first start playing them.
