mimo #1 Posted May 10, 2007 Got my Jag and Jag CD today. What am I supposed to do to get the CD working? It makes noises, but the Disc does not spin. Is it a dead cat? Is it repairable? Thanks
Broonale #2 Posted May 10, 2007 What noise does it make?
ls650 #3 Posted May 10, 2007 First, is the Jag console itself working okay? Have you tried using a cartridge without the JagCD connected? Second, (assuming the main console is okay) check that the Jag CD is snugly connected to the main Jaguar. It takes a bit of force to kind of 'snap' it down into place. I had that problem when I first tried using mine. Third, check the power supply connections. Are they properly plugged into the two units? Fourth, if you don't have a JagCD to play you can always use an audio CD to test the Video Light Machine built-in to the Jaguar. Fifth, are you seeing the Jaguar logo with flying colors when you power on the unit?

Yes yes yes yes yes! the lazer head moves (searches), but the disc will not spin

Broonale #6 Posted May 10, 2007 Can you spin the hub with your finger easily? When you open or close the lid while on, does the screen flash blank and come back to the question mark? Does the question mark blink or stay on without blinking?
Nognir #7 Posted May 10, 2007 I have such a problem myself with my JagCD and I always get a CD with question mark in it.
mimo #8 Posted May 10, 2007 I can spin the hub fairly easily, feels like trying to spin any CD The screen blanks and then comes back on with the '?' The '?' blinks
ls650 #9 Posted May 10, 2007 The '?' means the disc is unreadable. Does it also do this with an audio CD? Any audio CD should trigger the VLM.
mimo #10 Posted May 10, 2007 No, it will not work with an audio CD. The drive does not spin up, but the Lazer head can be heard tracking
Broonale #11 Posted May 10, 2007 By tracking, you don't mean clicking, do you? You are going to have to repair or replace the CD transport. The good news is it sounds like your mainboard is OK. Hopefully, a wire has come lose on the drive motor. This is quite common and easily repairable. If the noise is clicking, the a wire on the zero stop switch has broken off and is also repairable. If not either of those, then you need a new CD transport.
Broonale #12 Posted May 10, 2007 Once I repair the wires on a CD transport, I like to reinforce them with a little dab of silicone. This helps to keep them in place and prevents damage when I ship them. Make sure it is all working before putting on any silicone because it is no fun to remove. Make sure you don't use too much silicone or place it where it will interfere with the mechanism.
mimo #13 Posted May 10, 2007 thanks everyone for all your input. I will check the connections, If they are not at fault, then the seller has agreed to take back the drive and refund me.
mimo #14 Posted May 10, 2007 its not the connections next question, do I send the lot back or just keep the Jag? I love Tempest 2000, and that alone maybe worth keeping the jag, but is there any way I can (cheeply) play homebrews without a CD?
Zerosquare #15 Posted May 10, 2007 is there any way I can (cheeply) play homebrews without a CD?Yes, either by installing a BJL ROM inside your Jag, or by getting Protector : Special Edition (which includes a BJL loader).
mimo #16 Posted May 10, 2007 Thanks, but protector se-not very cheap, and nor is JBL mod, as I can't do it myself. Thanks anyway Mike
sciarpo #17 Posted May 10, 2007 There might be nothing wrong with the CD player. I had a similar problem when I got mine. I called the seller and he told me that the circular grey spindle in the middle might be pressed down too far. I used a swiss army knife and carefully popped the spindle up, and my CD player worked fine afterwards.
Broonale #18 Posted May 10, 2007 Fix it or send it back. You can get a console and T2K cheap enough until you decide to buy a good CD add-on. Don't accept broken merchandise. I am still confidant it can be fixed. Has the seller offered to repair it?
mimo #19 Posted May 10, 2007 He has offered to take it back, either with or without the Jag. He says that he may be able to get it fixed, but I guess he will just put it back on evil bay.
sciarpo #20 Posted May 10, 2007 did you try to pop the spindle?
mimo #21 Posted May 10, 2007 did you try to pop the spindle? had a go, how far do I need to pop it?
sciarpo #22 Posted May 10, 2007 I popped it slightly, and my CD started working. I had the same problem you are describing.

I want to take a look if mine needs also a repair
sciarpo #25 Posted May 11, 2007 I'm old fashioned and don't have a digital camera. When you pop open the lid to the CD player it's the large grey circle in the center. Some people push the CD's in too hard and it will push the spindle down and cause the CD player to not be able to read the CD. So I popped mine back up with a knife and the CD player worked fine.
