silver label space invaders & asteroids

Recommended Posts

How do you determine whether or not these are just labels that have come off of other space invader titles and glued onto the silver labels?
Besides the pretty conclusive proof offered by CPU, as I already said, silver label Space Invaders with blue end labels are relatively common, so for what you to be suggesting to be true, it would have to have happened independently many hundreds of times at least ('cuz I've personally seen many hundreds of different examples in the years I've been variant label collecting.)

Ditto the upside-down Mario labels. I've never seen one which said "Made in the U.S.A." which wasn't upside-down and I've never seen one with any other "Made in..." which was. Seems like an awfully big coincidence if not an original error on the part of the manufacturer.

And while it's not exactly hard to swap labels, unless you're actively trying to fool someone, it's more often than not pretty obvious when labels have been reattached. Kids back in the day weren't trying to make collectibles for the year 2009, they were just gluing their labels back on.

Just looking for clarification....can I take black tape that looks identical to the black strips on several misprints like homerun and just place it over other titles like combat or breakout? How do you prove it? Other than tearing off the label tape hoping the label says XXX underneath?

Well, nothing's stopping you from doing that. But apart from the douchebaggery of it all, it's not likely to exactly make you a fortune. There aren't very many of us crazy-ass variation collectors out there willing to spend much actual coin on such minor variations. Since those black-tape controller error variants fetch no more than $5-$10 or so (and usually not even that much, since they're readily found in cheap lots) and the number of interested parties is small, you're not exactly gonna be laughing all the way to the bank with such a hoax.

If you want to know about label variations which are confirmed to exist, there are plenty of resources online. And although there aren't a huge number of us nit-picking minor variations, there are enough of us that we have a pretty general sense of what's out there.

Ok so, that appeared to be a harsh reply....not what I was looking for. I'm not doubting the great Captain Beard...I was merely suggesting, "does anyone have links or proof of Atari statements suggesting the existance of such errors...other than the black tape...." I have a couple thousand Atari games myself and will need to go through them to see if I have any oddities such as these....1 out of 1000 should be an error....at least if they are so common....

What was harsh about it? Do you think the little old lady swapped an endlabel and then sell me the games for next to nothing?

You never know..I know an old lady that took all of my micro machine collection and gave it to goodwill, because she was an old lady....
