sukotsu9 #1 Posted May 4, 2007 Interesting article from IGN today about the beginnings of the Odyssey the "very first video game console". I never played an Odyssey, but I remember the advertisements for it. I always felt it was an Intellivision-type machine (fewer games, argueably better graphics). But on the heels of "2001: A Space Odyessy", they sure picked the right name!
BassGuitari #2 Posted May 4, 2007 Impressive! I was expecting a lot of trash talk about how primitive and worthless it is compared to today's consoles.

This birthday is for the Odyssey from 1972, basically what you call a 'Pong' console. See here my complete Odyssey collection: http://videogamecollectors.com/gallery/album128 Anyway, congrats Odyssey.

Looking at the colours on the overlays and the game selection and packaging, I can't help but think that what might have hurt the O2 in sales was that it feels like the next step from this Odyssey stuff. I love my O2, but it just feels a lot more like the next "Pong" than it feels like an Atari. By the way, anyone ever read Baer's bok? I haven't, but from comments I've read from him online and soem interviews I've seen, I'm pretty sure that guy is officially a genius. Yeah,i agree that"ODYSSEY"is the coolest name for a console, too bad it didnt live up to its name, but i guess thats a matter of opinion or taste, not really my favorite console though,it did have some pretty good games, but not many, thats the problem, but every system has dud games.Plus, any system that uses overlays on the SCREEN,...that's it for me,game OVER,cant stand those types of games,i mean if a system cant deliver the game on the screen, that says something right there, and im not talking about just the ODYSSEY,as several other systems have used that sytem before. Honestly, I didn't know Baer before I read the Odyessy article (RSS does work). But he's certainly a tech-visionary.
+Lynxer2007 #8 Posted May 8, 2007 I'm glad IGN did a article on the first ever game system. I actually have an Odyssey at home. Box, overlay, cards, everything. I only played it a few times, though. I chose to go back to my 360 & 2600(darth vader).
