Wireless Network Adapters?

Recommended Posts

Okay, i finally my internet connection back up, got my wireless router going, so i go to find a wireless adapter for the 360 and realize they're like $100. :(

My computer's in an upstairs office, my 360 in the living room downstairs. I have no way to physically wire the two together.

So i need to know, is there a cheaper, alternate adapter that will work with the 360? Or am i pretty much stuck paying $100 for something that was free inside my Wii? :(

I've heard conflicting reports about the original Xbox wireless adapter. Some people say it will work with the Xbox 360, while others insist that it won't. I'm trying to hunt down a definitive answer, as I too would like to find a wireless adapter for a fraction of the cost of the one designed specifically for the Xbox 360.

I did a bunch more research on this tonight and also can't come up with anything definitive. All i know at this point is that i'm not the only one who thinks the adapter probably shouldn't cost $100. :) I mean, i love my 360 and all, but damn. When Live has become one of their main selling points (if not THE main one), you'd think they'd want to make using it as painless a procedure as possible. Especially since notoriously internet-scoffing Nintendo has made it policy to throw WiFi capabilities in for free on their console AND portable...how much could that capability actually have COST Microsoft to implement? *sigh*

An ethernet bridge such as this one will work. I used a Linksys bridge on the XBox and then later for both the XBox and 360 for quite some time. It worked just fine. Eventually I decided I didn't want to switch it between them anymore so I picked up the 360 adapter and am quite pleased with how well it works.

Thanks, but that thing's still nearly $90.

Maybe i'm just too cheap to deserve the internet.... :(

Nah, just keep fighting the good fight. You're bound to come up with something that'll get the job done.

One thing I know for sure is that my old D-Link router won't work with the Xbox 360. Then again, I could never get that stupid thing to work properly on my computer, either. C'est la vie, I guess!

Lack of built-in wireless is one of my knocks against the 360. It should have had it from the start...

Just get a wireless bridge, as others have recommended. You want something that uses the ethernet adapter, not something that plugs into the USB jack (only the official $100 adapter will work on USB). The 360 will then see the connection as "wired" regardless of what's on the other side.

I have one of these for my Tivo, 360, XBOX1, etc. Works perfectly and has 4 ports, much better than the "gaming adapters" you see elsewhere.

If you don't want to spend $60 for that, get a linksys router that can be re-flashed with DD-WRT custom firmware (check wikipedia for model numbers). Even the v.6 can be flashed with the "micro" edition which is sufficient for running a simple wireless bridge. You can probably find one of these on Ebay for ~$20.

A free solution would be the La Fonera device from FON -- their page says it's $40 but there's usually a special out there to get a freebie. It's not easy to modify unless you're a bit of a unix geek, but it's capable of running the full DD-WRT featureset.

Avoid the Nyko Wireless net adapters. I don't think thay are for sale anymore but I got a set at a game store fairly cheaply a while back for use with my v1 Xbox. They did not cut it...

Wireless bridges and the original wireless adapter will both work, but the wireless adapter built for the 360 has the added advantage of knowing that you already are using the built-in 802.11 radio for the wireless controllers, and is set optimally to share the 2.4ghz band with it. (may have said that wrong, I don't claim to be a networking expert)

The wireless controllers are supposed to choose a frequency where there isn't interference, as do most wireless devices. I don't feel that that's much of a selling point of the official adapter -- the main thing it has going for it IMHO is that it's powered by the console's USB port, so there's no ugly wires or power bricks. A nice addition, but not worth the price premium to many people. It's better that they kept it external if they couldn't have kept the price down enough to build it in.

I'm using a second router set up as a range extender. It does cost around the same price as a network adapter, but since the 360 happens to be the closest indoor point to my treehouse, the range extender means I can work in the treehouse on my laptop this spring.

Ya know... when you stop and think about it, you can buy a WiFi DS Lite for $30 more than the MS Wireless Adapter. Strange but true....

A linksys with DD-WRT is great for many things. I am a huge Linux fan so, naturally, I love these routers.
