godzillajoe #1 Posted March 12, 2007 So I have some 10 foot extension cables, do those cause noticeable delays or latency of any kind or am I just drunk? Getting killed at Ms. Pac-Man this afternoon. Also, anyone know if they make any that work with 7800 controllers? Mine don't seem to be wired for the second button making some games unplayable. Foxsolo2000 #2 Posted March 12, 2007 I used one some years ago and never noticed any lag of any description. Perhaps you were just drunk
Thomas Jentzsch #3 Posted March 12, 2007 So I have some 10 foot extension cables, do those cause noticeable delays or latency of any kind or am I just drunk? Hm, let's see: 10 feet, that's about 3m. Electricity moves at ~2/3 of C, that's ~200,000,000m/s. So the delay is ~3/200,000,000s or 0.000000015s. Drunk!
Nukey Shay #4 Posted March 12, 2007 BTW standard serial port extensions will work for the console, provided there's no crossover junk going on inside. You can find them with male-to-female ends at many electronics stores...and all pins will be wired. A lotta cables made specifically for the 2600 only have the pins devoted to the sticks wired. In other words, infinitesimally small compared to any human player's response time delay. With the possible exception of Todd Rogers.
ATARIPITBULL #6 Posted March 12, 2007 I have used all three of these cords and found no problems.

Actually, your excluding the other 4-6 feet for the controller itself, the additional 4-6 feet for the controller itself, and the additional 10 feet for the extencion cable. Remember, the Atari is sending out a signal on one wire, and recieveing a signal on a different wire. (though technically, most games just leave the outgoing wire on, rather than turning it on and off, so in those cases, exclude the additional duplicate distances) Personally, the only delay I noticed, was on the wireless IR type controllers (which I don't think Atari Has, thogh some of the Nintendo ones will have a 9 pin addaptor to make them work with other 8 bits. supercat #8 Posted March 13, 2007 Hm, let's see:10 feet, that's about 3m. Electricity moves at ~2/3 of C, that's ~200,000,000m/s. So the delay is ~3/200,000,000s or 0.000000015s. Signal propagation through cables is in many cases much slower than the speed of light. In the absense of repeaters, over long distances, signal propagation time starts to increase proportional to the square of the distance (resistance and capacitance both increase linearly with length, and there's an RC delay term that's proportional to the R*C). In addition to increasing propagation time, long cable lengths will also degrade signal quality. If the signal being sent switches slowly relative to the length of the cable, this may not be a factor. If the signal itself switches quickly, the quality degredation that would result without repeaters may render it useless.

I just found these and these yesterday - might have to pick a set up, but I don't know what a fair price would be. Anyone have an idea?
Video #10 Posted March 13, 2007 Well, they're gougeing on Shipping, but that actually seems quiet reasonable to me (especially complete as they appear to be) I know somebody will come back and slam me for saying they shipping is gouging, but hey, Priority Flat Rate $8.10 and not more than $1 or $2 for packing and handeling. Heh, still, I want one, but I have other priorities at the moment....
+remowilliams #11 Posted March 13, 2007 Only on my 18,000 foot long extension cables have I noticed any lag.

Franzman #12 Posted March 14, 2007 I know somebody will come back and slam me for saying they shipping is gouging, but hey, Priority Flat Rate $8.10 and not more than $1 or $2 for packing and handeling. Will the R/C joysticks box even fit in a Priority Flat Rate box??? I see the USPS now has one that's 11 x 8.5 x 5.5, but is that big enough?
Video #13 Posted March 14, 2007 (edited) Actually, I don't know, but I have had no problems with chopping the boxes in half and makeing a bigger box out of it, they still charge me the same either way, maybe their not supposed to?(the post office I mean) Of course, that's a little extra time and effort, but still, not more than 5 minutes added to the total packing time. And if you do it right, it's actually a much stronger box when you finish than the original boxes were. I've had to do this quiet often on recent auctions due to standard priority costing way more, and our local post office not haveing most of the flat rate boxes. Only on my 18,000 foot long extension cables have I noticed any lag. icon_razz.gif Actually, someone mentioned up top that electricity moves about 2/3 the speed of light, but I think it drops down to about 1/6 or 1/8 if it's going through metal (copper) Still, that's pretty damn fast. Breakpack #14 Posted March 14, 2007 I was wondering this about the Magic Box converter.I hooked up a Saturn joystick to the XBox and it seemed like it lagged, but maybe I'm dumb
