slosu #1 Posted March 5, 2007 (edited) What are SURE signs that a cart may be a repro. I have read in some places where people question if they actually have an authentic cart or not. Have these carts been circulating on ebay and if so what can a bidder do to protect him/herself? Rom Hunter #6 Posted November 7, 2007 What are SURE signs that a cart may be a repro. The inner works can tell a lot about the true age of a cart, but I'm sure there are people who can even fake that if they really want to. IMO the best thing to do to avoid further confusions is to put the word "REPRO" on the label when creating a repro.

bones #10 Posted November 8, 2007 Bit of a tangent, but how common is it for people to try and pass off repro 2600 carts as originals? In the Neo Geo world it happens all the time, but the price of original AES/MVS carts is much higher than your typical 2600 game. One Neo Geo forum even has a sticky topic where people can post pictures and others reply back with "boot or no boot." Is something similar needed for the 2600 or is it just an ocassional scammer here and there?
+Psionic #11 Posted November 8, 2007 Is something similar needed for the 2600 or is it just an ocassional scammer here and there? Japanese stuff has always been pirated rampantly...most of the pirate stuff comes from Asia. As far as Atari carts, I've rarely seen outright bootlegs being sold as legit carts...it's usually just some occasional scammer trying to sell a repro as legit, or more commonly some bonehead who doesn't know the difference. MrRetroGamer #12 Posted November 8, 2007 Bit of a tangent, but how common is it for people to try and pass off repro 2600 carts as originals? Not that this is done intentionally that often, but if a repro has been bought and sold a few times to different "collectors", it's repro status eventually gets lost in the shuffle. If people frequent the forums here they might be aware of the carts authenticity, but the average Joe on eBay who never heard of the Atari Age site would not know, and they buy something that is not really what it seems. Some sellers on eBay are so vague on purpose because it ends up being more money in their pocket if they let the buyers ultimately decide about the carts authenticity.
