8-Bit FAQ link

I noticed that the FAQ on www.faq.org and the first returns from Google point to an older one.

In case folks need to locate the "Current" one:

http://www.cs.uu.nl/wais/html/na-dir/atari-8-bit/faq.html

And the link to the comp.sys.atari.8bit one with links to other FAQs

Is there anyway we could get this as a sticky, or perhaps even the FAQ posted here and updated?

I don't know how things become sticky here, but...

I've always preferred people link to or mirror the latest versions of the FAQs, rather than posting standalone copies of them elsewhere. Static copies get old and obsolete fast.

As you know, nowadays my preferred web mirror for the 8-bit Atari FAQs is at http://www.cs.uu.nl/wais/html/na-dir/atari-8-bit/.html .

That Utrecht University site still reliably mirrors the mother Usenet FAQ FTP archive at MIT, which keeps the latest comp.sys.atari.8bit newsgroup FAQs in several locations:

- ftp://rtfm.mit.edu/pub/usenet-by-group/comp.sys.atari.8bit/

- ftp://rtfm.mit.edu/pub/usenet-by-hierarch...sys/atari/8bit/

- ftp://rtfm.mit.edu/pub/faqs/atari-8-bit/

The advantage of the Utrecht University site over the source MIT site is that web addresses are turned into hyperlinks. And it's over http rather than ftp.

More than you wanted to know, probably? :)

Dear fellow Atari 8-bit computers fans, the new FAQ has just been published.

PDF versions in A4 and US Letter size are available, for printing or reading on a tablet.
It's amazing to think that next year it will be 30 years since this FAQ was first published!
You can get it here: http://www.atari800xl.eu/faq/atari-8bit-faq.html

I've primarily been referencing the copy on your own site for the latest and greatest - are other sources actually updated sooner?

Thanks!  https://mcurrent.name/atari-8-bit/faq.txt  is indeed always the very latest latest posted version.

There is only a brief delay between when I post a new edition and when nicely-formatted, content-identical versions of it appear at http://www.atari800xl.eu/ .

And the latest version of the FAQ (June 28, 2021) is here:

.TXT format https://mcurrent.name/atari-8-bit/faq.txt (from Michael's site, author of the FAQ)

.PDF A4 & US Letter format http://www.atari800xl.eu/faq/atari-8bit-faq.html (from my site)

OMG! 500+ pages?! ?How did I miss this one all these years?

I'll have to start reading through this. I'm sure there's tons of great information in there.

Thanks for the links to the most recent versions.

Yes, here: https://mcurrent.name/atari-8-bit/vendev.txt

Is it still useful in 2021?

I would say it's very much a useful thing, because in some ways we're spoiled for choice these days.  There's a ton going on on both the hardware and software fronts, and a good chunk of our traditional vendors are still in business.  It's a good snapshot of where things stand currently, and may help in the future with figuring out who sold what.  It's also a good way to quickly be able to locate alternatives if a preferred vendor is out of stock or unable to locate an item.

Keep it going ;-)

If it's still maintained and updated it's very useful. On several occasions I've been going through it and realized there was something new I missed.

The latest version of the Atari 8-bit FAQ (June 26, 2022) is here:
.TXT format https://mcurrent.name/atari-8-bit/faq.txt (from Michael's site, author of the FAQ)
.PDF A4 & US Letter format http://www.atari800xl.eu/faq/atari-8bit-faq.html (from my site)
And, yes, it takes a couple of days (this time, 1 week) to create a new nice-looking PDF based on the updated TXT ;-)
