Have the hardware issues with the 360 been fixed?...

Recommended Posts

The only problem that I've ever heard about is overheating in the power brick, but, AFIK, that's been fixed. Is there anything else? I might like to get one of these, eventually, but I'd rather not gamble with $400.

I would hold out for at least a die shrink of the CPU. I don't think that's happened yet. Somewhere I got the idea that the upcoming Elite version marks the start of the die-shrink units.

Personally, I'm holding out for price drops. I didn't get an Xbox until the 360 came out, and I knew I didn't want one until then*, but this time around I'll probably have a 360 before a PS3.

*partly because of anti-MS feelings, and partly because most of the games are FPS combat shooters, sports, and racing, none of which have much interest for me. I'm much more interested in a chipped original Xbox as an upgrade from the Dreamcast.

If you get a 360, I'd be sure and snag an extended warranty. They are only like $30 a year and worth it for any product that you feel is going to be a major expense and you want peace of mind owning....not just a game console.

That said, I haven't personally had any issues with the 360 MS sent me (After sending the original unit I bought back to them a couple weeks after I got it because it would freeze up when playing PDZ)

BTW in spite of what many non 360 owners will tell you is a fact....When you count the number of games available for the 360...the First Person Shooters arent hardly worth mentioning, there are only a handfull (A very small handfull...maybe 9 total including the original Doom on Live) LOL I dunno why that FPS myth keeps circulating!! :)

I've had several V1 consoles (maybe 60 - 80) and only my pre-launch consoles has needed repair.

I have 11 360s and no failures so far, but my Kiosk unit began to freeze randomly (it turned out the fan in the kiosk was blocked by a cable, which may have been causing overheating)

My launch XBOX 360 has been fine, though I don't play nearly as much as Moycon. Your mileage may vary.

As for Bruce's opinion that the old XBOX: "most of the games are FPS combat shooters, sports, and racing," that's really the state of video games in general since the Dreamcast, not the XBOX in particular. The Cube and PS2 were the same way -- the best bet for something different was the portables.

I mostly like the fringe genres myself, but the old black XBOX was still my platform of choice for the last generation.

Well, I MISS my PSTwo. I'll definately get another when I get the money; it is my favorite next-gen (or last-gen) console, due to the sheer variety and numbers of games playable on it. You can play anything from The Raiden Project, from the mid-1990's, up to the latest releases. I liken it to the NES, in that there's literally something for everyone.

Of course, the XBOX certainly has it's merits; playing OutRun 2 at an arcade sold me on the system!
