Is there a 2600 game that NO ONE will claim to like?

Recommended Posts

I think I will go with Cruise Missile from Froggo, I just don't like it at all.

:ponder:

Anything by Froggo sucks, the boxes even look shitty. I feel like they contaminate the rest of my collection with there suckness :)

Mr. Robinett's "Basic Programming" comes to mind. Don't get me wrong, great concept but why would you expect anyone to devote any time whatsoever to writing a program, in Basic, without a keyboard, that you had no means of saving. Oh, I get it-- the limited RAM would ensure that your programs would be short enough to memorize....

It was an educational tool more than anything, plus you have to recall....this was released in an age where Windows didn't exist and high end IBM PCs were running an Intel 8088 processor with very large 5 1/4" floppy drives.

Aww, c'mon, I'll stand up for that one (even though Mr. Robinett seemed surprised by my fan-email about it). Putting a CodeView-style development environment on a tiny little micro years before CodeView was invented for the PC is quite an accomplishment. Had the SARA chip been invented before Warren did his Basic Programming cart, it would have been quite something, IMHO. With 64 bytes it's very close to being usable; another 128 would help enormously.

Sssnake and Bugs are my two least favorites. I don't know how anyone could even PLAY, much less like, either of them. Haven't played Karate yet.

I will admit to liking Star Ship and Airlock though. Neither are great, but they are not horrible either. Star Ship is actually rather decent. I think it just gets dogged on because its a Mythicon game, by which I mean it's related to Firefly. Sorrceror is bad too, but not unplayable. Firefly is pretty awful.

I'm also one of those weird types that stands up for E.T. In fact, I like the game enough to actually play it pretty regularly when I'm in the mood for the 2600.

I'll chime in and proclaim that I like a few of the stinkers on here - Pac Kong, Sssnake, Street Racer (almost entirely for Number Cruncher) and even Karate. Yes, I like Karate in a dumbed-down Karate Champ kind of way.

Don't get me wrong, Mr. Robinett is my hero (after all, he gave the world "Adventure") and I absolutely appreciate the ingenuity and skill required to actually make a functioning program like this. I'm just saying that despite the heroic effort, as a practical matter, it's a tedious and useless program with little similarity to the BASIC languages used on personal computers at the time.

And to think, all this time I've been dissing David Crane's grandma! Sorry David, sorry David's grandma, but I still cannot enjoy Slot Machine.

Star Ship is by Atari, one of the original nine games for the VCS.

I happen to like Star Ship. I like the 'blip' sounds that the game generates. And LUner Lander, which is on the same cart, is playable also.

The Mythicon game that you're referring to is Star Fox.

How about Custer's Revenge? Anyone brave enough to claim they like a game where the goal is to rape a woman?

I like the game. Although, when you put it like that, it doesn't sound so great, but on the screen it's so comical looking. I especially like when Custer gets caught by an arrow or a cactus and jumps out of his boots. Hilarious! I actually have more of a problem with Mystique's other game, Beat 'Em and Eat 'Em. That's just gross...but still a little funny. :P

I thought it was consensual bondage-play.

So I'll start with Karate.

ROFL! When I read this thread's title Karate was the first game that popped into my head. Horrendous! Is it even playable? I have more fun playing a 20% finished prototype.

As far as Sssnake goes, I'll quote a bit of a reply from a discussion on the DP boards:

No. I just refuse to believe that you like Sssnake. I mean, hyperbole is great and everything, but... Sssnake? No way.

"Trust me on this. Joe might have played more games of Maze Craze than most people, but I've played more games of Data Age's Sssnake and U.S.Games' Picnic than probably any 3 people. No hyperbole here."

Steeplechase sucks to play.

The one game I have no desire to play: Football

Every Superbowl party at my house starts with a few games of Atari Football. So I'll vouch for that one. And 4 player Steeplechase is sorta fun.

Springer, my children, Springer.

Attempt to play this piece of crap and wonder at its suckitude.

And Out of Control; is alright... if you read the instructions.

I think "historical value" is a cop-out. That shouldn't count.

Or "hey, it's collectable".

Or even "I think it has a pretty label".

I think playability is key here.

If that's the case, Slot Machine and Basic Math are indeed the stinkers.

And, I'm not talking replay value. I never want to plug those in ever.

And, what about BiBi! Terrible. I played it on an emulator for 5 seconds.

For Airlock, it's short, but it can be played for amusement for 1 minute. Same could be said with Sorcerer.

But, for these, I think the experience should be frustration from power-on to power-off.

PAC KONG SUCKS!!!!!!

I can't play this game one second without screaming this game sucks.Multiple reasons:

(1)When you hear the name Pac-Kong,you think Pac-Man and Donkey Kong. Its more like Donkey Kong on some bad crack.

(2)This game seems glitched. You must avoid these flashy things that flash and go over the screen giving you barely any space if any to work your way up the ladders.

(3)The second floor before the top floors jump is nearly impossible to make.

I would prefer to play the McDonalds prototype than this piece of sh!t!
