neotokeo2001 #1 Posted March 27, 2007 How reliable are the new 360's that are being sold since the new year? Any new owners having the red ring of death?
MCHufnagel #2 Posted March 27, 2007 I bought ours the last week of November for Christmas and have been using it since Christmas day. There haven't been any problems with it at all and I'm quite happy with it.
King_Salamon #3 Posted March 27, 2007 I'm curious about the quality of the newer systems too. I am currently in the market for a new console and I like what the 360 has to offer in terms of games and all but the problems with the systems has me leaning towards a PS3. I did pick up Just Cause for the 360 tonight as it was $19 at the store and that was a deal for what appears to be a sandbox title of some sort. Seems like a GTA game but much more interesting. Any opinions on this one? Back to the topic... if the newer systems (say the new bundles available in Canada - with Call of Duty 3 in them) are of a better quality, then I'd be happy to know that. I love this period of time where I choose a new system... such fun. It's time I stepped into the next generation of gaming.
rxd #4 Posted March 27, 2007 I got mine around Christmas. No problems at all.
King_Salamon #5 Posted March 27, 2007 Another thing I wonder about is the way some people treat their consoles. I heard a lot of problems with the launch PS2s and I still have mine and it's still going strong.
spacecadet #6 Posted March 27, 2007 Another thing I wonder about is the way some people treat their consoles. I heard a lot of problems with the launch PS2s and I still have mine and it's still going strong. I still have my launch PS2's going strong too. But there are too many reports of multiple failures of the 360 among fairly respected people in the gaming press that obviously know how to take care of a system and also haven't had the same problem with other systems. It's not just a case of an undeserved bad reputation. It's the main reason I haven't bought an Xbox 360 also. There were just recently some long threads on Engadget and Kotaku about this and even people with newer consoles in those threads were having failures on both their post-Christmas retail and replacement systems. So it seems like it's still a problem.
Gabriel #7 Posted March 27, 2007 I have a 360 I bought on New Years... 2006. I haven't had any problems with it.
Lord Helmet #8 Posted March 27, 2007 I bought my 360 last October...and got a red ring of death last weekend. I was able to unplug everything and get it to boot up correctly later that day, but now games freeze up at random times. I'll be calling MS when I get home from work today
CGQuarterly #9 Posted March 27, 2007 I'm sure that this has been said before, but often times the system freezes up because the power supply overheats. If you have yours stuffed between your entertainment center and your wall on the carpet, or sitting behind your 360 getting hot air blown over it, you are increasing your chance of having the system freeze up. My system froze up on me twice (no rings of death, though), so I moved the power supply out from behind the system and put it next to and slightly behind my TV. There, it is sitting on a flat hard surface and is not getting the exhaust from the 360. Haven't had a problem since then. Chris
Lord Helmet #10 Posted March 27, 2007 Hmmm, I'll try moving my power supply to a more ventilated location. I sure hope I don't have to send my 360 back...I don't want to go without it for 2 weeks
ewing92 #11 Posted March 27, 2007 my friend got his for christmas, and then January 15th he had to send it to M$ due to the ring of death.
moycon #12 Posted March 27, 2007 (edited) I recieved my 360 around march of 2006. I noticed it would always freeze up in the same spot on PDZ, I tried another brand new copy of PDZ and it also froze when playing. I hadnt really had any issues with other games, altho I do seem to remember Burnout freezing a couple times, that wasnt a constant issues as I had played Burnout for hours and hours mostly freeze free. Still I was upset I had spent $400 and couldn't play PDZ so I returned the unit to MS shortly after I got it and they sent me another, took about two weeks. So far I have been good. *knock on wood* Edited March 27, 2007 by moycon
xenomorpher #13 Posted March 28, 2007 My 360 got the infamous three red LED error code in January. Oddly enough it was manufactured in January. Thankfully one of the members here worked for MS and had them ship me out a box. I got it back pretty quickly, but it seem to take forever since I used it everyday pretty much. So far nothing big is wrong with it. The disc tray gets stuck almost all the time, but I lightly push it and it opens up well. Its the only console I've had something happen to it. Other than that I'm pretty pleased with it. Only wish MS would make them more reliable.
Scumdogg #14 Posted March 28, 2007 We got our 360 in October, and i have yet to even have it freeze up on me, much less do anything more horrifying. And when i first got Oblivion i'd play the thing eight hours a day sometimes, then my wife would come home and play Viva Pinata for 4 hours. Cases of the uber-reliable Wii freezing up on me during a quick game of Wii Play? Eight.
EricDeLee #15 Posted March 28, 2007 Here is case in point.... All of these issues... and yet half the people that come to the PS3 boards to say "the PS3 Sucks" forget that they have a useless brick sitting at home. 4-5 people in this small thread has had issues. hmmm...........
Scumdogg #16 Posted March 28, 2007 I seem to recall a few thousand bricks being sold with the PS3 logo on them too. That's unfortunately the norm for new consoles these days. I know very, very few people that made it more than a year on a launch-window Playstation or PS2 either, so maybe you shouldn't take discussions like this as an invitation to troll. EricDeLee #17 Posted March 28, 2007 I see them elsewhere... so I am welcome to troll if I choose. That's all I needed to say. And show 'proof' of your so call PS3s bricking like the 360. Show where they have had the issues that the 360 has had.
Lord Helmet #18 Posted March 28, 2007 I have heard stories of all 3 systems freezing up. My Wii has frozen up a couple of times, and I have seen a frozen PS3 at Target. Seems that all 3 new systems have their problems.

AtariJr #20 Posted March 28, 2007 (edited) yea, ive had my wii freeze once on excite truck.. but it wasnt perminantly broken. yea, ive seen a frozen ps3 playing the motor storm video at walmart. it was really annoying, cause , like the wii when it froze, the sound got froze, so it was making a constant loud annoying single pitch sound... and no employee around was there to reset it. back on topic... im curious about getting a 360 as well, as in a few months, many sony exclusives that i care about will be on this system instead/as well. however, im VERY afraid of the chips. when are the new 65 nm chips coming out? i thought these were supposed to be implemented already.. ah well. also, how bad is this thing as far as heat issues. i heard it gets really really hot. it would be ventilated, but if i had the system, it would be near other systems... i woudlnt want it baking nearby systems :-/ Edited March 28, 2007 by AtariJr

The Wii in standby is actually much hotter, as are the discs coming out of it in standy. The PS3 doesn't get hot either, but its great cooling system throws a ton of heat out the right hand side, so no other console can live there.

Well there is a difference between a system getting hot (bad) and a system heating up the room by properly cooling itself (good). If a room is small enough and without enough air ventilation, sure it'll get heated up. My PS3 after days of full tilt grid computing ([email protected]) was just warm to the touch, but that baby has got a massive cooling system that throws lots 'o' hot air - in a restricted space you'd certainly get heated up! The reason the Wii won't heat it's surrounding in standby is that it turns its fan off and sits there and soaks in its own heat (bad).

A Wii soaking in its own heat is bad? The nudists were right! Looks like I won't have to worry about any of these 360 problems since the money I was going to use to buy a 360 will have to be used to replace my computer. TuzenTCA #25 Posted March 29, 2007 I think I have already said this. I got my xbox in January from someone who took care of it, and they bought it at launch. Nothing is wrong with my xbox, and I have only had it freeze one time, I had sat some clothes on top of it, and didn't realize it. Well i went to play GoW online, and it froze when I went to host a room, it said that it could not read the disc, but I knew the disc was good because it was brand new. I removed the clothes and found the system to be hot as hell. I turned it off for about 15 mins put the power supply at the same level of the system about 6 inches from its left side if laying big side down, and it has always done fine for me.
