I realised how good the CV really was ,and still is!

Recommended Posts

I just have to say that after putting my ColecoVision away for a while, like a year and playing my other consoles,INTV,ATARI 400/800,7800,2600,etc, realized how GOOD the CV is!.I got Q-bert and Frogger the other day,one word"SUPERB"...they,re in my taste, the best versions!,and the same goes for alot of its other games. My other consoles,i love them all,but the CV has WAY BETTER SOUND than alot of my other classic consoles.Im not saying its the best console, but the best for "ME".After being disappointed with the HORRIBLE sound of other consoles sound quality, its nice to hear a game with great sound to go along with great colorful graphics like the CV.

Yeah the CV is a great console. It's tied with the VCS for my all-time fav system. A ton of great games, lots of goofy add-on crap like the roller and driving controller and the Super Action sticks equals classic gaming nirvana for me.

You should go to the AA Store and buy Astro Invader and Spectar for the CV. Not only are they EXCELLENT arcade ports but the guy who did the art for the boxes/labels/manuals is a freaking genius ;)

I know! Donkey Kong JR has to be my favorite CV game followed closely by Burger Time and Mr. Do! My CV lately though has been serving as my Atari with the expansion module.

Yup, the CV rocks! It did what others couldn't at the time, and really 'brought the arcade home' :D

Mind you, it was generally the crappy arcade in that crappy mall you never went to, because they ported a lot of second and third tier arcade games, since Atari had all the best licenses. Still, the CV is far and away my favourite console. It's the only one I actively collect for.

A lot of those second and third tier games are really good though. The worst of the bunch is probably Cosmic Avenger and it's not really that bad at all. I know some people would say Space Panic is the worst but I like Space Panic.

Also, the Atarisoft ports for the CV are all pretty good so it's not like the CV missed out on 1st tier games completely. Parker Bros' Q*Bert and Frogger were first tier games and they are excellent on the CV too.

The CV is a great system. It pairs up nicely with the 5200 for arcade game goodness. The great thing about owning each of them is that most of the games are not cross platform releases, so owning Berzerk for the 5200 doesn't mean you have a dupe on the CV. Sure, there are some cross platform games, but not that many.

Good call, everybody should own both to get the complete picture. Besides on the games that are available on both, I like to play them one after another and compare. Some are better on the CV some on the 5200.

And Frenzy on the CV is MUCH better than Berzerk :D

I think in some ways this is a strength for the system. We get some rather obscure games ported over. I only ever saw Cosmic Avenger once in an arcade....and it was broke down at the time. :)

Did CV Frenzy have background music that the arcade didn't have????? I've played this game on MAME and it doesn't have the cool background music.

You should try Q*bert's Qubes. It's a much more fun game than the 1st IMO.

Hells yeah, the Colecovision is one AWESOME system. If it wasn't for the sheer Nostalgia that I have for the 2600, and all the awesome homebrews, I'd probably say the Coleco was the BEST pre NES console out there. Heck, IMO, Donkey Kong and JR were better for the coleco than the NES.

Also, with the first tier of games mostly by Atari, the Coleco actually had an awesome lineup of games that weren't available anywhere else for it's time.

My only complaint about it, is....well, it's hard to find power supply, and flakey power switch. It took me years, and finely the purchase of a (faulty) Dyna system befor I ever realized what a great system this actually is. Some day, I hope to get a good working system, or fix up one of the ones I have and add it to my permanant entertainment set up.

Colecovision was the best pre-NES console out there, and I even liked Colecovision better than NES when it came out, mostly because the early 80's was just a better era of arcade games. The majority of Colecovision's catalog seems to be good arcade games, which is another reason it was my favorite system. The games are very, very arcade like.

I was an Intellivison guy, and my friends had 2600's and one a 5200, and we all drooled over Colecovision in the old days.

Speaking of which, I don't think there'd be any problem using one of the arcade switching power supplies if you wanted to. Like the one in this thread that ended my long search for a replacement ADAM power supply

I heard really good things about this system. Wish I could have gotten to play games on it. It was a little before my time, and i don't own one. maybe i'll eventually get to play with one.

Hey,hows it going CV lovers!,i lucked out a couple days ago.Along with 6 400/800 cartridges,i found a dusty, dirty,CV at the thrift store. The first thing i did was hook it all up to see if it works, and to my amazement EVERTHING WORKS LIKE ....NEW!!!!!!!!,EVEN THE POWER SUPPLY!..,AND GET THIS,while playing a game, you can pick up the CV and place it a few feet away, and the screen stays perfectly still, not a hint of static, snow, NOTHING!NOW WE ALL KNOW WHAT MOST CV'S are like when we find them and hook them up,1..the power supply does not work..2,the on/off switch is flakey..3,the rf cable that comes out of console is SUPER sensitive, the slightest touch will fuzz up the screen, and the slightest bump will make the screen go blank, you know what i mean guys!I HAVE SEVERAL CV'S now,and this is the best i EVER owned. In a nutshell,i found a RARITY!..RARE in that i found a CV that works PERFECT.I gave this TREASURE a good thorough professional cleaning, and a good coating of armour all,im NOT going to put it away in strorage on a shelf,im going to play it!its great to have a 20-30 year old classic console that works like brand spanking new,let me tell ya!:)This is how i rediscovered how GREAT COLECOVISION WAS,CUS I HAVENT PLAYED IT IN LIKE A YEAR,then you realize how great CV is,#1 in my books!

...I hope you're kidding... Nobody can save you from the wrath of those who oppose Armour All - you have damned yourself! I urge thee to run before you are discovered for once they find you, your death will be swift!

...Not really sure why I felt the need to say it that way, but there are many here that will not be happy with your application of armour all to the CV as it apparently has adverse effects on the plastic.

Really, what kind of effects,i put it on ALL my classic gaming stuff, its done nothing but keep it looking new!ve used it for years on my collector cars, all the pro detailers use it,how different is the CV plastic from others?elaborate please:),also one popular atari site advocates it,ive used armour all on my original CV from 82,and have been putting it on ever since, and it looks like the first day it came out of box.:)

For the life of me I can't find the original topic about it, but from what I remember, when not applied after awhile, I believe it has some sort of corrosive effect on what it is put on... surely one of the old pro's here will come along sooner or later and chime in. :)

If you do a search, you'll at the very least find references to it if not the original thread about it. :)

The CV is my favorite system besides Atari. It was the best system right before Nintendo NES (not counting the C64).

Try these somewhat obscure classics:

Tarzan

Choplifter!

Antarctic Adventure

Time Pilot

Roc N' Rope

Wargames

Miner 2049er

Jumpman Jr.

There's a lot of great games on the CV!

:)

My joking comment above aside, I think the out-of-the-way arcade game ports are the strength of the ColecoVision. It seems that because Coleco couldn't get first-party license to do the popular stuff they had to find the most fun alternatives.

I also agree with the above posters about the 5200, which is why a couple of months back I picked one up. I'd never played it before, becuase I'm pretty sure they weren't sold in Canada, and it really is nice to have a wide cross section of the arcade experience from the early 80's. Now I just have to rebuild my 5200 sticks.

That reminds me, why hasn't anyone created a new CV power supply like the 7800? Surely it wouldn't be that hard. I'd do anything to get rid of that noisy brick of a power supply.

Anyway, I'd love to get into collecting for the CV more, but games (even some common ones like Gorf or DK Jr.) are a bit pricey. Any reason for this?

Erm... I've never heard any CV's power supply make any kind of noise... :?

Collecting vintage video games has gained in popularity (and in prices too) since the birth of eBay. It also depends if you insist on having the manual and the box together with the cart.

I have the CV power supply model that plugs directly in wall, only one wire comes out of it,one goes to the console, power feed, and the whole unit box has the prongs mounted on back and plugs in wall, power supply. This thing makes a loud humming noise, also,to the point i cant use it.Out of 10 power supplys ive found in the wild, only 2 have worked.Obviously,a power supply in good working conditon is silent,if it makes noise, its on its last legs.

Weird, I use the exact same model on my ColecoVision, and it makes no noise at all... I guess I'm lucky. :)
