Playing Module Man under MESS

I'm trying to get Module Man (TRS-80 game) running under MESS, but it doesn't seem to work.

The ROM image I'm using is a ".PAK" file, which was primarily designed to work under Jeff Vavasour's TRS-80 emulator, but it's an old emulator that doesn't support USB joysticks, and doesn't offer a keyboard-based alternative to joystick input.

 

I tried the same ROM under MESS, but I can only get as far as the title screen, as pictured below. Has anyone been able to make Module Man work under MESS, or am I out of luck?

EDIT: I tried running the emulator under DosBox, and it does indeed map my USB joystick to the old game port, so the emulator detects my joystick now, but as soon as "Module Man" starts (or more precisely, as soon as I pass the "PREPARE TO BEGIN" screen) the emulation goes crazy and crashes. I was so close.......
