+stephena
It looks at the binary signature (md5sum), and compares it to the md5sum in the internal database. If two ROMs have the same md5sum, then both will be named the same thing according to the internal properties. Of course, if you attempt to name two different files with the same name, one will be overwritten (aka, deleted). So at the end of the process, it is indeed possible that there are some ROMs deleted. If Stella sees a ROM that isn't in the database, it doesn't touch it at all. So the only ROMs that are renamed (or removed) are ones that exist in the database. Wizzard
It happened to me that I had the binary identical files with different names and they were not merged into one. Just after I selected them in Stella and saw their metadata, after next Audit they were merged. Maybe some bug in Stella 6.0.2 for Linux? Wizzard
I am also curious why HC ROMS\BY ALPHABET directory also contains PAL games where we have BY ALPHABET (PAL) directory. Sorry if it was answered before.

Because the BY ALPHABET folder in the HC ROMS map contains all the original (first) releases and some of them were PAL.
Wizzard
I see that ROM Hunter's ROM does not contain the homebrews and seems it is OK. But what about Atari Flashback games? I have extracted the games from my FB X deluxe and seems there are some extra games (like 2005 Atari games, former homebrew). Would it be bad to include these games in the collection too? Also from other Flashbacks? I am trying to find the dumps from another Flashbacks, hope it is allowed to discuss it here. I also find the games from FBX that I cannot run in Stella 6.4 (Space Invaders and Frogger). I was also surprised that the dump contains 122 games, not 120. Rom Hunter
Still looking for these last third party PAL ROMs that have never been dumped: - Coco Nuts (Telesys) - Plate Mania (Home Vision) - Stargunner (Telesys) - Stronghold (CommaVid) - Topy (Home Vision) - X’Mission (Home Vision) The Home Vision ones are PAL originals. If anyone with a dumper has the chance to .bin these, please let me know! Home Vision announced (but never released) a game called Around the World, which could very well be the same game. If Home Vision got their hands on Crane's Motorcycle game is hard to tell (they did steal and even expanded Activision's Tennis, though). IMO only Crane can answer this. I must admit that the first time I played this game, it reminded me very much of Enduro. Perhaps the contents of Motocross can be compared to Enduro to see if any routines were copied? Very old post, but interesting to see this discussion pop up at the Lost Media Wiki: https://lostmediawiki.com/Untitled_Motorcycle_Games_(lost_Atari_2600_games_by_David_Crane;_existence_unconfirmed;_early_1980s) I assume (though I'd love to be wrong!) that this was never resolved, and that there aren't any "smoking gun" Crane-isms in the program code? That Home Vision expansion of Tennis is one of the coolest things in the entire Atari 2600 library, or at least the non-mainstream library! Rom Hunter
AFAIK there's no connection to Davids WIP motorcycle games and Sunteks Motocross. Also, it's still not proven that Around the World is the same game as Motocross. It has never been found and is still only a vaporware title shown in Home Vision ads.
Thomas Jentzsch
Maybe some people saw the Enduro like score and the River Raid like fuel displays and made a link to Activision?
Wickeycolumbus
Blast from the past... I still think the game has an Activision look to it. I think that this rumor stared with me, with no evidence other than the look of it. Its funny how they would write an article all these years later though. Would be interesting to see what Dave says about the game.

Maybe! On the forensic tip, are there any things that Crane consistently does in his Atari games that are unique to him -- signature bits of code, that kind of thing? Or, conversely, is there anything so horribly mis-programmed in Motocross that you find it difficult to believe someone as skilled as Crane would commit that particular sin? Thomas Jentzsch
I had a brief look, but I couldn't spot anything. Just a few vague indications that the code is not from Crane. E.g. the random number generation is unlike Pitfall! and the code is not very optimized. But that doesn't mean much.

atariUCLA24
Finally got my atarimax working to start dumping some of my interesting carts. I dumped 3 Carts, all NTSC multicarts (images at bottom). I used the atarimax so any 2 kb games I had to manually split, any of these games where I did this will have a (2) at the end of the file name. Let me know if I missed any or if I missed anything else, this is my first go at dumping games. Full rom sets, including all roms from each cart are attached. First cart I dumped was a Silver 16 in 1 "Multi Games" cart. Of the 16 games, 4 are showing as not exactly matching any rom in @Rom Hunter collection. All games on this cart are 2k and there isn't anything immediately different when playing them. The four games that didn't have exact matches are: Cowboy - Stampede Mathematics - Basic Math Millipede - Cosmic Swarm UFO - Space Jockey The second cart was a pink 4 in 1 with chinese writing on the end label. The three games that did not match were: left right - Crackpots graphic hack right left - Oink with no copyright right right - Thunderground with no copyright The third and last for now (I've spent enough time the last couple days) was a 32 in 1 Fotomania cart. Most of the games in this that don't have matches have "Mania", "Brasil", and/or "RJ" hacked in place of the rightful copyright. 21 games had no exact match: 1 (frostbite) 2 (jawbreaker) 4 (megamania) 5 (gas hog) 6 (keystone kapers) 8 (laser gates) 9 (pitfall) 10 (pac-man) 11 (mr. postman) 12 (seaquest) 13(demon attack) 15 (r. volleyball) 17 (planet patrol) 18 (crackpots) 19 (cosmic ark) 22 (river raid) 25 (atlantis) 26 (bobby goes home) 27 (chopper command) 30 (enduro) 31 (tennis) Take a look. When I get some more time I'll keep looking through the rest of my stuff. My collection. Thomas Jentzsch
Overall all new dumps are pretty close to other known ones (98-99% identical). In many cases only the logo has been exchanged. Edited January 7, 2021 by Thomas Jentzsch

Tempest
The top one is Planet Patrol by Spectravideo but the pallet looks wrong.
Wickeycolumbus
Yes, I think you guys are right. The pallet seems to be due to NTSC>PAL conversion, but the colors were not changed.
