walter_J64bit #1 Posted April 13, 2007 I have one but I haven't installed it yet, anyone here have one running in there ST? Are the SIMMs that work with Xtra-RAM are the same SIMMs that used in PC's? If so I'm looking at a 4MB 520ST when I get the PC's SIMMs.
ppera #2 Posted April 13, 2007 I have one but I haven't installed it yet, anyone here have one running in there ST? Are the SIMMs that work with Xtra-RAM are the same SIMMs that used in PC's? If so I'm looking at a 4MB 520ST when I get the PC's SIMMs. I remember that I made upgrade that soldered 72pin simm socket in ST, and used there 4MB RAM modul. Simm modules are same as in PC, but you can not use all types. Only FP RAM ones. EDO is not good for ST. How to know which is which? It writes not FP or EDO on modules, but EDO usually has some addit. small chips on modules (3.3V regulators). FP has only RAM chips and small capacitors. In any case, putting EDO in Atari will not destroy anything, just machine will not work. Same stays for 30 pin Simm modules. (But for 4 MB, you need 4 such modules). Bripilot #3 Posted April 13, 2007 For the XTra-Ram ST, yes... standard 30 pin PC simms will work, 80ns if I recall is preferred. I don't think you can use 4MB simms though, only 1MB. I also don't remember if you need parity simms or non-parity... sorry.
walter_J64bit #4 Posted April 13, 2007 Ok this 30 Pin SIMM's thing is evil here are the I'm looking at! Is this what I need?
Gunstar #5 Posted April 14, 2007 (edited) Ok this 30 Pin SIMM's thing is evil here are the I'm looking at! Is this what I need? Yes, those are the type you need. I have some like that and some that are almost twice as tall, as the chips are vertical instead of horizontal. I think the taller ones might be the EDO type ppera is refering too. I don't know. I was going to try them out in my Mega STE, but I never did as I had more than four of the shorter type. If they are the EDO type, it's probably just as well that I didn't try them. ppera #6 Posted April 14, 2007 Parity will not harm - no where to connect parity related lines on ST. In fact, you may use 4MB simm modules, but machine will use only 1MB of their capacity. Min 2 module of 30 pin may work - then will have 2MB. With 4 modules 4MB. Of course in case of 1MB or bigger modules. With 256K ones you will have only half MB, or 1MB.
