Ever really really WANT to like a game, but can't?

Recommended Posts

Yeah, happens all the time. Everyone will be hyping the game and going on and on about how great it is, then you give it a try and you're like "what the hell, I don't even enjoy this"! LOL :)

Happens to me with fighting games and first person shooters all the time. And then I sometimes love games that everyone hates. I goes both ways. Hahaha

I think, though, a mature gamer realizes that almost every popular game is good in some way, even if it just totally fails to click for you.

Like... tony hawk games. Just do nuthin' for me. (And leave out the biggest part of the skating I observe in real life, that of chasing after your board after you miss a trick). But I don't think they're bad games because of it, or question the taste of people who dig the genre.

Well, Here's a few for me.

Resedent Evil (any, it hasn't changed any) The game at the time had awesome graphics, a great atmosphere about it, decent sound, and.....Your dude controlls like a remot controll robot, is animated like a zombie, and you use like 3 different buttons just to draw, then fire your gun. Top that with the fact that modern systems ANY modern system, has 2 analog sticks, and you really wonder why A) you can't simply push the stick in the direction you want to go (up and left to move up and left) and B) why you can't shoot a different direction from the one your faceing. Game had great potential, but the controll simply sucked. I got into it a bit more on the game.com ( ! ) than I ever did on ANY of the consoles.

Aliens VS Predator (everybody apparently loves this game) It's got decent high res graphics (though sacrifices characture count and draw distance to do it) And then...it really seems like a toned down Wolfenstein or something. I don't know what it is, as I said, everybody loves it, so I try to like it, but I simply can't find anything really to like about it.

Quake. (the original one) I never understanded the love for this game. Back then, it really seemed just a slower milder version of Doom. It was cool (for it's time) to have all the guns and charactures animated with a Poly engine, rather than a sprite/raycasting engine. But once you got over the "cool, it's more 3D ish" part of the game, as I said, it was just a slower version of doom. It always seemed likea cheap ripoff to me.

Zelda (the 3D ones) I really loved Zelda, all the 2 D ones were great (though for the 2nd one for the NES< I didn't really care for that) But I loved this game on the GameBoy, Color, and Super Nintendo, well, I expected it to be just a 3D version of the same great gameplay. There's just something about it that don't feel right though, somehow. It's like they stripped the objective out of the game in the transition to 3D. I don't know, it obviously has one, as people have played and beaten it, I just played it and got to the "I'm bored" stage to fast and go back to one of the Gameboy ones instead.

Grand Theft Auto (any, but more aimed at the 3D ones) I probably never will see the appeal in playing a game with NO objective. I'm not sure why people do. I want to like it, there seems to be a lot of stuff I want to do in the game. but it's another of the ones, I play a while, and then say "WTF? If I wanted this, I wouldn't be on my ass in front of a video game anywyas  " ) I think the problem is, I need at least some kind of hint of a path to follow. I actually liked Morrowind for instance, which had the freechoice do whatever gameplay, but did have a clear objective to follow when you got around to it also.

That's about it for me.

Return to Castle Wolfenstien and Tekken 1 to 3. Completed Tekken 2 once and said to myself, why did I play this? I then promptly switched on my Saturn and went back to Street Fighter Alpha. Sure It aint 3D but its a hell of a lot better

HALO

Can't stand that game... or games like it.

I'm also struggling with the Jaguar right now. I have been trying to FORCE myself to like it... yet it is not going so well right now. Even with 35 games or so, I'm thinking about giving up on the ol' boy and use the money elsewhere. Anyone need a Factory Sealed Atari Karts? LOL

There are objectives in GTA-- check out the various strategy guides to see a few of them. It can be a really linear game if you choose to play it that way, and choosing missions is similar to that in nearly every RPG out there-- an NPC will make a request, then you try to fulfill it.

Metroid Prime - I've tried on four separate occasions to get into that game, but... it just doesn't do anything for me at all. Normally if I get a "meh" feeling for a game I'll just put it down and never pick it up again, but I feel so bad about not liking MP that I keep trying.

And I still don't like it.

Harvest Moon (GC)

Animal Crossing (GC)

Doom

Civilization III

Zelda: Wind Walker (maybe I'll be able to get into it next try...)

Ultima V

Super Mario Sunshine

Final Fantasy III (DS)

and so on...

Not really "classic" games, but these jump out:

Sonic Adventure. I tried several times to get into it, but the sloppy control, buggy levels and "what the heck do I do now" design left me cold. It looked nice, but I just couldn't get into it.

GTA: Vice City. It was fun for the first hour or two, but then when I had to beat cops with a baseball bat to get past a mission it left me a little too disturbed to enjoy it. That's not what I play games for. There's enough of that stuff happening in real life. I want someone to make a fantasy-based open-world GTA clone. =)

Guitar Hero. I've been playing guitar for almost 20 years now. It was fun for an hour or two. But after blowing through story mode in normal and most of hard, I felt like I could either play the game for hours trying to memorize the timing to get perfects, or I could spend less time learning the songs "for real" and make better use of my time.

Ballblazer. Any platform. It's debatable weither or not I ever wanted to like this game, but no version of it was ever at all interesting to me.

Megaman Battle Network 3 (blue version) for GBA. Yuck.

2600 football. I wanted so bad for this to be a good game. Trash.

2600 Texas Chainsaw Massacre. *shakes head sadly*

I really don't enjoy 2D Mario-style platformers. Jump, hop, jump, hop, etc. ad nauseum. I've never understood how they can be so popular.

Guys, "games I don't like and think are over-rated" is not the same thing as "games you really wanted to like but couldn't"

No offense... but I look at it this way: You are an adult. This is a game. You should be able to distinguish reality vs a situation in a game.

How is it any different for someone like myself who is a soldier playing a game like Medal of Honor or Call of Duty? Wasn't there an older game where you were actually the Nazis and your goal was to keep the us troops from storming the bunkers?

Either way... it is just a game. I can't stand when people use the "there's enough of that going on in the world today" line against a video game. It a little Jack Thompson-ish

Forgive me... but that's my opinion. I repect that you made yours... there's mine

Actually, I think it is. I've tried to play those 2D platformers, I've tried to like them, but I just can't.

Turrican for Genesis. The controls are overly complicated, and the continue feature next to worthless. You have to beat 2 bosses before the continue will not put you back at the beginining of the game.

I wasn't just referring to your post, but no, it's not the same, at least not in all cases.

This has gotten me cruxified before, but I'll say it again. I've just never "gotten" Yar's Revenge. This is one of THE classic 2600 games, but it always leaves me bored and cold. Avoid the dot/cannonshot, race up and nibble/shoot at the wall, repeat, shoot and blow up cannon. I just never understood why this is so popular as I'm usually bored in a few minutes.

Obviously I can distinguish between fantasy and reality, that has nothing to do with it. I don't think there's anything wrong with people playing GTA games. It's a free country. Some people like Friday 13th movies, too. Good for them. Some people like Soap Operas. Whoopee. I *personally* don't enjoy the "be a criminal" setting. I never in any way, shape or form said GTA type games shouldn't be made, or that people that like them are somehow "bad." I personally LOVE the Resident Evil games, and they're full of violent scenes. I like the gameplay, and I like the zombie theme. I love Mario games, some people can't stand them because they look too "kiddie." It's just a personal taste, and that's the difference between not liking "crime" games and liking WWII games.

A post on the 7800 thread made me think of another: Dark Chambers. I've tried to like it several times, but it just doesn't do it for me. Too slow, and too carpal tunnel-inducing.

No problem man... I understand. I see a lot of people use it as an excuse though... but... it's just a game. If I'm not mistaken... don't you shoot a cop in Resident Evil... a zombie cop of sorts?

I tried Final Fantasy 2 on the SNES, hoping I'd like it after playing Mystic Quest to wet my feet on a Final Fantasy game, and got to the point where I didn't like having to run into mysterious battles with monsters out of nowhere. Same thing with Final Fantasy Legend 3 for the Gameboy (which I bought for play on the SNES with the Super Gameboy adapter), Final Fantasy 7 for the Playstation, and Quest 64 for Nintendo 64.

ok, im going to add another.

Wipeout... any wipeout on the playstation and saturn (ps2 game was alright). I really want to like it... i LOVE futuristic racers. In fact F-zero i think ruined wipeout for me. i didnt get into wipeout till after f-zero X on the 64 came out. i think wipeout just felt too damn slow. and my memory is foggy on the psone versions, but i think the control on the saturn game is horrible. you just hit the damn walls.. i even tried playing it Gran Tourismo style and breaking and stuff and i still slide into turns.. pathetic. Makes me feel better about it being one of the very few saturn games i dont have a case for.

Castlevania (forgot if i already mentioned this). I tried people.. all of the 2d ones i tried so hard to like this, but i cant...

The first Need For Speed. I played Need for Speed II SE on my pc first, and i just cant go back. In fact, every single need for speed since II isnt need for speed for me. The first game while arcady has more realisitic feel to it, and the others to the modern ones just dont have that sense of insane wakiness to it... i mean, where is the trex level driving a school bus flying 70 feet in he air... boo.

Gunvalkry on the xbox... i really wanted to liek this game, and sucked up the first lke 5 levels.. and havent played it since.

ill post more when i think of them

Haha, yeah. Actually, when a Kay Bee store was closing out a bunch of stuff dirt cheap several years ago, I picked up the RE2 Zombie Cop action figure, along with a couple of other RE things. He featured "exploding brain action!" =)

Yeah, I could see that especially when the game had such a great soundtrack and cool things going on from a visual design point of view.
