sega cd model 2 scratching discs?

Recommended Posts

i have an issue with my model 2 sega cd system grinding discs to the point of not playing anymore. Aside from getting a front loader, is there anything i can do to stop the scratching or is it in the motor? I have tried tape on the sharp corners on the inside of the unit which are suspect, but the disc doesn't read with the tape on those areas and the cd still rubs. Anyone have any experiences that were fixable?

Well, if it's the top of the disc (lable side) try leaving the door open, and putting a clip or something in the "cd door open" switch.

If it's the bottome side of the disc, the read side, then, there's probably 2 possibilitys, 1, the spindle has slipped down. You can pry it back up, but be careful. If it's to loose to stay up, you can glue it in place, just be careful with the glue jso you don't get it in the spindle motor. and 2, the reader head may be out of whack, sitting crooked in the track. Useually, if this happens, it will stop working immidiately, but if it doesn't, it's possible it's touching the CD as it spins and reading it anyways, slowly scratching the face all to hell.

Not sure about that, you'd just have to get a closer look.

The rest of the inside is pretty much one molded piece of plastic, and shouldn't have anything stick out and scratch the disc.

[edit]BTW, if I remember right, the Sega CD has no lockout, so if it's not a really bad problem, you can take your games and burn copys to play, or havve a friend do it if you don't have a burner.

thanks for the info, it's scratching the discs in two circular lines on the read side. which led me to believe it was the plastic inside. The plastic is solid but has grooves where a warning label is that to the touch are sharp. When i taped the plastic, the scratches were less defined, but the discs would not read. So i was thinking the spindle may be off causing the disc to slip too low and grab those plastic edges. my only solutions are to sand down the inside or try to pry up the spindle, or obviously get a new sega cd system.
