VIC-20 UMI cart thickness issue

Recommended Posts

Any other VIC-20 enthusiasts out there? I've recently run into a situation that has prompted me to post a message and see if anyone else has experienced it. I've just recently started growing my VIC cart collection, and a couple of carts I've recently obtained are "Satellites & Meteorites" and "Meteor Run", both by UMI. These carts differ from the standard off-white Commodore carts in that they are beige in color, and also at least 25% thicker! To insert either of these carts, I literally have to wedge it into the opening and pretty forcefully plug it into the connector. Using force is a bad thing in itself, but the fit is so tight, I actually ripped the label on "Meteor Run" getting it inserted.

What's up with this? Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Does my model VIC have an unusually narrow cartridge opening, or were UMI carts notoriously just a little too thick?

Any insight would be appreciated! TIA!

I think it's just the carts. I've got a UMI cart as well and you practically have to hammer it into the cart slot.

Yeah the UMIs are thicker and do fit tight in the slot. One reason for getting a cart port expander...

OK - at least it's not just me. I may try shaving the case around the cart port opening. I can keep my eyes open for a cart port expander. In the meantime - some of the UMI games are worth more than the machine itself. :D If I can make the opening even just 1mm wider, I'll probably be in good shape. I'd rather shave some plastic off the machine than have the machine shave the labels off my games!

Thanks for the input, guys.
