You'll need something with a FM - like 1040STFM, 520STFM - not sure the STE's have this by default.

a 1040STE has a newer TOS version, helped my Bard's Tale game play much better plus mine at least had a TV output as well (North American version).

I was just curious as there's one of each on eBay atm, but the STE is suffering from a nasty case of yellowing. I wondered whether it was still worth taking over the STFM which is in better condition.

The STE is nice and can be upgraded to 4MB very easily, just install four 1MB 30-pin SIMMs. I have a 4160STE and it runs a lot of the games fine. I can also TOS back to 1.0 with a TOS boot disk for older games.

I'll have a go at the STFM and the 4160 in that case - they're in nicer condition than the 1040STE. Cheers.

well, don't quote me on that, but if it was STF*m* it would have the *m*odulator, so you could hook it up to any RF input of a TV or a VCR.

However, I think that you can take an RGB signal out of the monitor connector of the STF and hook it to a SCART input of any TV.

STF has not modulator, so it is not possible to connect it via RF. But it also lack composite output. So the RGB is only way how to connect it to TV. You need a TV with SCART to do that.

Quick question re. STE joysticks. If I do pick up a 1040 STE, can I use a standard joystick on it(I know they have enhanced ports, but I'm unsure whether or not they take a normal joystick too), or am I better off getting a couple of Jag pads to use on it? If the latter is the case, I take it they function ok with any games, yeah?

Cheers.

The STE and Falcon both have the normal 9 pin D digital mouse/joystick ports under the front right side of the case as per the ST so if your joystick works on an ST it will work with those.

The enhcanced joystick ports on the right side are wired identically to the Jaguar including the analogue inputs, however they need to be read the same way as on a Jaguar and so the game has to support them and to my Knoweledge most games and certainly those written for the ST do not.
