Wonderful stuff, great reading. I highly recommend it to anyone

who loves CRPGs, gamed in the 80's or both...

 

I did note one small error on the authors part though. In part 2

he claims that in the Atari ST version of Dungeon Master, you

can not control the movement keys with the keyboard. That

is completely wrong.

 

I tried to contact them from their website, but could not. That

should really be corrected, IMHO.

I wonder why he ignored the console games:

At the end of part 2 he apologizes to anyone who thinks their favorite game should be there (and name drops

Zelda). He says he could only cover games he's familar with. There is already nearly 30 pages on the subject of

computer RPGs it could be twice as long detailing consoles! But he does make note of computer games that

ended up being ported.

 

Of course some might argue that the console RPGs are pretty lightweight fluff compared to the computer RPGs of

the day. Adventure for example is pretty basic compared to Ultima 1 and doesn't have the stats aspect which is

commonly associated with CRPGs.

 

Regardless its a pretty impressive history and it seems he played many of the games in emulators in research.

Perhaps the consoles will get their due in a seperate article.
