A top ten worst console list that doesn't suck!(finally)

Recommended Posts

It is a great game once you understand how to play. A lot of people think it's straight up Space Invaders with less ships in silly shapes.

I had the game back in the day--first cart I bought for the O2, and found it a big disappointment. With careful play it wasn't hard to get a 10-0 score, and once that was accomplished there wasn't much point to the game anymore.

I appreciate that the creator (Ed Averett? Or someone else?) was trying to design a play mechanic that could work well with the O2's limitations, but the unchanging difficulty and feeble scoring severely limited replay potential.

The next cart I got was UFO! :D That's an awesome game.

Then I got the tank/air-sea game. The guided shot variations were sorta fun, but my brother seldom felt like playing and the cart is useless single-player.

Then K.C. Munchkin. :D My reaction to Atari's Pac-Man lawsuit was that Atari was just mad because their Pac-Man was so feeble.

Then Quest for the Rings. :| People here speak highly of the game, but if the Ringmaster tasks are performed by one of the two action players then the board game part is stupid, and if they're performed by someone else, then the Ringmaster will spend much of his time doing nothing while the other people play.

take game.com off and put n64 in
The Sega Saturn would have to go on first.

I believe that we've already agreed that before either of those could go on there a whole shit load of stuff would need to be added first. This is a top ten list designed with the input of adults who experienced most of the systems in their prime, and who have thought out what makes a system bad. For lists that include the Saturn of N64 I would direct you guys to gamezone or progames, or gamespawn or whatever the hot website created by retards is named at the moment.

In case you can't tell, I don't think either N64 or Saturn belongs on this list, BUT if someone is insane enough to think the N64 belongs, the Saturn must precede it.

Ah, well that makes sense. I don't particularly agree (great 2D > ugly 3D), but a case could be made there at least.

OK, does anyone have anything to say about the Creativision?

From what I can determine online, it was a 1981 system. The games look roughly Intellivision levels of graphics. It has Space Invaders, Pac-Man, and Armor Battle clones among it's games. Pac-Man alone is a pretty hard kind of game to screw up in such a way to make unplayable.

I'm having a hard time imagining the Memorex VIS is better than the Creativision. Sherlock Holmes versus even a crappy Space Invaders clone? I don't have to go through much effort to realize I'd rather play the crappy Space Invaders clone. Of course, I don't know how crappy of clones the Creativision games are.

I do have something to say about the CreatiVision! :)

It's hardware is *not* similar to the one on Intellivision. It's actually almost identical to the ColecoVision except the CPU, that's a 6502 running at (wow!) 2 MHz, while the ColecoVision used a Z80.

CreatiVision was engineered in 1981 and used the absolutely best available hardware at those times: 32 on-screen sprites, 256x192 resolution at 16 colours, 2 MHz clock, 4-channel audio hardware, full embedded keyboard (cheap-style actually but could be expanted to a full-moving keys version), 2 joysticks with 16 directions + 2 side buttons, etc.

It was actually a hybrid computer/console: the keyboard could be used with the BASIC cartridge, which is told as being done by Microsoft. Additional tape recorder/player (1 channel for data and 1 channel for audio - used to listen to instructions while loading game), I/O expansion, printer, 16K memory module, etc.

Games could be up to 32KBytes each and are not "crap" at all. Yes most of them are rip-offs, but some are quite addictive and offer interesting variations. For example the Pacman clone can be played by 2 players simultaneously! :)

You can find all infos, ROMs, manuals, my version of the FunnyMu emulator + interface, tons of scans, manuals, boxes, and a full cv-story on my site.

I'm currently designing the sole and only creatiVision multicart, hosting all existing ROMs in a single 1MBytes chip, carton box, manuals, overlays, etc. Will be ready (hopefully!) by end of June. :)

I'm not sure I'd put the Halcyon on there, the console is almost vaporware. It's almost impossible to judge it by the two games it had.

The VideoBrain (as much as I hate to admit it) is pretty crud-o-licious, how about adding that?

you should start searching a cV asap then, and I hardly believe you'll actually get one copy before June - it's quite rare finding nowadays!

Hmmm, I don't know a whole lot about the creativision. Maybe I'll just pick up a cheaper clone system.

clones:

Dick Smith Wizzard (only available in Australia... get ready to pay an enormous sum of money for POSTAGE!)

Hanimex Rameses (good luck finding one, I personally never seen it on auction)

VTech Funvision (much more good luck, I don't even ever seen a PICTURE of it!!!)

I suggest the Dick Smith Wizzard... good luck on that too ;) ...creatiVision is a damned console for collectors, believe me! :)

Noticed nobody's posted here in a while. Guess it's too late to pin this, since I can't edit the original post anymore.(Curse you time sensitive posts! ) Maybe I'll make a new list based on my old one, with descriptions, and gameplay footage, and possibly built in emulators, and maybe even an interactive 3D virtual museum! With sound clips of actual events of people screaming in terror while they play these godforsaken units! and...oh, who am I kidding. I could never do all that. Besides, the forum wouldn't easily permit it.

Not sure what's with all the N64 hate. I've always thought it was a decent machine with some really good games (and some pretty bad ones too!).

Well in this particular thread, it's the second time Thomaswhatever made esentially the same post about the N64. I don't know that there's a lot of hate for it outside that. I hate it, but not nearly enough to want it on this list.

take CDi out (as it's firstly a movie player) and put N64 in
Just to clarify: The Nintendo 64 is NEVER making it on this list. Here are some N64 games I would recommend playing: Wetrix, Tetrisphere, Super Smash Bros. Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, Banjo Kazooie/Tooie, Rocket Robot on Wheels, Space Station Silicon Valley. Oh, and have you ever even PLAYED any of the systems on this list? Spend a minute or so with any of them (especially the RCA Studio II) and you'll think N64, or even Sega Saturn(US) for that matter, are the greatest systems of all time. Edited by Segataritensoftii

Played all N64 games you mentioned (and many more since I do own a N64 Pokemon Pikachu console), Banjo is an excellent game (read the geat feature about Banjo-Kazooie in Retro Gamer issue 36), Wetrix is one of Oceans best, Rocket Robot on Wheels good game from Ubi Soft...and I love my N64, but the true reality is: one of the worst systems. As a different matter, I do not own a Saturn, naturally I cannot comment on this console (like many others here do without even owning that particular piece of hardware). Never owned a RCA Studio 2 either, so I cannot comment, guess I could take comments out of the DP guide, but I won't. I'd say though, 70's Pong style consoles shouldn't be included in the list either, as those were the beginnings of home-gaming (But maybe the RCA Studio 2 was the worst 'Pong' style console of it's era)

Ok, talking of games, Have you ever played the CDi? (although not a gaming console as such). Lots of folks here on AA dismiss the CDi without ever even touched the machine (Quote: Oh yeah, Zelda games on CDi, they're rubbish...never played them, never even owned a CDi...Doh). Excellent titles:

The Apprentice, Flintstones/Jetsons, Zelda's Adventure, Steel Machine, Voyeur, Tetris, Mad Dog McCree, Pac-Panic, Kether, Tetsuo Gaiden, Scotland Yard, Lost Eden, Burn Cycle, Earth Command and many more... (plus oodles of edutainment titles for kids which actually work). I suggest you spend some time with the CDi and then come back.

Once again, I have no idea what you're talking about. I guess some people's tastes just can't be understood.

While I agree with most of the games on that list, I personally find the CD-i's library to be quite drab and painful to play. However, I do think that it DOES have some of the best FMV titles of it's generation. (Awesome Dragon's Lair conversion, Burn: Cycle, Kether)

That's ok, if you would be as long a gamer as I have been, you'd understand. Actually. I have almost a complete Jaguar library, but for me it's one of the worst systems, and should be on the list. But there you go, personal taste, that is why 'best' and 'worst' lists never work.

Here we are. The creatiVision MULTICART is ready to go into the "production phase"! :lust:

We're accepting pre-orders (this helps us know how many people are interested in getting one). :)
