silver label space invaders & asteroids

Recommended Posts

Why is it so hard to find these two carts? They both have a rarity of 2 (i think), so why cant I find a single copy on eBay? Anyone know where to come across a silver label space invaders or asteroids?

A silver label Asteroids is definitely not a rarity of 2. As far as A silver label Space Invaders with patience u will find one cheap at times. I'd go for a complete in box.....the red box!

There are lots of silver label Space Invaders out there. They come up all the time on Ebay. Silver Asteroids is much harder to find. You might need a little patience to get one a good price.

Adding to the confusion, Atari Corp. published both silver-label and red-label Space Invaders, putting both in red boxes. Another fine example of latter-day Atari's quality control. :ponder:

I know a silver-label Space Invaders was made available by Atari Inc., but what about a silver-label Asteroids? And are either available as Atari Inc. NTSC carts?

Both were sold in red boxes, but the boxes are discernable.

I've not seen any Atari Inc. Asteroids only Atari Corps for the silver label.

The spines are different as are the backs. The Red label carts come from boxes printed in Taiwan. The Silver label carts come from boxes printed in Hong Kong.

Here's a side view:

"Atari Space Invaders" NO CX# has silver label inside printed in HK

"Space Invaders" with CX# added was printed in Taiwan

The fine print from the back of the box:

Cool, thanks! Wish I'd known that earlier, since it's the red-label cart I want and my red box has a silver-label cart. Now I know what to look for.

I have a question regarding the silver Space Invaders cart. Does anybody else have a Silver Space Invaders with a blue text end lable instead of red text like every other Silver cart? I went through my silver carts and this was the only one with a different colored end from all the others. It isn't in the rarity guide, so I thought I'd find out through here.

I've actually got two of these -- one dated 1986 and one dated 1987.

These show up pretty regularly on eBay.

Captain Beard,

How do you determine whether or not these are just labels that have come off of other space invader titles and glued onto the silver labels? I have seen several listings maybe the same auction listed several different times with Mario Bros. for the atari..They have an upside down label suggesting that this is a misprint? Where are the specifics of this ever being the actual case.. I would question a blue ended Asteroids label if the end was blue and the cover label was silver......????

Just looking for clarification....can I take black tape that looks identical to the black strips on several misprints like homerun and just place it over other titles like combat or breakout? How do you prove it? Other than tearing off the label tape hoping the label says XXX underneath?

I prove it by telling you that I got my CIB one from a little old lady in Ventura, CA with about 35 other CIB games, for around $50.

Ok so, that appeared to be a harsh reply....not what I was looking for. I'm not doubting the great Captain Beard...I was merely suggesting, "does anyone have links or proof of Atari statements suggesting the existance of such errors...other than the black tape...." I have a couple thousand Atari games myself and will need to go through them to see if I have any oddities such as these....1 out of 1000 should be an error....at least if they are so common....

Thanks guys, I figured that it couldn't be too rare given that Space Invaders is probably a top 5 seller for the 2600. There are already many different label variations for the game already, just gonna have to chalk this up with the rest of them.

What was harsh about it? Do you think the little old lady swapped an endlabel and then sell me the games for next to nothing?
