Ever really really WANT to like a game, but can't?

Recommended Posts

5th on resident evil.. i never got the game really. i got RE4 on the gc when it came out because of the hype, but i honestly thought the control was too sluggish and restricting.. you couldnt run away from the zombies, and your shots were too slow.

I felt that way at first, but once you upgrade your guns, learn a few key combat moves and where the acceleration button is, all is good.

Resident Evil 4 and I have a weird love-hate relationship. There are parts where I think it's incredible and one of the greatest games I've ever played. They are, unfortunately, spoiled by a couple of cheap-ass levels where I thought they should have canned the programmers. (ie. that first fight with Krauser where you randomly click buttons).

Ballblazer. Any platform. It's debatable weither or not I ever wanted to like this game, but no version of it was ever at all interesting to me.

Was this against the computer or against a friend? For me, I needed to play against a friend to dig it.

Either way I thought it was bad. I'd much rather play 2600 pele's soccer =)

Now that was a fun game. I loved it as a kid, mainly because I was an indoor soccer fan. I always wanted that game but never got it.

But on the sports theme, another game I really wanted to like but couldn't was 7800 Winter Games. I got that game one year for my birthday after great anticipation, then my 7800 blew up when I tried to play it. Meanwhile I played several Epyx games on my friend's C64 and loved them. Maybe 6 months later I finally got a new 7800 and tried the game. And it was just dull compared to everything I played on the C64. Only 4 events, and the sound was horrible. I've since learned that my version had even less sound than it was supposed to have, but even the "good" version isn't very good. The missing national anthems especially bugged me. I played this game many times but never was able to enjoy it as much as I wanted to.

Quake II.

Quake and Quake III are great... but something's really missing with the middle one. I could never get into it, it didn't 'feel' right.

I should add on the retro front: it broke my heart to beat Surround's AI in 2 minutes flat. Absolutely broke my heart.

Quake didn't have much satanic symbols, gothic looking structures or images of sacrifice.

The Warriors(PS2)

I loved the movie. It's a cult classic. A Rockstar-fronted game based on the movie? Sounds like a winner.

I rented it(thankfully didn't buy it) and it was incredibly difficult. I set the game to the easy level, and found myself frustrated and overwhelmed. The game manual is a whopping 50 pages long!(well-documented game).

There was a point in one mission where 5 cops were beating me up like I was Rodney King. I couldn't seem to pass the easiest of missions. One mini-game I got hung up on was the lock picking segment. You have to wait for a ring to be lined up, then click. This goes for 3 times, and the 3rd ring spins real fast. With gangs & cops after you, I could never get the timing right.

I could never get the brick-throwing segment of a mission + stealth right, so I always failed. Other parts of missions left me wandering around figuring out what to do.

The game is 100% faithful to the movie and goes beyond it without going overboard. But the missions to me were just dang near impossible. Like the title says, I wanted to get into it like I would get into a GTA game, but the difficulty stonewalled me.

I wanted to like Fight for Life on the jag, the Graphics were great but the gameplay and animation blows monkey chunks.. the fighters walk in baby steps and matches take upto 20 mins to beat since you do so little damage.. apparently the real version of the game does exist lol.. the designers gave Atari a crippled copy out of revenge for laying them off and with holding their pay for all the work they did.

Bangai-o (DC) - Can not stand the controls, the game just feels extremely awkward to me at all times.

Guardian Heroes (Saturn) - Starts off good but the game gets really, really boring after a few stages. The enemies have way too much health in the later stages and the boss fights take way too long.

Ogre Battle (SNES) - Tried getting into this game many times. The reputation meter is total bullshit. I can't stand how the game penalizes you for leveling up too much or making attack parties that are too strong. You always have to try to keep your level low and just scrape by all the time. It's frustrating and for me ruins what would otherwise be a perfectly enjoyable game.

Hoshigami (PS1) - Pretty much just copy and paste what I wrote for Ogre Battle.

!!!!

Even after you change it to the ABXY control scheme??

If you do that, I feel like it plays like Smash TV on SNES or anything else that uses buttons as a second control pad.

It has a slightly odd feel, w/ the guys thrusters, don't know if that's what you dislike.

I'm surprised though, this game feels great to me.

Mine:

Zelda (series): For some reason I still buy these games. I've never liked a single one. The GBA version I bought was probably the best, because my expectations were a little lower. I just could never get more than about 5 hours into any of the others before losing interest.

Mario (series): Same deal. I was a Sonic guy when I was a kid and still am... Mario is just too slow for me, and I don't like too many strategic elements in platform games. If I want strategy, I will buy a strategy game.

Metroid (series): Really same as Mario above, but with the addition of tedious back-tracking.

Come to think of it, I guess I don't much like Nintendo games. I've tried. I own most of the big ones, and I still buy new ones when they come out, because everybody always says "oh, THIS one fixes all the problems from the last one!" Which suggests to me that other people must feel the same way and are also trying to convince themselves that they like these games. The only Mario game I haven't bought was Mario Sunshine, which was the only one to get middling reviews... so I can't even imagine how bad it must really be.

Some other individual titles:

Final Fantasy VIII, IX and XII: I loved FFVII, so I actually bought the FFVIII import because I couldn't wait, and I was literally going to try to learn Japanese to finish it. But it was awful! Probably the worst magic/battle system of any RPG ever. And a really stupid story. I did like the ending, but that's about it. As for FFIX, I never really got sucked into the story, I didn't like the design style and I eventually got to a point where I got frustrated with the random battles (seemed like there were too many, for some reason) and I gave up. Similar story with FFXII - I never really got frustrated but I didn't like the Euro-inspired visual style and the story never grabbed me. I may go back to it at some point, but it's been about 6 months since I last played it and I'm only about 20 hours in.

There are more, but I don't want to drone on and on.
