I have several 2600 (7), 5200 (2) and ColecoVision (1) systems modified for s-video output and there simply is no comparison. Even a composite video output mod will look much better than using RF output. I have so many systems modified as I use them hooked up to Commodore 1702s and other displays at the various game shows I attend..

Al mentioned Commodore...my 1701 has luma and chroma jacks on the back. Do those have something to do with S video, or have I smoked too much crack?

Yes, it's the same except without the nice s-video connector.

Pitfall is a good game to test color; Air Sea battle / Target Fun in B/W mode is a good game to test general picture clarity / luma consistency

 

Overall, I'd say they did a pretty good job for you.

That may be true, but 98% of all home mods I've seen don't have anywhere near the video quality.

...and besides, you're completely missing one of the most obvious points. It's a lot more entertaining to do it yourself. You even learn quite a bit in the process (I did).

Speaking of the CD4050, is the CD4050 chip in that mod a chip that you need to buy or one that's already in the 2600? I've just started looking at doing this mod and I wasn't sure on what that chip actually was. I think I follow everything else but I'm lost on that chip...

The mods using that chip intend for you to add it, but 6-switchers and Juniors have one in the console (and thus could get similar results from a simpler mod).
