+Cobra Kai #2 Posted March 18, 2007 There's instructions on this forum somewhere on how to make one yourself. I did it and mine looks EXACTLY like the one in the auction.

"Controller is based on the unreleased prototype Atari controller produced in 1983." * thread moved *
MrRetroGamer #5 Posted March 19, 2007 It even says that in the auction description... "Controller is based on the unreleased prototype Atari controller produced in 1983." It does say so in the description, but the title is misleading since it clearly states it is a prototype in the title.
TomBrazil #6 Posted March 20, 2007 I just built one. It seems quite good. I wonder if there's a demand for those babies, maybe I could build some for resale.
Albert #7 Posted March 20, 2007 I just built one. It seems quite good. I wonder if there's a demand for those babies, maybe I could build some for resale. The 5200 version of Castle Crisis can take advantage of 5200 Paddles, so there's probably a decent market for them. There are a few other games that work with the 5200 paddles also, such as Kaboom! and Super Breakout. I built one myself, and documented the process with pictures in Game Console Hacking. The mod isn't too difficult if you have plenty of donor 5200 controllers and 2600 paddles. ..Al

Albert #9 Posted March 20, 2007 The mod isn't too difficult if you have plenty of donor 5200 controllers and 2600 paddles.Which pot does the mod use? You transplant a pot from the 2600 paddle controller to the 5200. It works quite well, almost as if the 5200 controller was designed with this in mind (which is certainly possible, given the existence of an Atari 5200 paddle prototype). ..Al

That's too bad -- I have several extra 2600 paddle knobs, but I save every extra 2600 paddle pot I can get to fix other paddle controllers.

CellPhoneShack has 1meg pots for like 3 bucks each and they are a commonly stocked item even in the smaller outlet stores if you need them.

I don't have a machine shop to trim them to the right size & shape -- I tried it once by hand but that was a miserable failure.

My local one has the plastic shaft ones and all you need to cut them to proper size is a good sharp razor blade or a ginsu knife.
