iguana #26 Posted April 3, 2007 I had a 2600 when it first came out. I was 8. It was the last game We bought till I graduated college and bought a friend's NES. I loved my Atari, but I did not have many games until after the crash when I bought bunches of them for like a buck at some closeout store. I remember I had 2 good friends one had the Intelli which I just loved. I thought it was the greatest game ever (I still like playing mine now) and another had the Colecovision, But he ended up playing a lot of my 2600 games on it as he had the adaptor and not many games. I did like Venture on it though. I was never envious until NES came out and I really wanted to get one.
Paranoid #27 Posted April 3, 2007 Heh. I think this is a generational thing... I had no interest in the NES for a long while after it came out, and I thought of it as a kiddie-console for my Niece's generation (she was born in 1977). It wasn't until I sat down one day and got hooked on SMBros that I had to have it. But that was all the NES ever really became to me... it was a multi-SMB platform for the 3 main releases. All the other games... Rygar, Castlevania, etc. etc... just didn't do anything for me. Same thing with the SNES. I bought it for SMW. Then someone I knew got a Genesis, and I got hooked on Sonic 1... and it was the same thing there. Other than Sonic 1, the rest of the titles left me flat. I think I stayed away from consoles after that until I got a $100 gift certificate from an employer for Amazon and got a PS-1... I played some GT-1 on that... and it sat until my Brother In Law turned me on to Tony Hawk Skating 1. Since Tony Hawk Skating 1, I don't think there has been anything innovative and catchy that I've experienced. Lately all I buy is the GTA series... and I haven't felt compelled that way since San Andreas. I've got a feeling that if I ever get any hands-on time with a Wii, I'll want one. But I can't see the PS3 or the X360 offering anything that is so new and different that I get hooked and have to have it.

To me, consoles like PS3 and X360 are for players who want the experience of playing games on a $2,000 hot-rodded gaming PC... ...without having to spend $2,000 on a hot-rodded gaming PC. Paranoid #29 Posted April 3, 2007 Hmnnnn... I dunno if you need to drop $2000 to accomplish the kind of frame-rates and processing power that a PS3 or XBox360 are producing. I'm sure you can't do it for $600, so I see your point, roughly, though.

I'm sure you can't do it for $600, so I see your point, roughly, though. I'm talking about a true monster gaming PC with the latest video cards and Blue-Ray DVD (like the PS3 has)... I guess I have something like this in mind... (one of the lower-priced AlienWare PCs, actually...)
Paranoid #31 Posted April 4, 2007 Yeah, I know what you mean... custom "mod" cases with skins and all that... I guess the thing is that the PS3 and XBox 360 appeals to the casual gamer who doesn't have the DIY experience to build their own custom gaming PC. Because you don't have to spend Alienware prices to get Alienware performance. Makes those two machines a real weird niche, if you ask me. Too expensive as consoles, not really very powerful as PCs or media entertainment centers...
lord_mike #32 Posted April 4, 2007 My next door neighbor had the Colecovision. I really liked it! It was quite cool... of course, not having any gaming system of my own at the time, anything video was cool. My favorite game was Venture, by far... The controller was rather... well.. unusual... but, I was just happy to have relatively easy access to a game console. Prior to my neighbor's Coleco acquisition, I had to visit friends miles away to be able to play home video games. Having access right next door was very exciting! Thanks, Mike
Lord Thag #33 Posted April 4, 2007 My friend had a coleco as a kid, and I loved the DK and DKJr games on it. I had way more 2600 games than he did (thanks to a fire sale), so it was a nice trade off. He'd play 2600 at my house, and I would play the CV at his. I got a CV a few years later in Jr High, and I played the hell out of it until I traded it off too another friend for a 7800 and a pile of games. The CV has a lot better looking games, but (for the most part) they are standard arcade ports. The 2600 has a lot more original and unique games, so I think the systems compliment each other well. These days, I find I do not play the CV as much as the other systems from the era. The 2600 is still the best (and fastest) 'twitch' game system, IMO. I also prefer the 5200/8-bits over the CV for the arcade stuff, and the Intellivision for it's deep, 'thinking man's' library. The CV just doesn't seem to get played as much. Part of it is because the damn systems are so glitchy (I've gone through three of them). Also, I don't think the library is all that great. Don't get me wrong, there are quite a few stellar titles, but there is also a lot of chud. I really dislike (with the exception of Beamrider, Hero, and River Raid) the Activision titles, as they are ugly as sin. The controllers are splint inducing as well, making long playing session difficult. Still, the twenty or thirty titles worth playing really are excellent games. My personal favorites are Spy Hunter, Frenzy, Jumpman and Gateway to Apshai, the latter of which is friggin' HUGE for an ancient action RPG.
Recycled #34 Posted April 4, 2007 I slobbered over the ads in Electronic Games for the CV at the time. I totally ignored the cool stuff for the vcs as a result. I finally got a cv a few years ago. It's broken...but the light sixer marches on.
