Anyone else have a 7800 like this?

Recommended Posts

So I decided to take apart my 7800 today for a cleaning, and as I took it apart I noticed that the RF shield had some fringes on the left side of it. I looked, and lo and behold I found a hole and solder pads for the expansion port. I assumed my 7800 was a 1987 model that didn't have accommodations for the expansion port, but now I think mine is a 1986 model.

This seems to be the first model.I own this too.

Well, it can't be the first model because there are some 7800s that were made in 1984 and have the expansion port. I've also noticed that the 1984 7800s also have a slightly different faceplate rainbow (most 7800s have it going from yellow to green, and the early ones have it going from red to purple)

All NTSC 7800s have the solder pads for the expansion port if not the full port itself.

Oh, I thought maybe Atari omitted the solder pads later on for cost reduction. So do all NTSC systems have the RF shield hole for the expansion port then?

I'd have to double check but I'm pretty sure they all have the hole in the RF shield.

I'm pretty sure most 7800 have the RF shield hole and the solder pads for the expansion port. The only really noticable change (besides motherboard changes, which aren't noticable until you open it) in the pre-Atari Corp. 7800's (those made by Atari Inc.), I think, is the outer case. The early models with or without the actual port, still have the cut-out in the case like shown below. The motherboard below is an earlier version (Atari Inc.), though I no longer own an Atari Corp. model, so I can't show the difference. maybe someone else can post a pic from later MOBO's to compare. I just happened to have this all open becuase I'm about to do a S-video mod to it.

Mine is one of the earlier models, I'm not sure if it's from '84 or not, but it's face plate has the yellow to green rainbow.

Well, I just checked the MOBO, and it's a Rev. A with 1984 stamped on it.
