Atari 600XL question before I purchase

Recommended Posts

I've found a good deal on a 600xl and disc drive that I'd like to purchase so my daughter can learn programming. But before I lay out the cash, is it possible to use a new-style flat panel monitor or small flat panel tv with this computer? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, though you may need a monitor cable to connect the computer to the Video-In or S-Video jack on your flat panel.

If it does not come with the appropriate cable you can get one at 8bitclassics for a few bucks.

US made 600XL does not have monitor port, only RF. And the 600XL would need to be upgraded from 16K to 64K in order to use the disk drive, assuming its not already upgraded.

OOPS! Turns out it's an 800xl--- not a 600. Does the same still apply as to the monitor port?

The 800XL has a jack for video and audio out and will work with the video in on a modern TV or monitor with video in, but the jack is proprietary so you have to get a customr cable that is commonly available online or from ebay for $7-$14

*edit*

The link above seems to have them for $5

Righto. Stock 800XL only has composite out. Keep that in mind for your tv/monitor.

Great. Thanks much.
