Noble Kale #1 Posted June 22, 2002 I was wondering about the possibilities of using linux on my Atari ST (yes, I'm *very bored). I've seen a bit of a faq about using one as a serial terminal..... but I was wondering if anyone has some more up to date information/ideas?
Atari-Jess #2 Posted June 24, 2002 well you do have that unix for the ST that mint program or at least one of them is linux similar but i doubt it is compatible from what ive read, just forget trying to use linux for a ST its just not worth it. not to say that if you really wanted to you shouldn't cause thats up to you in the end. but whatever. Noble Kale #3 Posted June 24, 2002 I read about and basically noted that it's not worth doing. Not enough memory, and you'd need a hdd - which I don't happen to have
+Sauron #4 Posted June 25, 2002 Actually, it's quite possible to do at least a very stripped down version of Linux on the ST. It would be severely handicapped, though. The stock ST chipset is missing a few features that Linux generally takes advantage of. However, it is still possible, even without a hard drive. There's several Linux distros available that fit just fine on a floppy disk, although they're mostly highly specialized for a specific task. If you happen to have a Falcon030, TT030, or a Hades system, check out http://www.netbsd.org/Ports/atari/ for a port of NetBSD. I haven't personally used it yet, but if it's anything like FreeBSD, it should be fairly simple to install.
Wrathchild #5 Posted June 25, 2002 uClinux is the base to use, downside is that it needs to be ported to the ST first however most of the code for this exists for the 68020 Atari machines and appears to require restructuring the uClinux way. This provides Linux for machines without an MMU and FPU. But don't expect to run a GUI with it. (see www.uclinux.org) Regards, Mark
sonnenhexer #6 Posted July 19, 2002 Found on ebay a Linux-CD for the ST/E/TT with minimum 68030. Linux for ST/TT Michael
sonnenhexer #7 Posted July 26, 2002 I bought this Linux for ST and today I got it. It was a CD-R. And on ebay.de it is forbidden so sell CD-Rs with programs, only blank CD-Rs are allowed to sell. Michael
Albert #8 Posted July 26, 2002 I bought this Linux for ST and today I got it. It was a CD-R.And on ebay.de it is forbidden so sell CD-Rs with programs, only blank CD-Rs are allowed to sell. (I know this is off topic, but I'm curious...) It's illegal in Germany to sell CD-Rs that have data on them?! What is up with that? There are tons of legitimate uses for selling CD-Rs. What if I'm a small shareware author selling my program on eBay and I'm using CD-Rs as the media? What if I'm a graphic artist and I I want to sell a disc full of my work? And Linux distributions are free anyway, so (in general) selling copies of Linux distributions on CD-R is fine. ..Al
sonnenhexer #9 Posted July 26, 2002 Ebay.de forbids to sell programs on CD-R. I think it´s because many copies of games are on CD-R. But when you read it at the terms of ebay, they forbid it. And I think 4 Euros plus 2,50 Euros shipping is for a CD-R not ok. A few months ago I bought for the same price a Linux for the Amiga and it was an official CD. +Sauron #10 Posted July 27, 2002 Have you installed it yet on your ST? Let us know how well it works! I'd be interested in hearing about it.
sonnenhexer #11 Posted July 27, 2002 I myself have only a 260ST, but a friend of mine has an ST with a 68030, which is minimum. This Linux doesn´t work with all STs. Michael
sonnenhexer #12 Posted July 27, 2002 If anybody is interested, I can copy this CD and mail it, I will charge 0,50 USD for the CD-R plus shipping, so I don´t earn any money. Michael
