Bug Tracking Software for Homebrew Projects

Recommended Posts

Invision (the company that makes this forum software) today released, for free, the bug tracking software they developed for their own site. This software allows multiple projects to be setup, for which bugs and suggestions can then be entered and tracked on a per-project basis. The projects have an "owner" and also support moderators. Each bug can have different states ("Unfiled", "Investigating", "Fixed", "Won't Fix", "As Designed", and so forth"), as well a discussion (very similar to a forum thread) talking about that particular issue.

I think it would be great to integrate the "Tracker" into this forum for use by homebrew authors. I think projects can be private or public, and it would be a great way to keep track of bugs and suggestions in a more organized fashion. This could be used for 2600, 5200, 7800, 8-bit, ColecoVision, and other projects. Could also be used for AtariAge overall (bugs and suggestions) and to track forum-related bugs and suggestions.

What does everyone think?

I have attached some screenshots..

I don't know about homebrew projects, but I've always wanted some simple web based bug tracking software for projects around the house. Yes really. :)

Considering my last projects where towards the end I was communicating with ~10 beta testers at once via PMs, this would be absolutely brilliant. Instead of spending a lot of time keeping everyone involved updated, us developers could focus on the things that really matter :)

ha. thats luck...yesterday i was searching the net for bug tracking software and spoke with prof coders... as my rpg has now 16k source it gets more complicated than a 1k entry... ;)

i would really appreciate to having one which could be simple to use as i am not a web wizzard to config bugzilla & co.

Yeah, Bugzilla is massive overkill for something like this, I think. The nice thing about the IPB Tracker software is that it's already integrated into the forum and will be relatively easy for everyone to use. It's a little light on features right now, but I expect it will be improved upon quickly because the community will be working on it as opposed to Invision.

I'm going to try installing it this weekend while I'm fixing other forum issues since the upgrade last weekend.

I haven't forgotten about this, just watching the progress of the module.. I am going to wait until they release 1.0.1, which fixes some bugs and adds some features. I expect that will be released pretty soon, and once it is I'll install it here..

I posted a message asking the developers if version 1.0.1 is coming "soon" or not. Generally it's considered taboo to ask for released dates on the Invision forums, but since this is a community-driven project, perhaps I'll get a straight answer from someone. :) If it looks like it might be a while before they release a new version, I won't hold off on installing it..

One of the developers said it would be released "soon", so I'll hold off until the new version is released. When pressed by another user for a more specific timeframe, said developer would not give any additional information. :)

I really like this idea, Albert. Ha! 8-bit Homebrew programmers are now official!!!

Also, here's a big YAH to Colony 7 resuming work!

Version 1.0.1 of IB.Tracker was posted a few hours ago, so I'm going to try installing it in the forum this weekend. :)

Okay, I have installed the Bug Tracker, which you may find here:

http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?autocom=tracker

I have put a link to the Bug Tracker at the top of the Homebrew, Programming and Atari 2600 BASIC forums. I'm not sure if I will add a global link at the top of the page yet. There is a link to it in the list of forums on the main page, in the "Game Programming" group. It is a redirect to the Bug Tracker page. Right now I have only added a project for Manuel's "Colony 7". If anyone else wants a project, please let me know and I'll set it up right away.
