Epicenter #1 Posted May 15, 2007 I picked up a PC Engine Duo (which will read all HuCards and CDROM/CDROM2/SuperCDROM discs) at a local junk shop for 5000 yen (equivalent of ~$41 USD, woot) and now I'm looking for good software for it. What are the must-have games and anything else worth playing? I'm mostly interested in good shooters and platformers though I also enjoy puzzle games. I'm not interested however in any RPG or strategy titles. Thanks!

NightSprinter #4 Posted May 16, 2007 outrun, splatterhouse, SFII, Dracula X i think it's called. Yeah, it's "Akumajou Dracula X: Chi no Rondo". Otherwise known as "CastleVania: Rondo of Blood"

JB #6 Posted May 17, 2007 outrun, splatterhouse, SFII, Dracula X i think it's called. Yeah, it's "Akumajou Dracula X: Chi no Rondo". Otherwise known as "CastleVania: Rondo of Blood" Yah. The commonly-used "US" name is Castlevania: Dracula X, though. I think that originates from old game mag previews. Basically, Dracula X was the only part of the name anyone could read, so they figured "Akumajou must mean Castlevania!" and a persistent annoyance was born. And as of the SNES remake, it's become a semi-official title. I think Konami used that title due to the recognition it had. (In Europe it was Castlevania: Vampire's Kiss, and in Japan it was AkuWTF Dracula XX).

ThunderFist #8 Posted May 17, 2007 Splatterhouse if it's the Japanese version, if not, forget about it, especially since the US version is up for download for the Wii. Anyhow, I personally want to get my hands on a PC Engine, and when I do, the games I'm going to jump on will be the Ys series. Only the third and sixth games got much of a release in the US, and one of those games, the third, while I like it, is considered to be quite inferior to the others. Plus, the SNES and Genesis can't do the animation sequences that the PC Engine version is supposed to have, so that's another reason I want their versions. There's no Ys 5 for it, though - that's SFC only, though I'd love to get my hands on it. And while we're on that topic, where the frig are our versions of the PS2 remakes?! Yeah, I know we're almost sure not to get them, but that's just because neither Konami (they released Ark Of Napishtim in the US) nor any other company is cool enough to bring them here. They have to know there's enough of a fan base that they'd make money with them.
+Psionic #9 Posted October 4, 2007 (edited) Splatterhouse if it's the Japanese version, if not, forget about it, especially since the US version is up for download for the Wii. Is there anything different about the Japanese version? I know about Out Run, Shinobi, and SFII, but what other games are must-haves for the PC Engine (specifically among the Japanese exclusive titles)? I'm looking for Hu-Card games only, not CDs. Also, was a black controller multi-tap that matches the black CoreGrafx systems ever released? I've only ever seen the original white one. bust3dstr8 #11 Posted October 5, 2007 You can spend a small fortune on PCE shooters and still barely dent the total amount on the system. These are what I think are the top tier shooters...that I've played. Nexzr (My favorite on the system, just awesome) Star Parodier PC Denjin Winds of Thunder Gates of Thunder Terra Cresta II Soldier Blade Super Star Soldier Macross 2036 Magical Chase Spriggan Raiden CD Parodius Mid Tier: Galaga 88 Salamander Ai cho aniki Cotton Kaiden 00 Kyukyoku Tiger Image Fight Super Darius II Gradius II Gofer Gunhed Final Soldier Coryoon Violent Soldier R Type Complete Paranoia (a little alien flips you off and says F#$% %&@ after rounds) Twin Bee Some Platformers Jackie Chan Ninja Spirit Ninja Ryukenden (Ninja Gaiden remake) Legendary Axe 1 @ 2 Jigoku Meguri Luiquid Kids Mizbak Shubibinman 1&2&3 Bonks (of course) Super Adventure Island Dynastic Hero Dracula X Wonderboy III SHadow of the beast (not the best game but the music is fantastic, dirt cheap game too) Prince of Persia Kato and Ken Only good puzzle games I know of are the Bombermans and Columns Some other games that are worth looking into. Nekketsu Dodgeball (remake of the NES game) Pomping World Bloody Wolf Double Dragon II Cadash

+Psionic #13 Posted October 5, 2007 (edited) The US Splatterhouse had the religious stuff removed and has a white mask Ah, I see. Thanks, I'll have to check it out. Black CoreGrafx where you see that? Just know of black Duos. The later PC Engines (both the CoreGrafx and CoreGrafx II) were black/dark grey just like the Duo and TurboGrafx...only the original RF-only PC Engine was white. Thus far, I've only seen the white multitaps. Edited October 5, 2007 by PingvinBlueJeans

A Sprite #15 Posted October 5, 2007 Seconding Ninja Spirit, for both of you. Think Contra meets Shinobi - old school arcade action in it's purest form.
+Psionic #16 Posted October 21, 2007 Think Contra meets Shinobi - old school arcade action in it's purest form. Speaking of Shinobi, I was a bit disappointed with that one. The graphics and sound are head and shoulders above the Master System version, but the missing stages and altered play mechanics (lack of close attacks) lower its quality significantly. It could have been so much better on a bigger HuCard.
